I first found out about Big Troubles after my band had played a show with some of the members who at the time were backing their friend’s band Fluffy Lumbers. Their debut LP Worry on Olde English Spelling Bee was recorded by the bands joint songwriter’s Alex Craig & Ian Drennan from Ridgewood, New Jersey. It’s pretty Lo-fi but you can clearly hear every riff and effect and the levels on the vocals aren’t annoyingly beating on your eardrums. Worry drips with the essence of MBV’s Loveless. It also has that Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 vibe on some of the songs. Something pretty cool that [...]
I finally finally GET Lo-Fi. As opposed to before when I could only look at it from afar and point at all the fuzzy fuzz fuzzness of it all. I finally GET what kind of mood you absolutely MUST be in to sink, sink down/down into the best of it. You’re best placed in a [...]

We meet Fluffy Lumbers/Big Troubles member Samuel Franklin during our "epic" trip 2 America back in October and were pretty bowled over by his encyclopedic knowledge of both amazing/lost 90s pop gems and more esoteric visions alike. His is our last guest 2010 list for 2010 and also includes a little "stocking stuffer" of fifty-one YouTube videos (both old and new) for yr random persual. Merry Christmas! "2010 had an embarrassment of riches in the reissue department. [...]

MP3: Fluffy Lumbers - Rose Quartz Mix (123mb) Really excited to present this mix from one of our favourite dudes, Samuel Franklin aka Fluffy Lumbers! I think it's fair to say that all three of us RQers present at CMJ were super blown away by the seemingly encyclopedic knowledge Sam and his bandmates have of lost, forgotten or would-be pop hits (c. 1980s, early 90s), particularly that type of anonymous elevator/telephone hold-music that you only really get to hear for the briefest moment. We had the best time dancing to Sam [...]

The one man jam band is one man no more. Backed by familiar faces that included Ian and Alex from Big Troubles , Sam from Fluffy Lumbers , and Luka from No Demons Here, Ducktails ' Matt Mondanile tested out richer, more muscular versions of his lo-fi psych pop last week at Monster Island Basement in Brooklyn. We were there to film the entire set, one clip of which you can check out above. It's "Landrunner", from Mondanile's Landscapes LP, out last year on Olde English Spelling Be e. Help yourself to [...]

Fluffy Lumbers - Cruisers Things you need to know. Infectious lo-fi pop (this is actual lo-fi). Seeing him live tonight at the Brooklyn Based ’s Northside Festival showcase, curated by Microphone Memory Emotion . ($1 Heinekens?) Fluffy Lumbers is Ridgewood, New Jersey’s Samuel Franklin. This track and it’s sequel “Cruisers Pt. 2 (Police Cruisers)” did appear on a 7” on Weird Hug Records .

I couldn't choose one show to recommend for Friday. You couldn't possibly only go to one show tomorrow night. Northside has packed Williamsburg with an absurd amount of good bands this Friday, and I'm going to give you a run down of all the ones I think are worth dropping by. First and foremost, Famous Class records are hosting their own show at Death By Audio, with the abovementioned bands. Grooms, Darlings, and Sisters are three of my absolute favorites all in one place, so this show gets my first nod. Happening a little further out, at Bar [...]
Brooklyn Based has teamed up for with Microphone Memory Emotion to throw a showcase at Matchless for Northside Fest this year. Two of the bands playing hail from Ridgewood, NJ but seem to be just as at home in Brooklyn. Fluffy Lumbers have been capturing hearts with their fuzzy pop. I mean how can anyone deny "Cruisers" as one of the best pop songs for driving in a car with the windows [...]

Big things coming from New Jersey and Jersey-based label Underwater Peoples . Matt Mondanile of Real Estate , who Steve saw perform recently, has put out numerous hazy jams as Ducktails . Just scroll down and look at his discography. Enough releases to keep you busy for, well, a long time. And to add to that rap-sheet, he's got SIX upcoming releases. WOAH. So what can we expect? More excellent jams, I'm sure. He's got a split LP with Dracula Lewis coming out on No Fun Productions ; a 'Live on WFMU ' LP coming out [...]
Well, it's almost time for 2nd Northside Festival , during which The L Magazine takes over the Williamsburg and Greenpoint music venues for a few days. The Northside Festival will feature over 300 bands this year. Some relatively big names are playing ( Liars , The Fiery Furnaces , Fucked Up , Polvo ). But what this is really about is the chance to see lots of bands in small venues. It's an indie music overdose. You can get an idea of what it's like by listening to this radio [...]
It's one of those months where I really don't have time to properly write up the mix, but let's see what I can do here in the next couple of minutes. Basically as soon as I heard " An Apology ," I knew that Future Islands would find a way onto a mix. "Beach Foam" goes back to their 2008 album, Wave Like Home . I am on pins and needles for their new album, In Evening Air , which comes out on May 4th. The other song off that they've leaked is " Tin Man [...]

I was going to cover my trip down to Austin, Texas for this years SxSW in a single post, but quickly realized it would be way too long. This is easily the most live music I had ever packed into three and half days. While I got to see everything that I put on my short list, there were literally four to five bands playing at any one time I would have liked to have seen. This was my first ever time at SxSW. I had some rules I wanted to follow: keep the number of garage [...]
