Here is how the headlines will remember the week. President of the Catholic League is so fired up at Bowie's "The Next Day" music video that he called the pop star a, "switch-hitting, bisexual, senior citizen", while the media hedgefund-scaled hype surrounding The Great Gatsby redux only further reminds us of our current-crap-economic conditions, that finds Santigold moonlighting on "The Office" along with Clay Aiken and Aaron Rodgers to find "The Next Grea...

"OPEN THE GATES" Taken from their Halloween album, 'Open The Gates' is everything you'd expect from a garage based horror track: It's dirty, creepy, sleezy, in your face and brilliant. Us Brits don't really enjoy Halloween like our American friends, but with music like this around, we really ought to.

Continuing the Captured Tracks spotlight, Michael Stasiak of Widowspeak shares some of his vinyl memories. Check out some of the dreamy indie tracks from their debut self-titled album, just released in August. I bought my first records from vendors at the Star-Lite Drive-In movie theater swap meet. The Star-Lite used to project horror movie double features onto a giant white screen that dwarfed the adjacent B&I Marketplace, an indoor shopping center whose main attraction for twenty-seven years was Ivan, a captive and forlorn silverback gorilla. [...]

You know what’s cool every once in a while? When an opener blows the main act out of the water. Although it can be a let-down when the end of the concert comes and you realize your favorite part was over hours ago, it’s always a pleasant surprise to happen upon a small band that you like in a big way. This was exactly my experience at the August 10th Kurt Vile concert at the Rock and Roll Hotel. First, to set the scene: Rock and Roll Hotel (R&R Hotel as we hipster Washingtonians like to call it) [...]
Widowspeak is unique in the way that it makes their grunge style sound pretty. It’s a musing combination.

I was just speaking the merits of Mazzy Star's Black Sessions the other day and here comes along Widowspeak to recapitulate that golden voice of the 90s. Pigeonholing the band is not my intention though, as their songwriting ability is clearly evident in the A-side of their newest 7-inch, Gunshy . The band solidifies the song of the same name with strolling guitar influenced by Link Wray and many-a-Ennio Morocone soundtracked movie. Get lost in this song and stay cool. Currently the band has an LP and a single out on Captured Tracks . [...]

The Brooklyn-based lo-fi outfit churns out another solid collection of crackly guitar-pop -- with a few more-than-gratuitous psych-jams for questionable measure. Woods, a prolific indie-folk outfit out of (you guessed it) Brooklyn, has been quietly churning out consistent slices of lo-fi folk-pop for a good five years now. They've even got their own label: the appropriately named Woodsist, which, since its founding by Woods/Meneguar leader Jeremy Earl in 2006, has released LPs by the likes of Blank Dogs, Kurt Vile and even Wavves. You could be forgiven for not noticing. Woods generally sticks to the sort...

Woods is releasing a new 73 via Sacred Bones on July 19th with more 70s guitars-infused lo-fi rock. Enjoy their new track "Find Them Empty," which is short and psychedelic and wails in all the right places. Tour dates can be found below. And yes, that is marijuana in the above photo. "Find Them Empty" by Woods by forcefieldpr 07-11 Boston, MA - Brighton Music Hall * 07-12 Montreal, Quebec - La Sala Rossa * 07-13 Toronto, Ontario - Lee's Palace * [...]
Brooklyn's Woods has a new track out, "Find Them Empty." This track finds the folk rock band moving towards a style that I've always wished they would explore more directly: The stormy psychedelic rock sounds of the 1960s. With brazen electric guitars signaling a deviation from their freak folk past, the band wastes no time in delivering this slice of lo-fi 60s-style garage rock. In addition to those heavily reverbed guitars, singer Jeremy Earl's multi-tracked vocals really sell the retro sound. Although it lacks the odd keyboard sounds and experimental tape manipulation that defined earlier Woods releases, the jangly "Find [...]

Those hairy butterflies Woods have got a new single of psychedelic guitar pop noise coming out soon. ‘Find The Empty’ is out on July 19 on 7’’ and digital, and you can check out the track below.

One of my early frontrunners for favorite album in this second part of 2011 is Woods' Sun and Shade , which was released (what seems like ages ago) on June 14. To follow this up, Woodsist Records is teaming up with Sacred Bones Record s, pressing a 7 inch single as a companion piece. "Find Them Empty," the A-Side, has been on my exfm playlist for the last four days. Stream it below. They're also set to embark [...]
