The Silverlake Jubilee arrives with a bang this weekend, the first-year music and arts festival bringing some 50 bands to a three-stage neighborhood fair featuring cutting-edge DJs, comedy, spoken word, film, art and fashion — not to mention three dozen or so food trucks to satiate attendees' appetites. Buzz Bands LA has joined with Jubilee organizers to co-present the indoor stage at El Cid on Saturday and Sunday night. Eastern Conference Champions — supported by Mississippi Man, Francisco the Man and Polls — headline on Saturday; Useless Keys [...]

Fool's Gold (the band, not the beautiful romantic comedy ) have released a classsy video , via Fader (a little Mambo Number 5 , maybe?), for their excellent track 'Nadine' from their exceptionally good self-titled album (available to purchase from Insound here ). They are playing in Europe throughout April, and will be playing at Sasquatch with too many good bands at the end of May. Fool's Gold feature members of Foreign Born , who put out a great album last year entitled Person to Person (purchase here ). [...]
Filed under: News , Video , New Music , Exclusive Although their musical stylings may reveal their Israeli, Iraqi, Argentinean, Brazilian and Mexican heritages, Fool's Gold are actually a Los Angeles band. Thus, when they went to shoot the video for their latest single, 'Nadine,' they took to a distinctly local landmark. "This video was shot inside a mausoleum at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery on one of those rare rainy nights in Los Angeles, where we were able to perform for a few dozen our close friends," lead singer Luke [...]

[Can't remember a busier weekend for good stuff. Really. So wish Stefani Joanne Angelina Germotta — that's Lady Gaga to you — a happy birthday, and I'll see you at a show:] Tonight: Metric , who played a surprise set Thursday night at a charity gig at the Roxy, headline the Palladium. Codeine Velvet Club and Nico Vega . ... Jay-Z plays to a sold-out Staples Center. ... Radar Bros ., supported by Bell Gardens and Extra [...]

Friday night at the Knitting Factory was an exercise in comparison, a back-to-back pairing that drew attention to the respective strengths of two buzzing bands. Where opener Free Energy rode rock riffs with reckless abandon, headliner Foreign Born featured a controlled set of tunes with more substance underneath. There was something for everyone, but perhaps not enough for some. Free Energy took the stage first, full of ebullience and, um, energy. It was clear that the Philly natives were enjoying themselves; smiles abounded on stage, and the music pumped with [...]

The winters in Chicago can be brutal. They seem to go on forever and the constant gray skies can really take their toll on your well-being. But as the calendar turns to March, excitement kicks in and the end of another brutal winter is near. On this particular Friday in March, everything seemed to be going right as I headed to Shirk's. The sky was blue and it was unseasonably warm. I opened up the moonroof, slipped on the aviators and made my way downtown to the studio, blaring Foreign Born's Person [...]
On Friday night, we saw LA's Foreign Born, old barbershop friends of ours, lock in for a set of Vitamin D-rich, pop jammers at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. Please enjoy the souvenir we took home above.

Last night I drove down to Brooklyn with a few friends with one goal in mind: To rock out with Free Energy. Ever since I saw them open for Hot Chip, they have become one of my favorite new bands. Their debut album Stuck On Nothing is a ridiculously catchy album that I haven't put down yet. Their live show at Hot Chip was so good that we decided we needed more. We found a sweet parking spot on the street, and the best part was it was free. Certainly a lot better than taking a 16 dollar [...]

We're making room in our left brain for some Friday night rock & roll and heading to The Knitting Factory tonight to catch Free Energy and Foreign Born . Are you?! Show starts at 9pm. Don't be a dope! Come on down!
Free Energy ::: Press Photo First impressions are meant for job interviews, not the music business. In case you’re like millions of other Americans and myself, you forgot what it's like to go to a job interview. Let me refresh your memory. A job interview is when you dress up, go to the location of [...]

Our barber shop bros Foreign Born are teaming up with newly featured Free Energy to play what we think will be a pretty "good-sounding" show at The Knitting Factory in Brooklyn this Friday night, March 12th. We've got 5 (yessss) pairs of tickets to give away (that's 10 tickets!) so round up your best Haiku and deliver it to us in the comments section below by this Wednesday the 10th. If it makes any sense at all, we'll pick you and you will go for free. Very easy. You can thank us after the [...]
Foreign Born, the shoegaze, folk-jammy rock that my photographer described sounded "like Tom Petty a little--oh wait, maybe Tom Waits," headlined the Rickshaw for Noise Pop. Playing a lively set that was brightly fun, particularly for the cross-dressing hippies in the front-row, Foreign Born put on my favorite performance of the festival (yes, I did see The Dodos). Whereas I critiqued Man/Miracle for being sonically loose, Foreign Born was quite the opposite. Even singer Matt Popieluch's feet... Read more at www.SFCritic.com

Foreign Born Believe it or not, this was my first Noise Pop Festival . Last year I worked through the whole thing and wasn’t really too happy about that. Weird hours will do that to you. Anyways, I kicked off my experience with the pre-party at the California Academy of Science. Not a huge fan of The Frail but a huge fan of science, so I got to geek out with some friends about both music and the Late Cretaceous period. Har Mar [...]
The LA group passes through town to play the Entry tonight.

Miss Foreign Born at Noise Pop? No problem! See how it was here!

MySpace We'd gotten off pretty clean so far here in Toronto with respect to Winter weather, but while it's hardly a snowpocalypse out there the last couple of days, it seems our run of clean sidewalks and dry feet is finally done - with less than a month left, formally, of Winter. Help, however, is on the way. Not in the form of a renegade chinook somehow making it across the entire continent, but in the a pair of bands whose brand of upbeat, good times guitar pop could be just the thing to chase away [...]

My night ended on a couch in the city followed by 4 hours of sleep and a massive hangover. How was I supposed to know I was going to have so much fun on a Wednesday? My day started off like any other. I worked, exercised, and went to The Rickshaw Stop. Doing [...]

Foreign Born Everyone brought their game last night. Foreign Born is a force to be reckoned with though. Free Energy was also treat. Very fun. And I was very impressed by the Splinters.
