I must confess that I find it hard to mourn the death of Amy Winehouse. Don't think of me as a man possessed of a callous heart. Of course the death of a young, talented woman is a cause for sadness. But Ms Winehouse did not die in a tragic accident, as Otis Redding did, nor did a dread disease claim her, as it did Minnie Riperton. Amy Winehouse was a victim of her own excess; she lived a self-destructive lifestyle which first wounded her talent and then (as it appears) ended her life. My empathy is directed at her [...]

Few TV shows ever have so accurately observed the condition of the suburban teenager as The Wonder Years did. One may regard the series, which ran for six seasons (from January 1988 to May 1993), as an exercise in nostalgia. Coming into the middle of a revival that celebrated the 1960s and the beginning of the '70s, it benefited from fortuitous timing, but as a story of growing up as told by an adult man, the timeframe made perfect sense. Some may accuse the show of [...]

After a bit of a hiatus, Wild Weekend comes a-callin' again. Ready for issue 53? Right on and tally ho. This weeks harvest: a gospel scorcher, a garage blast and a soul gem, amongst others. Featuring no less than three songs from vinyl sources, so the purists among you have plenty reason to be proud of me. Make it a wild one, y'all. Let´s begin with a rather obscure bearded folkie: Gary Higgins. If you love his '73 masterpiece Red Hash like I do, you'll be pleased to [...]

The secret of surrealism was that the most banal reality could become surreal, but only at privileged moments, which still derived from art and the imaginary. Now the whole everyday political, social, historial, economic reality is incorporated into the simulative dimension of the hyperrealism; we already live out the "aesthetic" hallucination of realty. - Baudrillard . Created by composer and multi-instrumentalist Jason Swinscoe in 1999, British-based The Cinematic Orchestra lives up to their name with an atmospheric and beguiling combination of ingenious sampling, live instruments and jazzy electronic sound with a great swing and beat. The Cinematic Orchestra's debut album 'Motion' , a soundtrack to an imaginary thriller, took everyone by surprise and was voted by listeners of Giles Peterson's Radio One show as the album of the year .

Hello World...how we feelin' out there? I know your meters must be runnin' dangerously low since it's been a long minute between posts, but no worries. I'm comin' through like Supafly with some high voltage soul power to rejuvenate that ass. Okay then...enough grandiose superhero nonsense. Let's get easy and take it back to the essence... MUSIC : "Mister Boogie" --- Brother Soul (zShare) "Mister Boogie" --- Brother Soul (savefile) I'm startin' this session off properly with a seriously infectious funk groove that will [...]

Rescue me, take me in your arms. Rescue me, I want your tender charms. 'Cause I'm lonely and I'm blue. I need you and your love too. Come on and rescue me. No, it's not Aretha Franklin singing, although Fontella had a very similar background singing Gospel music before moving over to the secular side. This song was her biggest hit, and came out in 1965, two years before Aretha hit [...]

... They didn't say anything. The man and the woman moved closer to each other, The round table between them. The stove was still on and burned the empty pot. She started to get up. One of them shot her. She leaned over the table like a schoolgirl doing her lessons. She thought about being beside him, being asleep. They took her long gray socks Put them over the barrel of a rifle And shot him. He went back in his chair, holding himself. She told him [...]
Finally got my hands on The Cinematic Orchestra's new album Ma Fleur (released June 5th) and it was the perfect accompaniment to my morning commute, which was filled with a heavy fog and fall tree colors hanging out of the edges of the road. The album consists of a mix of purely orchestral tracks along with songs featuring minimal vocals. Their band name really does describe the music best, as it sounds like music that would be played over your favorite dramatic movie. As I was listening to [...]

Fontella Bass - "Hold On This Time" Despite first appearances, "Hold On This Time" is a song of surpassing dignity. Yes, Bass sings of being cheated on, of being lied to and made a sucker. She admits to having been abandoned and used and then, more or less, having begged for more. The history she recounts is one of continual self-abasement in the course of maintaining a relationship in which she clearly holds the lower hand. On first listen, it may seem that Bass is being pathetically dependent and hopelessly undignified when she admonishes this unrepentant cheater to "hold on" [...]
