I apologize for the little hiatus I took from blogging. Now that its summer I've been traveling a bit up and down the California coast. I stopped in Carmel for a bit. The smoke from the fires in Big Sur still haven't fully cleared. The sky was tinted the smokey orange while the sun set over the ocean. And it felt good to escape from the City Of Angels. It was up in Carmel that I discovered Forest Fire , Catbird Record 's new discovery. The small but mighty record label just recently released [...]

fitting to hear that survival , the debut album from brooklyn-based forest fire , was recorded over eight months, as the album and the songs that make it up, languid & rambling, thickening in spells of dissonance & then airing out again, appear to be in even less of a hurry than the band. "slow motion; sweetheart, survival," refrain the band on "slow motion," and that would seem to be exactly what they're up to. occasionally the songs, two of our favorite of which are on offer below, several more available for download on myspace , feel, [...]
Sunday, July 20, 2008 Hello friends! It's been a very busy week for me. As John said earlier, we're working on a redesign of the whole website that we hope to have up and running soon. But with all the time I've been playing Pimp John's Website, I haven't had much time to dig up the dirty-deets on new releases this week. So instead, here's a playlist for your Sunday enjoyment. If you like what you hear, you're in for a special treat, because all of these songs are pulled from albums [...]
:: Matador had a bit of trouble this week with a Jay Reatard seven-inch pre-order deal. :: Jarvis Cocker has done some music for the new Wes Anderson flick . :: Been wondering where Eminem 's been hiding? Me either. However, Idolator has some tidbits . :: Johnny Cupcakes is making progress on his new LA shop. It's like the Disney World of fake bakeries. :: Ryan Catbird is hyping his latest release from [...]
Yeah, that's right: Forest Fire are playing their first show since the release of their wildly successful new Catbird full-length Survival (which you can download for FREE here if you're a cheapskate). Swing by Southpaw in Brooklyn tonight to catch FF, Susu and The Kiss Off . And in case you were wondering what everybody's been saying about the new album? Here you go: "5/5 stars" "I'm OBSESSED with this album" "Amazing, amazing" [...]

catbird records is "a boutique indie label specializing in limited- and short-run releases", the latest of which is forest fire 's full length album survival . following the steps of radiohead and more recently, girl talk , survival is offered as a download for a "pay as you wish" price. as the album opener, the free-flowing folk of "i make windows" is at once beautiful and dissonant, never trying to hard to please, but also never too dull to let go. mp3: forest fire - i make windows

The good folk(s) at Catbird Records are welcoming the debut album by Forest Fire called Survival by giving it away to anyone willing (and smart enough) to give it a listen. You can download the 10 tracks that were recorded over 8 months in studios in New York and Portland via a number of services ( iTunes , eMusic , Facebook etc.) and experience these languid, beautiful songs for yourself. Then, if you like [...]
The song "Fortune Teller" is pure mixtape fodder. I don't love the rest of the record. I will, of course, encourage you to see for yourself. But, for me, Forest Fire's record is just ok. In fact, Motel Motel does a slightly more heartbreaking, alt-country version of the same sound. So you can download the album. Do it in a few minutes. It's free. You might like it. But for now, this song is
Not the easiest of Google searches, that one, but amazing what useful advice it turns up. Now, you know my sparkly new record label that I'm slowly levering into existence? Well Catbird Records were pretty much all the things I am trying to do myself, only at least three years older. So [...]

Forest Fire - "Slow Motion" . Dear Sofia, I think we can make this work. I've had dreams of knocking on your door. When I'm awake now I still hear the knocking. I hear the knocking everywhere. I went to your house and I stood on the front walk and I thought about knocking. I almost knocked. But the knocking is so loud in my mind, bang and bang and bang, that I decided that was enough. I let my head's, my heart's, my dreams' knocking be enough. Did you hear me out there? I walked away [...]
I've said it before and I think you all will agree: free MP3s are like college freshman girls-- nothing beats 'em, especially when they're legal. They're also a lot like bad, inappropriate jokes-- actually no, no they aren't. They're more like puppies-- ehh ok enough with the schtick. Today's mpFree features a band called Forest Fire whose debut Survival was made available for free recently from our friends at Catbird Records . Forest Fire , a group of Brooklynites and Portlanders, spent over eight [...]

Well, now that terms like "Post- In Rainbows ," and "The Radiohead Model," are here to stay, it's good to know that the trend, a good one for music fans, as hyped as it may be, is being utilized by bands who know how to play music and labels who know how to get music in the hands of listeners. I can't think of a better instance than the new LP Survival from Brooklyn-based Blog/Label Catbirdseat/Catbird Records . Forest Fire is quite accurately described as " Homegrown [...]
Forest Fire - Sunshine City. This is the sound of riding home after a relaxing summer night. You're all alone, windows down, slow heart, no mistakes. Traffic's not bad and the air's just right. But still, you're driving, which isn't ideal. Thus the slightly dissonant harmonies that creep in at the end, with that beautiful buzzing guitar that hovers like bad posture in the background. You're inches away from it, with gauzy thin clothes in the heat, but you just can't quite relax. This is the sound of convincing yourself that it's going to work out in the end. And...

Forrest Fire released Survival via Catbird Records , and, knowing nothing about the band prior to today, am very impressed . I've come to expect that from Ryan Catbird though. The album is made available in some very consumer and pocketbook friendly alternatives: $5 for the album or pay what you want download . However, nobody's making you decide without a little sampling first. You can stream the entire album here and download the album opener/my favorite track "I Make Windows" below. [...]

I'm very happy to announce immediate availability of the newest Catbird Records release; it's Brooklyn's Forest Fire , returning with their full-length follow-up to last year's sold-out Psychic Love Star EP. Francois Virot has a new record that just came out on Frenetic Records on June 16. This psychedelic freak folk singer is probably an odd choice to follow yesterdays post on the band Embarrassed Fruits, but if you're open minded and like weirdo rock like Animal collective, early Robyn Hitchcock and even something like Herman Dune you should fare OK. "Say Fiesta" has moments that share a lineage with the artists mentioned above but it also clearly channels David Bowie and Captain Beefheart. This is probably only the third time I've mentioned a French [...]

You know sometimes when you buy a record and you know instantly that you are hearing something that just feels SPECIAL. Well Do Make Say Think's "You, You're a History in Rust" is special, very special. But it deserves its own special column. For now let me assure it is greatness smacked down and laid out. Having said that I am feeling very satisfied at the moment musically. Firstly, in the live arena I have witnessed tremendous shows this year by M. Ward, The Mountain Goats, Neko Case, Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird, Calexico and The Dears. Some great [...]
About 6 months ago, on a whim, I downloaded a torrent of demos from a band I'd never heard of. Yadda yadda yadda, today, I'm happy to announce immediate availability of their new six-song EP on Catbird Records . The band is called Forest Fire , they're from Brooklyn, New York, and I like 'em, obvs. ::: Forest Fire - Psychic Love Star ::: This Wednesday, February 21st, come join us for the Forest Fire CD Release Show at Zebulon [...]

Forest Fire is Mark Thresher, Myisha Battle, Adam Spittler, and Jeremiah Stewart and they reside in Brooklyn, New York. A Neil Young twang from a bootleg sound circa 69' was my first impression with the vocals, but with slow, minimal, in the box sound that sparked my interest. I came across the band through my contact with the above post of Black Dragon and thought I would pass it along. Of the four tracks to sample on myspace, How High has definitely jumped out as a stand out and most certainly [...]
