Jimmy Vincent is recognized these days for his various acting gigs — he's the guy with the falcon , for one — but back in the day he was an indie-rock explorer with a fetish for gorgeous, ambient drone. In the mid-Aughts, Vincent played in a duo, then a trio, called In Waves, whose goth-inspired compositions turned the volume and reverb up to 11. Rather than the wall of sound, though, the appeal was In Waves' compositional qualities, heavily repetitive and even hypnotic. Vincent passed around a lot of demos and even some finished tracks in those days, and [...]

As we found when he fronted the sorely missed quartet Foreign Born, Matt Popieluch has one of those voices that belongs in the jetstream. Or somewhere in the clouds, which is where you'll find much of the solo material he makes as Big Search . The solo album from 2010, "Lay of the Land," found Big Search searching for solid ground with woozy experiments in guitars and atmospherics. But his new single "Distant Shore" (out Feb. 12 as a 7-inch from Lefse Records ) takes a more reined-in approach — it's simply a beautifully undulating psych-pop song. Dream [...]

I very nearly kept with the themed mixes of vintage tunes, but thought, "No, it's just not fair to everyone..." I know you (like, both of you) count on me for new music, as well as the old, so I needed to bring it this month. And there's still a good serving of old stuff, but hopefully enough things with "20113 in the year category to make this feel relevant if the last few months have felt dated. If you don't enjoy Paul Brunelle's take on country, or Opus 32s cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's "Alone Again;" you're not invited. But [...]

Unfortunately for all of us who have fallen in love with Chuck , we now grieve in the wake of the show's grand finale. But let's take some time to happily reminisce, and remember how he captured all of our hearts in the first place. NBC's Chuck is one of the few comedy-action-drama spy shows that will forever take your breath away, either by laughing too hard or the show's constant twists, turns, and cliffhangers. It followed the life of Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi), a "nerd-herd" computer whiz recruited by the CIA and NSA after all of [...]
In our continued goal to bring you as much pre-ACL coverage as possible, we bring you our second interview of the festival season from L.A. based indie-pop group Fool's Gold . We've been following these guys since their inception, and have particularly enjoyed their new album Leave No Trace. Leading up to their appearance at ACL in a couple weeks, we sat down with Fool's Gold front man Luke Top to ask him about his band's tunes. Follow the jump for full interview. [...]

Foreign Born - Winter Games
LA’s Foreign Born will go on an indefinite hiatus as its members focus on projects like Fool’s Gold & Big Search. Instead of being bummed, let us be thankful FoBo at least gifted us the timeless... **Summary** Go to website for downloads, videos & more.

[With Fool's Gold's show last week still fresh in my mind, it seemed appropos to share this:] It's unlikely (not to mention unfortunate) that we will ever hear from Foreign Born again. With Lewis Pesacov and Garrett Ray having a good time in Fool's Gold, Matt Popieluch making sweet music as Big Search and Ariel Rechtshaid producing anybody who wants to sound great, Foreign Born this month announced an "indefinite hiatus," releasing one final B-side via Secretly Canadian (the label that released [...]

Well, we're just about halfway with the reposts... Today, we feature volumes 9 and 10, which were originally posted in August 2009. Volume 10 holds a special place in this blog's history, because that's when Aaron from Tsururadio offered to post the mix on his blog. That started a bit of following and it has grown ever since. Aaron's moved onto Tsuruphoto, following his passion for photography. He now has a nudie-zine featuring some edgy but tasteful art, several videos to promote the zine and Tsuruphoto, and the occasional mixtape. We owe a big thanks for his early support, and [...]

Sad news coming our way as Foreign Born have decided to turn their focus elsewhere, at least for the time being. I thoroughly loved their record, Person to Person , so I'm sad to see them take a break, but they do have other projects to focus on, such as Fools Gold . Fortunately, before they head off into the California sun, they've left us with a brand new track to enjoy. Sadly, it only makes me wish all the more that they wouldn't hang things up just [...]

We resume our reposts of the Blogophilia series this week with volumes 8 and 8.5. Why 8 and 8.5? Well, I mixed these at the same time, and the tracks came from the same collection of songs I reviewed. Calling one 8 and the other 9 didn't feel right. We've also had a 12.5, and recently a 26.5 for the same reason. Like volume 7, these two mixes really capture the summer spirit. Volume 8.5 has a throw in from an "oldie but goodie." Enjoy... Blogophilia Volume 8 [...]
Foreign Born’s Person to Person remains a perennial summer favorite around these parts. Sadly, it does not look like we will be seeing a follow up to that record anytime soon. Secretly Canadian, the bands label, is reporting that the band will be going on indefinite hiatus as the members focus on other projects. As a parting gift, the guys have offered up a new song, their first since Person to Person . “Keep It In Mind” shakes and grows with the same spirited energy that made their album such a stand-by. mp3: [...]

There are many ways to listen to LMDM but I highly recommend you do as I do - press play, sit back and put your trust in Steph. A lot [...]

Seeing as we're huge fans of Sub Pop , we've known this one was coming for sometime, but we hadn't gotten a chance to hear anything new. Then today out comes "Can't You Tell," the first single from the new Vetiver record, The Errant Charm , coming to you on June 14th. This song has less of a traditional feel for the band, adding a little bit of bounce in their step, at least in comparison to their folk stylings on past efforts. Similar [...]

I'm finding the mysterious backstory a bit exhausting at this point, but the tunes are well worth it. Earlier today, Interview premiered the video for "Clover" by the Foreign Born/Fool's Gold associated band. Via Black Iris/White Iris
