Following the devastating fires of 1910, early fire detection became a priority within the Forest Service. To help aid detection, lookout towers began to be built on national forests throughout the country. These building efforts were further aided during the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, who worked on numerous lookout building projects across the nation. The photos contained in this set represent just a small segment of the images of forest fire suppression efforts found in the Forest History Society Photograph Collection . [...]

Not only is our Throwback Thursday friend Dan good for epic posts connecting Modest Mouse with the ecojustice movement, but he's also a great source of music recommendations. Today he hipped me to this band, via Afropunk . New York's Wishes and Thieves has a dreamy yet epic vibe that feels like it shouldn't work, but somehow does. Afropunk says, "This is music for rainy afternoons but also dance parties." Again, doesn't make sense, but tell me they're wrong after listening to "Forest Fire," the title track off their 2012 EP [...]

"You decided to sleep on me, that's your loss." Martin $ky is back with something new, just two weeks after the release of his latest EP, Member$ Only . The suburban teenager has a supreme work ethic, and continues to get better. "Forest Fires" is his latest, and I'm gonna dub it as on of his best tracks to date. Plenty of quote worthy lines here, and a reference to Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law. You can't go wrong with that. Listen to the new cut and download it below. Also check out [...]
Wishes and Thieves describe their sound as "electronic induced pop". Their smooth synth tunes definitely fit into that category, though a dose of R&B and a pinch of swagger also make up the mix. The NYC-based band recently released the EP Forest Fire , a slow burning five-song scorcher. Check out the titled track above, as well as the video for "Let You In" here . Wishes and Thieves have a few gigs in NYC coming up, including this one in Brooklyn tomorrow! Check 'em out: August 3rd [...]

Bummer news from the Facebook page of super-great death-grind killers Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire: "Hi. A wheel bearing seized up, became hot, caught on fire, seperated the wheel from the van and caught our van as well as a neighboring field on fire. We are playing in Boise tonight at the [...]
I crossed this ad while tearing through my regular blog intake. It gave me the wtf-lol's. Seriously who came up with this? How does this work towards the goal of not promoting forest fires? When did Smokey the Bear get relevant again?
This New York acid jazz combo look to impress with their first EP. I would say that they have a success on their hands. Read more »

A sprawling, verging on chaotic folktronica mix up that takes the entire genre at least one step forward.

B3SCI took to the streets of Austin in March for the 25th annual South by Southwest. We braved/raged through the musical flurry of performances, ridiculous entourages, grid-locked streets, fantastic rumors and more while covering some of the world's top breaking talent. Below are some choice highlights from our experience (during festival highlights here ), including our most recent Virgin Mobile Live broadcast featuring tunes from festival acts as well interviews with Fast Years, Tashaki Miyaki, PAPA and Saint Motel tracked on the streets of SX. Denver sludge/grind trio CLINGING TO THE TREES OF A FOREST FIRE have just confirmed a Spring tour for the second half of March. The 7 Years Of Disillusion Tour will storm through fifteen American cities between March 13th and April 1st, including an assault on the Northeast with shows throughout three of NYC's boroughs alongside [...]

You gotta love the old school style on this track by Forest Fire. It just instantly grabs your attention with it's addicting beat and like a tractor beam it sucks you right in. I realize this is a slightly older track, but I only recently stumbled upon this song and haven't been able to get enough of it since. "Future Shadows" just has such a refreshing and upbeat vibe that only a few seconds into this one it's hard to not find yourself whistling along or tapping your feet to the rhythm. A definite mood lifter [...]
