Frank Yang I would say that a band that's been around as long, as influential and as consistently excellent as The Wedding Present has been over their quarter-century existence is entitled to a little indulgence, and what better occasion than the 21st anniversary of one of your most beloved albums? But indulgence isn't the Wedding Present's style, so rather than make a big production of it, they rolled into town on Wednesday night to do their thing, same as they've done a number of times since David Gedge put [...]

Well, I'm happy to say that 2009 was a significantly better year for me that 2008 was. Although I managed to say away from really bad news for the most part, I did have to step up my work schedule quite a bit for mildly unfortunate reasons, which meant that the opportunities to take part in this here blogging hobby of mine had to suffer, just a little bit. Whenever I did find a moment to post something, there was usually a belated show review that I had to get to, which meant that I didn't get a chance [...]

Procrastination nearly gave me a swift kick to the head last Friday night, when up until about noon that day, it looked like I wasn't going to get in to the Rural Alberta Advantage 's sold out show at Lee's Palace. I don't know why I didn't think it was going to be a problem since, according to a very reliable source, the RAA is currently the hottest band in Canada . Thankfully, I was one of the fortunate ones as I was able to squeeze in at basically the last minute. Sometimes it's kinda cool knowing someone [...]

Frank Yang It was just 51 weeks ago that The Rural Alberta Advantage first stepped onto the stage at Lee's Palace, there as support for a co-headlining show featuring two of the most lauded indie acts in Canada - The Acorn and Ohbijou . They seemed a bit awed by the scale of their surroundings, having mostly played the smaller, cozier rooms of the city to that point, but were far from intimidated and deliver another wonderful set and as I commented at the time, "I've long said that people [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] 40. Goodbye Doris - Fox Jaws (2007) Barrie's Fox Jaws are easily one of my favorite live bands, and I make a point of trying [...]

It seems our random question machine might have met its match in eclectic Toronto-area up & comers Fox Jaws . These fine folks had not one, not two, but three of their band members match wits with our question machine, which is indeed a new record. Fox Jaws is a five person indie rock outfit, originally from Barrie, Ontario (I think they've now relocated?), that pairs large soundscapes with catchy songwriting and the gritty voices of Carleigh Aikin and Daniel Allen. Their debut full-length, [...]

Frank Yang Toronto has a reputation for being standoffish, but I personally don't get it - I think we're downright neighbourly. Or at least our bands are. Or some of them. Consider excellent The Balconies , just moved to Hogtown from Ottawa in the last couple months, and they've already scheduled a record release show for their excellent debut album at Lee's Palace and they've gotten some of the buzziest up-and-coming bands in the 416 (and probably the 647 and maybe the 705) to join them. That's next Friday night, September [...]

For a few years now, the Summerworks Festival here in Toronto has been an excellent way to promote independent art and theatre in the city for an affordable price. Last year was the first time that the organizers decided to include live music into the schedule and I heard that it was a great success, even though I personally was unable to attend. This year thankfully I was, and even though I didn't get to have as great a share as I would've liked to, I was very happy with the bands that I did get to [...]

Fox Jaws Major Grange El Mocambo in Toronto, Ontario on August 21, 2009 Full Photo Set (16 photos) Barrie-based Fox Jaws often plays in the Toronto area, and as a result I've managed to see them more than a couple of times just because they were playing on the same bill as bands I went out to see. However, the last two times I've seen them, the band has [...]

Reviews of Fox Jaws, The Balconies and Daniel Hales & the Frost Heaves There's a strong possibility that you're thinking: more CD reviews?!?! What about the usual concert reviews? Hasn't this guy been to any shows lately? Well the answer to that question is: yes I have, and I'll hopefully be posting some reviews of those shows next week. But for now, I've got a few more CD's I want to tell you about before I take off to the cottage for the weekend. Correction: I've got a few more GREAT CD's that I want to [...]
August 18th will see the sophomore release of another southern Ontario band. That will be the day that Barrie-based quintet Fox Jaws unveil their new album At Odds (or, Exercises In Separation While United In The Fall). I think they took album naming lessons from Rock Plaza Central.More details about tour and hopefully a sneak preview of the record when we get more info. Fox Jaws' websiteFox

Audio Blood Media artists will be out in force-like numbers at this year's North by Northeast Festival. Fox Jaws, Whale Tooth, the lovingly-spastic Black Hat Brigade and Oh No Forest Fires are just a few of the 13 artists to take the stage and wreak havoc in some of Toronto's finest nightspots. Audio Blood has made available a sampler of tracks from all of the artists which you can find here . We'll oblige you with [...]

Music News, Local News, Indie News, Et Cetera.... Having grown bored with processing the photos I took at a show I attended on Friday night, I figured that I would take a break by visiting this here blog. No reviews or opinionated rants today, just a random whack of music related news that may or may not interest you depending on what type of stuff interests you these days: I didn't participate in this weekend's Over The Top Festival , mainly because I found myself dealing with [...]

Since the backlog of music we have is enough to fill a Super Guppy , we'll keep the comments fairly brief and let the music speak play for itself. Actually, there's so much to get caught up on we may have a second weekend inbox on Sunday. Thanks for your patience to all the nice folks whom have sent music to us, and special thanks to all that take time to visit even with the long breaks between posts due to that four-letter thing called work. No particular order [...]

Should I be worried that some tortured souls make me happy? It's just a fact that there are some artists out there who have built their career on depressing music yet oftentimes, those very songs for some reason put me in my happy place. The Smiths , for example, are funny to me, but not depressing. The Cure makes me dance. To some people this is just weird. Thankfully, there are other artists that do manage to somber me up, like Ryan Adams for instance. I suppose the fact that I do not derive joy [...]

You can categorize this one somewhere between an incredibly cool, incredibly insensitive and an incredibly Canadian idea. We fully expect to get some hate from both Canadians and the hearing impaired on this one, but we couldn't help to notice the extreme irony of a proposed concert for the deaf that will take place on March 5 in a small club in Toronto. As reported by The Guardian , Ryerson University 's Centre of Learning Technology and the Science of Music, Auditory Research and Technology Lab have announced what they call [...]

Pretty much right up until Friday, I wasn't 100% sure if I was going to head out into the cold to check out the show at Sneaky Dee's. The original thought of seeing Golden Hands ... (look, I'm so lazy I shorten their name even more than most people do) play with a bunch of my favourite semi-locals was too good to pass up. But once they had to cancel, the whole dynamic of the evening turned this into a much less necessary affair for me. Still, as the week wore on I realized that what I was [...]
This is the first update available exclusively through the website; the Yahoo Groups site will continue to exist solely as an archive of the last 5 year's archives. After going through the update, please do poke around the site, and peruse some of the articles; many of them mention weekly recurring shows, and shows yet to appear on the Events Calendar (though that is my next website priority). (The full week in Toronto's performing arts events, after the jump!) IN THEATRE, The Next Stage [...]
