April 1, 2008: New Releases from Apples in Stereo, Sun Kil Moon, The Quarter After, and more.

Another busy new release Tuesday is upon us and we sample an array of artists and genres on today's program. As a long time of the Apples in Stereo , I'm very excited that Electronic Projects for Musicians is out today on Yep Roc . It's a b-sides and rarities compilation that spans ten years and several delightful albums. We get to a couple tracks from that, including "Stephen Stephen," a tribute to Stephen Colbert . Also, new music from The Black Keys, Sun Kil Moon, REM, and more. To [...]

lazy sunday #68: 30 marzo 2008

lazy sunday #68: 30 marzo 2008 Sole, finalmente. Spogliatevi. [...]

Beat City Radio March 26, 2008: Justin Townes Earle, Old-time Country, Bluegrass, Americana

Justin Townes Earle On today's show we feature the new album from Justin Townes Earle . His sophomore album, and first for Bloodshot , The Good Life , is out today. If you're not familiar with him, he's the son of legendary singer-songwriter Steve Earle , and that alone leaves a lot to live up to. Justin does so with an album that blends folk, old-time country, blues, and more into a great Americana record. As one that has some, but not extensive, knowledge of the classic country troubadours, the album [...]

Soixante - Neuf

Soixante - Neuf Nash the Slash, who took his stage name from a murderous butler in a 1926 Laurel & Hardy movie ( Do Detectives Think? ), is the nom de guerre of singer/songwriter/musician Jeff Plewman. He made his auspicious debut in 1975. He wrote & performed the soundtrack to Un Chien Andalou , a 1929 silent film by Luis Bunuel at Toronto's Roxy Theatre on March 17 - a 15 minute short before the Rolling Stones' feature Gimme Shelter . He later formed the three-piece progressive-electronic pop group FM with fellow Torontonians Cameron Hawkins & Martin Deller. [...]

Beat City Radio March 18, 2008: New Release Tuesday - DeVotchKa, Sera Cahoone, Destroyer, Be Your Own Pet, and more

Beat City Radio March 18, 2008: New Release Tuesday - DeVotchKa, Sera Cahoone, Destroyer, Be Your Own Pet, and more DeVotchKa Another new release Tuesday is here, and a good day it is. Many good records are out, including one from the Denver, Colorado-based four-piece musical collective DeVotchKa . The group's name is an allusion to Anthony Burgess and the Russian-based word he coined for "young girl." Musically, it's a beautiful and sweeping combination of American folk and punk, mariachi, and Eastern European and Latin American sounds. Among other things, the group scored the Grammy-nominated soundtrack for the critically acclaimed Little Miss Sunshine and released Curse Your Little Heart , [...]

Beat City Radio March 13, 2008: SXSW Showcase; Descartes a Kant, Back Ted-N Ted, Magic Bullets, Basia Bulat, Birds of Whales, etc. Descartes a Kant The 2008 South By Southwest music and film conference is well under way this week in Austin, Texas, and there are quite a few exciting artists being showcased this year. In addition to well-known names like Spoon and R.E.M. , as well as bands that are currently receiving a large amount of hype, such as MGMT and Vampire Weekend , there are a slew of relatively unknown (and quite good) bands performing. On today's show we get to [...]

lazy sunday #66: 9 marzo 2008

A.W. Feldt Joins Us; Also No Podcast Today - Check out these shows.

I'd like to thank A.W. Feldt (AKA Austin Weaver) for joining us for an in-studio performance today. I must also apologize for being severely underprepared and quite nervous (to my credit, it was only my second in-studio session). The interview wasn't complete shite, but it was far from great. A.W. played well and he even showcased a brand-new track for us. We'll post it in the coming days. We'll also post the playlist. For now, I'm a bit down and I'm also heading to Rexburg for the show at Agenda Clothing. If you need something to do this weekend, check [...]

Beat City Radio March 6, 2008: Band of Annuals In-Studio Today

Beat City Radio March 6, 2008: Band of Annuals In-Studio Today Band of Annuals Well, I'm extremely relieved and quite happy at the moment. I had my very first in-studio performance and interview today with Salt Lake City's alt-country unit Band of Annuals , and it couldn't have gone any better (for the first time). The bands members include Jay Henderson on acoustic guitar, vocals, and harmonica; Jeremi Hanson on vocals, wurlitzer, and organ; Brent Dreiling on pedal steel; Jamie Timm on electric guitar; and Charlie lewis on percussion. They really are quite fine folks and I'd like to thank them once again for coming [...]

lazy sunday #61: 27 gennaio 2008 Poche parole, giusto un titolo. Tanti punti, a trattenere, spezzare. Fujiya & Miyagi

Fujiya & Miyagi Fujiya & Miyagi are british (not japanese) electro-rock trio consist of David Best (Miyagi, vocals, guitar, occasional but strictly non-progrock Moog), Steve Lewis (Fujiya, keyboard, beats, programming), and Matt Hainsby (Ampersand, bass guitar). They met through common insterest on Kraut-rock and 90's electronica, on top of Japanese heavy weight wrestler and bad hollywood flick "Karate kid' where the name Miyagi comes from. Fujia is the name of a record player. All this of course brings their incredibally well executed and crisp mix of retro yet never performed before "feel'. They [...]

This 'n That

This 'n That Sad news from Leya ... according to their blog on MySpace , the band has split up! That's a shame really; their album Watch You Don't Take Off was one of my favourites last year, and I was eager to hear more from them. But then... they must have their reasons for the break-up. Another good one gone... :( If you want to listen to the new album by soulstress Joss Stone , [...]
