Saturday's gig was, I think it's fair to say without excessively blowing my own trumpet, fucking outstanding. What fun! There were flowers everywhere - thank you for those of you who made an effort, and didn't leave me alone to look like a pillock by myself - the music was great and the gin flowed in epic quantities. The open mic stuff at the beginning was great fun, so a big thank you to everyone who played. We had two lovely songs by Alison and Tom from Aurora Stands in Snow, and then a couple from Scott Renton [...]

Greetings my Summery flock of Toads, how are we all doing this fine morning? Or afternoon of course, depending on where you might be located. I was advised once by Johnny Pictish not to put on gigs during July or August because getting people out to them was a near-impossibility. I don't know if this is just Edinburgh or if it applies universally, but certainly the promoters of this fair city seem to have taken it heart because there is really is sweet Fanny Adams happening in the next couple of weeks on the live circuit. [...]

The Festival is a bit mental in its own right, but this year it is also rather annoyingly commandeering the Bowery for six weeks to pimp shitty bottles of Magners to punters and in doing so depriving us of one of the best places to go to see live music in the city. Bastards. Anyhow, before closing up until September, there Ruth and Jane are having one last big piss-up which happens to coincide with a Toad Night. We've got an hour of open(ish)-mic beforehand, with some splendid people booked, and then we have Glasgow's extraordinary Yusuf Azak [...]

Yes, it's that soon. And it will be bloody good. The Bowery is closing over the Festival to be taken over by the usual commerical shitfest which swamps any semblance of culture in this city during August, and next Saturday will be its last night until the Autumn so help us celebrate the amazing work they've put in this year in some style. As it's the Summer and is allegedly (stop sniggering in the cheap seats) going to be a good one for a fucking change I thought we could all dress in flowers to celebrate. In fact, [...]

TV personlity Ed McMahon has passed out today at 86. He was one of the first reality / variety shows hosts. Here's a short bio: "Edward Leo Peter "Ed" McMahon, Jr. (March 6, 1923 – June 23, 2009) was an American comedian, game show host, announcer, and television personality. Most famous for his work on television as Johnny Carson's announcer on Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992, and as the host of the talent show Star Search from 1983 to 1995, he later also became well-known as the presenter of American Family [...]

Funnily enough, the most interesting music events this week are being held as part of the film festival. Not funny "ha ha", though. Happy Monday. Wednesday 24th June 2009: All Tomorrow's Parties documentary at the Picture House This is something rather special. It's described as a" unique 360 degree music event". Firstly, the film sounds incredible. It's compiled from footage contributed by both fans and artists at the festival, shot on super 8, digital and mobile phone, as well as footage from Vincent Moon ( the Take-Away [...]

Well, after a bit of a lull last week there's all sorts of crap going on in and around Edinburgh this week, so choose wisely because trying to attend everything could just be the end of you. As well as the usual recommendations there are a couple of half-recommendations this week; gigs I feel I should want to go to, but am actually not that fussed about. Crystal Antlers (I mean, come on, they have Crystal in their name, they have to be good, almost as guaranteed as having Fuck in your name last year, or Bear the [...]

Well, erm, Thursday should be fun. This weekend was somewhat written off, after an apocalyptic drinking session on Saturday took its terrible revenge on Sunday, rendering most of the day a ruin apart from shitty movies and too much Chinese takeaway. To everyone who came round to the house on Saturday, I apologise. It was a fucking good party, though. Our next door neighbour seems to have the habit of opening a window and playing terrible music as soon as we go out in the back garden, which is both tedious and foolish. Foolish because our stereo can [...]

so take a sip and wait for the next one to appear FOUND - Let Fidelity Break W ith a lead singer named Ziggy and a penchant for using household objects as instruments these guys could have easily ended up sounding like a hippie acid trip jam session. Luckily for us they have got their business done up tight, and right. "Let Fidelity Break" blends spastic, tweaky instruments under Ziggy's stutter-step vocals to craft a track that makes me want to bang along on my pots and pans. [...]

Now this is direct marketing. Spotted down on Sutter & Montgomery. (via Wardinger's Photo of the Day )

Found are off to play at SXSW at the moment (support them by buying this ) and one of the gigs they'll be playing there is the Hype Machine Radio launch party . Hype Machine Radio heavily involves a friend of mine called Dev Sherlock from Blogfresh Radio , who has been about as supportive as humanly possible of Toad Records, of the blog itself, and of pretty much all of the bands who I've sent his way. Pairing up with the Hype Machine is great news for Dev, I assume, partly because [...]

Hello everyone - sorry for the lateness of this post, but unfortunately sometimes actual jobs with wages and things have to take precedence over things Toad, just for a little while. I have spent the day at a meeting in Inverness, and I am desperate for a really good sleep. There's not a lot on in Edinburgh this week as far as I can tell. The brilliant Animal Magic Tricks is playing pretty much as I write this, and I am gutted that I won't get the chance to see her. Well, not until Saturday, anyway, which is [...]
This week I will finish the live videos for Ten Tracks and eagleowl, to go with the Rob St. John ones here: In other news, the lineup for the Fence Collective's annual liver-bothering get together has been announced , and it's fucking superb: * KING CREOSOTE * MALCOLM MIDDLETON * EAGLEOWL * ROB ST JOHN * SLOW CLUB * BURNS UNIT * THE PICTISH TRAIL * THINGS IN HERDS * CANDYTHIEF * EMMA POLLOCK * JAMES YORKSTON * DAVID THOMAS BROUGHTON * MEURSAULT * DE ROSA * [...]

These guys really were terrific. Chris Croasdale plays a nylon-stringed guitar at a bloody good pace, the sound of it is fantastic, and the songs seem to build from a stumble to a furious gallop over the course of four or five minutes. It's not just the guitar though, this is just a very economically and well-assembled band. Johnnie Common's electronic trickery, and the raucous drumming of Roy Shearer all play crucial parts in the music, and all three of them sing. They don't seem to play all that often - I've only seen them twice in a [...]

Here I sit on the train back up to Edinburgh, marvelling at the snow-covered countryside and wondering idly to myself at quite how effectively a couple of centimetres of snow seems to have brought the entire country to a total standstill. It is, after all, just snow. Lots of people have snow and somehow manage to keep their infrasructure from completely grinding to a halt. Mind you, to complain seems a little churlish, and very very English, when there is snow to be enjoyed. We are warm and on the train and it is pretty out. Unfortunately the [...]
