When John F. Kennedy promised the world in 1961 that Americans would land on the moon by the end of the decade, most people thought the notion ridiculous. But 40 years ago today, Apollo 11 landed on the moon, making good on the presidential promise. The Russians may have their Sputnik and their Yuri Gagarin , but it's the American flag that protrudes from the moon's surface, providing a source of pride for all ( well, most ) Americans. In celebration, then, this playlist:

Lenny Bruce once said, the one machine made only for fun is the jukebox. It doesn't cut anything, or mash anything, or staple anything together, it just plays music. When I was a kid we used to go over to visit my grandmother in Louisiana, and she operated a small pool hall in Catahoula, deep in the swamps. I was fascinated with the jukebox - how it found the record you selected, placed it just so on the turntable and guided that needle with precision right to the first notes of the music. When the record man came every once [...]

Save the massive excitement surrounding what was claimed to be his first and only show in the U.S. (though it seems he played Chicago three nights prior ), everything about Wolfgang Voigt's show at Columbia University's Miller Theatre on Friday night was minimal. Performing under the name of his popular ambient electronic project, GAS, Voigt was hardly discernible in the dim light of Petra Hollenbach's video accompaniment, a white, triangular portion of his shirt more visible than his face. Primarily known as a co-founder of the German techno label, Kompakt , Voigt made four [...]
Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are reunited (on screen, they both produced Sin Nombre) once again in this hilarious comedy brought to you by the same writer as "Y Tu Mama Tambien". If the lines for Star Trek are too long on May 8th, head over to your nearest independent and check out this [...]

theme from fame So, I've been finding some great stuff lately. I thought I'd add some current stuff from some of my past favs. Russ chimes (gotta love valerie), fred falke, and p-e-a-c-e fire have rung my bell quite a few times. I've dropped a couple russ chimes songs and remixes, but I don't think he's gotten a formal intro. Russ Chimes hails from London and is on the amazing valerie label. Recently he's dropped some unbelievable remixes of golden filter and college (another valerie artist). He also [...]

We're only halfway through the week, but already there's been a LOT going on in the world of music this week. We've tried to keep you posted on as much as possible, but no matter how hard we try, we just can't cover it all. So, here are a few links from around the web that we think are worth checking out. [...]

Myrone Aiden is a guy from Germany. At least I think that it is a guy... could just be a girl that really loves Iron Maiden. Either way, I enjoy these two remixes. Part of the reason why it's nice to have contributors here on T-Sides is to get different perspectives and tastes. What's covered on T-Sides is what most appeals to us in a wide sea of culture, but it's impossible to thoroughly cover everything that's worthy of attention. There are things we - gasp! - might not know about or be behind on. Enter friend of T-Sides Taylor Brown to talk about the music for Battlestar Galactica, a show we have heard many good things about, but have never seen - and her write-up just makes us [...]

They may only have an album and a christmas EP behind them, but Glasgow's Glasvegas are already performing like a big-time rock band. Grabbing the attention of the US late last year with the release of their debut, self-titled album, Glasvegas have packed New York City venues of increasing sizes, including their most recent stop at Webster Hall last Monday. Entering the stage amid blue strobe lights and fog machines, they opened with their hit, "Geraldine," about a social worker, "I'll be the angel on your shoulder / my name is Geraldine, I'm your social [...]

Myrone Aiden , as it sounds, might most likely be a play on the name Iron Maiden. He hails from Germany. And you remember that Digitalism remix contest they had? Well, he didn't even submit his track. And this is one of the best I've heard.. Not too straying to much from the original and not covering it with crap sounds we just get annoyed by. Very classy made. Here are some tracks of this hidden gem called Myrone Aiden . It's electro (duh), a bit dancy, new-waveish. What the fuck am I [...]

We admit, we got our private little spying-imp, surprising us in irregular intervals with hidden stuff of his very special own private precinct. Let's call him Ax 2day. He's taller than 7 feet, aristocratic and takes care of his appearance in any single moment of his daily grind. We wrote him letters several times a week, but he only keeps on replying with a special reason: 3 days ago was the day we received a loveletter of Ax introducing some new synthiepopping electronic gems to our bored minds and dusty lives. This time's epicenter of our attentions is [...]
We have to admit that we've loved this track from Basshunter almost a little too much to describe, in all of its glorious pop brilliance, pomp and Eurodisco. And the new treatment from Los Angeles's Clockwork reminds us why, with four minutes fifty-eight seconds of start-stop vocals, staccato synths and drums and the hesitant vibes of a song of losing love and the hope of finding it again, all wrapped up in a dancefloor epic. (mp3) Basshunter - Now You're Gone (Clockwork remix) Godspeed!

"What kind of music do you listen to?" That question came early on in the day, the day I worked with Glen. And from that point on, music was all we talked about. Glen is 41. Has a wife and a 3-year-old kid. Owns 1,500 CDs. Has seen the Ramones three times. Slayer twice. Alice In Chains is his favorite Seattle band. And he claims emphatically that 1970 was the greatest year for music. Glen and I stock ice cream. It's the first job I was able to get since [...]

The British trio Thompson Twins made inroads in America with the release of their 1983 album Sidekicks and the hits singles Lies and Love On Your Side . Even though Lies managed to make its way into the Top 40, the group's synth-heavy, dance pop was more successful in clubs than mainstream radio. That changed, however, with the release of Into The Gap in the spring of '84 and its lead single, Hold Me Now . Less frenetic than earlier releases, Thompson Twins incorporated elements of world music [...]

As promised, T-Sides is once again tapping the writing well. There hasn't been much in the way of live shows to whip us into a frenzy, but new release season is finally picking up. Quick-witted Lily Allen has a new one that doesn't quite live up to the pop accessibility of her first, and there are not one but two albums by actor-musicians that are actually quite good: Coconut Records, solo project of Jason Schwartzman , and Steve Martin's bluegrass record . Additionally, to celebrate Valentine's Day, the Popdose staff chose to [...]

Is it just me or does it seem like we could all use a little bit of saving nowadays? Whether we're buried in snow, financial troubles or something far less tangible, we can't help but secretly wish for that certain something (the lottery) or someone (Barack Obama: the new superman?) to whisk us away and solve all our problems. Allow me to appeal to your sense of the dramatic in this week's How Many Licks , your insight into the provocative preoccupations in the lives of our indie musicians. Guilt or pleasure? You be the judge. [...]

Frightened Rabbit could not have been more different from the setting for their acoustic, all-request set at Le Poisson Rouge on Monday night. Le Poisson Rouge's pricey beverages and bottle service attracted an audience more interested in being seen there than being there, as the sound of chatter rose above both openers, Joe Pug and Gregory & the Hawk. The scene was a stark contrast to the hairy, earnest Scots who took to the stage with plaid shirts and holes in their jeans. But try as they might have, a band as raw and emotional as [...]
