Tweet It's a rainy Saturday where I am, so what could be better than some ethereal psych-folk to pass the time? Luckily, Silver Wren is on hand to provide just that. The solo project of Gainsville, Florida-based Ross Campbell, Silver Wren started in March this year, and has already yielded two mini EPs. Ross has now taken the bulk of them, given it a bit of a polish, and released it as the five-track "Window In The Wreath". It's a pretty engrossing listen. [...]
![[Introducing] – Trwbador](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3602996_lg.jpg)
Tweet Well, this settles it: there is definitely something in the water in Wales. It does something to musicians. I'm not saying it's bad, and I'm not saying it's good, but it's definitely a bit odd. As a case in point, I present Trwbador (I don't claim to speak or read Cymraeg, but I'm guessing that's like "troubadour"). Brace yourself for a touch of the surreal. Trwbador is duo Owain Gwilym and Angharad Van Rijswijk, who hail from Carmarthenshire in the south west. [...]

SPOOK HILL :: SEPTEMBER MIXTAPE :: BOY ATTRACTIONS Walker and I have had this one in the works for a while. We decided a month or so ago (after our last mixtape) that we wanted to try something a bit different from our usual mixes. We settled on the idea of compiling our favorite songs recorded before 2000 that were relatively unknown or obscure (or at least if the artist was relatively known, one of their hidden gems). That was really the only restriction. Interestingly enough, there was a clear divide in the years [...]
Can't talk. Watching Dead Snow . It's a Norweigan horror-comedy about Nazi zombies. It's about the best thing I've seen in quite some time. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there will be themes that link all the songs together, other times I'll just throw songs at a wall (not literally) and see what sticks. No theme tonight, just me watching zombie [...]

As followers of our Twitter are more than aware, Kenny Bloggins has been straight fiendin' the past few weeks. It's probably been annoying as all hell, and I suppose I'm somewhat sorry. But not really - the final season of LOST begins tonight, and we are throwin' down. In the traditional way this blog celebrates all the stupid shit going on in my life, it seemed necessary to throw a Super Swingin' Mix in your vicinity. And hey, it also can serve as sort of a peace offering for my general numberskullery and insolence. So... all the songs below relate [...]
I almost skipped this week's Sunday Mix Tape. There are but four or five days left until my massive Top 100 Albums Of 2009 list is published, and it will contain many, many downloadable songs. I could not think of anything else to blog about today, so I decided I'll skip next week's Mix Tape instead. It's more likely I will feel a hangover from the effort that will go into preparing Friday's blog post, so it will be nice to skip next Sunday. Of course, my last-minute decision to compile some songs tonight left me with nary an MP3 [...]

i'm addicted to blip at the moment, enough to upload songs to blip myself rather than relying on what's out there. and today i did a bit of a tribute to the city of bristol theme. ::: beatnik filmstars - apathetic english ::: flying saucer attack - beach red lullaby ::: crescent - 360 ::: girlboy girl - unfamiliar ::: massive attack - daydreaming ::: the heads - quad ::: k.s.kollective - (to a) secret brother ::: [...]

I drove to the Borders at Sunset and Vine today in an attempt to locate some last minute holiday gifts for friends and family. I left the store empty-handed. Oh well, I guess there's always next year, right? If I'm going to be giving people Christmas or Hanukkah gifts several weeks late, I might as well just hold off and wait until next year, right? Anyway, when I looked at my cell phone to see what time it was, I noticed that I had an hour to kill before I needed to be at work. I walked around [...]

This being an absolutely frigid week in Los Angeles, I think we should turn our focus to the warm, summer months. Specifically, I am thinking about the month of August. That is the month for baseball, barbecues, swimming parties, and - oh yeah - WWF SummerSlam. Have I ever told you about the time I went to SummerSlam as a child? Well, why don't we delve into my memory bank and I'll try to recall as many details as I can about the most famous WWF event I ever attended as a child. Let me being by saying, [...]
Just a couple quick hits today because I have a busy travel day scheduled tomorrow. Amazon.com held a one-day sale yesterday (December 8th) where you could buy the first three seasons of LOST on DVD for $59. I think the normal cost for all three seasons is closer to $200. If you don't own all the seasons, this would be a great way to start. Season 4 was released officially today on DVD and Blu-Ray as well. If you don't want to take my word for it, just ask Podcast [...]

I'm in a rotten mood tonight. I don't want to talk about it. Everything just kind of sucked at work today, which is ironic considering it's supposed to be such a low-stress environment. Rather than bore you with details pertaining to the mundane events I am probably overreacting to, I'll simply skip ahead to the mix tape. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With roughly 100MB of webspace, I give birth to a weekly Mix Tape to be deposited on your iPods or Zunes or Kingklangs or whatever the industry is currently pushing on you. Sometimes there [...]

Post-punk pioneers Wire were oft recognized as a group in a strange nether region - one that was too artsy to be punk, too punk for the art kids. Wire was angular and minimal, with gorgeous melodies remaining subtle and rewarding. As such, it makes total sense to extract those under-the-surface pop structures, add dense layers of sound that the band sometimes hinted at, and reimagine this begrudgingly poppy gem as shoegazing, whose artists also tended to be begrudgingly poppy. Covers of the song "Outdoor Miner" (from Chairs Missing ) spanning ten [...]

it's suddenly got chilly here, which means i can finally shed the shorts and t-shirts and start layering up. right now i'm wrapped up in a thick jumper. i like winter clothes. they remind me of long walks in the country, gloves on and breath steaming; equally long waits at bus stops in the cold; warm pubs with warm bitter; dark monday mornings struggling into work. in my curent nostalgiac frame of mind, i miss all of these things equally. this onset of autumn requires a mix to celebrate. some bands immediately lend themselves to this topic (i'm [...]

When I first moved to San Francisco in the mid-90's my apartment hovered over the corner of Stockton & Columbus streets in North Beach. For the first month or so the only way I could sleep at night with all the yelling drunks, jocks in stupid waist-length leather jackets, screechy Marina-girls, bums fighting shopping carts and yelling at ghosts, buses, cars, yelling, pissing, puking, fighting and partying was to put on Flying Saucer Attack's New Lands and bury it all under a fluffy blanket of white noise. Fans of the Radio Department, Deerhunter and the like should fuzz [...]

Continuing the Decibel Tolls' celebration of Mr. David Madson, a.k.a. Odd Nosdam (featured below, lookin' mighty handome), finally collecting all of his sludgegaze-hop non-LP jams together on one priced-to-own, triumphant double disc collection, Pretty Swell Explode , it's time to celebrate... with a super fun history lesson, complete with classroom activity ideas. Take a seat, kids. One of the obvious standout tracks from the compilation, and his most standout collaboration in my opinion, is "Untitled Sketch" featuring Jessica Bailiff . This song [...]
