Jon Ragel is the one man band from Portland known as Boy Eats Drum Machine . As a one-man musical act, he merges the worlds of turntablism and live rock performance as he spins breaks and surgically inserts sounds while juggling vocals, percussion, and saxophone. The results are absolutely mind blowing. His latest album, Booomboxxx, is a complex yet accessible collection sounds and songs that mash together several different musical forms. Fol Chen (Los Angeles, CA) Since playing at Radio Free Silverlake's Let's Independent in March we've watch Fol Chen really come into their own. Yesterday, the band announced that they've signed to San Francisco based label Asthmatic Kitty - home to Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond and my personal favorites Little Teeth. Mason Proper performed the Olly Oxen Free album in it's entirety last night at The Bowery Ballroom . You can listen to the whole album here (do it right now). Please note, their atmospheric indie pop is slightly more revved up and rockin' when performed live. Next time these boys are in town, make sure you get off yer ass and see them even if it is on a Tuesday night. Some crappy pictures I took are... here . I have a feeling there will be some video [...]

Wednesday, November 12, 2008 Before I get on with today's ramble I need to mention Light In The Attic's super Holiday Sale that they have going on. My trusty columnist Noah, who does an assortment of things for the label, emailed me yesterday frantically claiming that people can save somewhere around a "million dollars" right now if they take advantage of the bundles and mark downs. That's probably an exaggeration, but if I were you I'd still take a look. Now, [...]

Big news from local band Fol Chen. They've recently signed with Asthmatic Kitty Records where they'll be labelmates with bands like Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond and Castanets. Be on the lookout for their AK debut, Part 1: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made on February 3, 2009. You can see Fol Chen do a sound installation live at the LA County Museum of Art on 11/15/08. They'll be playing a more (presumably) traditional show at the Echo on 11/18/08. Congrats guys.... MP3: Cable TV photo credit: [...]
I don't know much about Fol Chen, the latest signees to Asthmatic Kitty, but I do know they have some friends in the right places. This track, "Cable TV", from their upcoming February debut, Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune's Made , features guest vocals from Liars' Angus Andrew-- though if you're not paying close attention, you might miss them. The song opens with some psychedelic sitar and reverse-taped strings, with electronic flourishes and simple drum machines providing deceptively complex textures to complement Melissa Thone's vocals, perched high up in the mix. What a wonderful week in Los Angeles. The two shows we helped with went so well. Thanks to all those who came out to The Scene to see four pairs of girl/boy bands play some songs. Congratulations to boxViolet on their new EP Sad Sad Girl and for playing the best show we've ever seen them do. Ask anybody who was there and they'd probably say the same thing. And our warm thanks to Looner, Odd

Image cred: Fol Chen's space . For beautiful reasons beyond my comprehension, yesterday was the day that a new band burst onto the internet like a unicorn magnificently leaping out of a birthday cake, and I was fortunate enough to be one of the first to know about it. I definitely got my slice of secret celebratory unicorn cake. Fol Chen is the heavily digital indie love child of Samuel Bing, Melissa Thorne, Julian Wass, & Rafter Roberts (with the occasional soft caress of Raymond Raposa of Castanets ), some of whom have already [...]

I skated into work ten minutes late and sat down after the requisite "wuddup" to the appropriate coworkers, flipped on the monitor and was about to go into my headphones. Before I got that far the other tech writer asked if I'd heard of this band, Fol Chen. Two youtube videos and ten minutes later, with 20 minutes of documented slack time behind me, I popped over to amazon to pick up this album. Good stuff here, good stuff I think. The sound ranges from light poppy tracks like Wedding Cake to the melancholy drum machine driven You [...]
