The great news is that I've gotten a good number of emails from bands and artists that want to be featured on future entries of SIGN THIS BAND. Yes, after last week's well of bands ran dry, we can now continue the segment probably through 2007 and beyond. Still, if you'd like to be featured in the (relatively) near future, don't hestitate to email me. Today's band is one that I'm really excited about. Not that the other bands I feature in this segment aren't great or exciting. It's just that this one... well, I've been admirers of [...]
Illustration by Karen Gelardi . Summer jams are easy to pinpoint—they're the songs that make you want to get up, go out, love life, and maybe even make some bad choices. An autumn song is not so simple. It's not as immediate or obvious. It's more an introspective thing that requires you spend some time with it. For our fall playlist, we decided to choose ten songs that could be either, depending on your mood. Download them now to see (and hear) what we mean. " "Young [...]
Probably the first thing to note – or, rather, get out of the way – about Thursday’s Cold War Kids show at the Clubhouse is the subpar turnout. This seems more an indictment of the sometimes-apathetic scene here than Cold War Kids, who, after all, originally were scheduled to open for the Futureheads but had the foresight to keep the dates and headline themselves after Futureheads canceled. Had the show been booked with Cold War Kids as headliner from the get-go, it’s likely a smaller, more fitting venue would have been picked. But inside the Clubhouse, a fairly [...]

I went to see Rogue Wave last night, and if you haven't picked it up yet, I didn't end up liking them the best out of the three groups I saw perform. Rogue Wave was not doing too well (singer was a bit sick, bass player looked like hell), and Jason Collett and his group were, while on the ball, a little boring and too much like Bob Dylan for my liking. Foreign Born was where it was at last night. I was impressed with their EP, but that did little to prepare [...]
I remember going to the DC Convention Center in 1991 to see Riddick Bowe fight Elijah Tillery. Bowe wasn't the title holder yet but was quickly rising through the ranks. As the hometown kid, he was the main event and we were pretty excited. However, the night turned upside down when the best boxer of the night was welterweight Sharmba Mitchell earlier in the evening. The Bowe fight turned into a debacle as Tillery started kicking Bowe after the first round bell which led to Tillery being disqualified which led to a [...]
It's rare that we find ourselves this excited about band news, but many of you already know the vastness of our love for this band. We've called Foreign Born the Best Band in Los Angeles , and we stand by that. In fact, we will extend that praise even further now — the reasons for this will be revealed in a minute — they are the best LA band of the decade, and, at this point, they could survive a fight with any of the young favorites in this country. But to the [...]
FUCK YEAH FEST III IN ECHO PARK THIS WEEKEND I would be remiss not to inform you of the mayhem about to be unearthed in my backyard this weeked. FUCK YEAH FEST IS FUCKING BACK MALL TRUCKERS!!! Now in its 3rd incarnation, the music, art, and culture festival curated by Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks) will bring the best of the best of the eastside/downtown art punk scene under three
I wouldn't say I'm a huge Rogue Wave fan but I like enough of their tunes to get me out to Higher Ground on a Monday night . Actually, the best part of the night is the stacked line-up. Even the undercard looks promising. Rogue Wave is a indie rock band out of Oakland with a bit of a folk-base to some of their songs. However, they certainly rock. This is not a folk show. They have a promotion similar to the one The New Year does for [...]

OK, I get a lot of shit from people for living on the eastside - Particularly for living in Echo Park. Echo Park/Silverlake is definately the "Hipster" area of Los Angeles. It is the promise land for the American Apparel short short wearing, ironic moustache touting, 20-something-on-a-bike-with-a- journal-in-the-front-basket, "I don't need a fucking job," defective youth of Los Angeles. Does the fact that I live here make me a fucking hipster? Residents of Williamsburg (Brooklyn) and Haight Ashbury (San Fran) I know you feel me. I actually got in a heated argument of my sushi lunch (YES, I am [...]
