Our buddy Anthony Valadez tipped us to this nice lights-pulled-back version of Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing" by NYC artist Francis and the Lights during his (must listen) Monday night KCRW show this week. The track's more collected, pensive performance is an interesting counterpoint to Ye's told-ya-so braggadocio on the original. We already posted the full White Room show of Francis And The Lights a couple weeks back, but for those of you who didn't have time to watch the 25 minute performance, do yourself a favor and check out the footage of a new track, "If They Don't Come Tomorrow". The new tune was the show closer and you should definitely watch it all the way thru for the pretty awesome closing. I already traveled out of town to catch a solo-piano set by Francis, so I'm thinking I can't miss the next White Room.

Francis And The Lights performed a couple of their White Room show's in Troy, NY on October 28th and 29th, followed by a screening at a movie theater in NYC on the 30th. These shows require plenty of preparation by frontman Francis Starlite, including sometimes building the stage platform himself. Francis has posted the 25 minute concert film on his YouTube page. You can enjoy a new song in there as well, "We Can't Save Her". Gracias Francis.

Ottawa-born folkie Kathleen Edwards tapped boyfriend / tour mate /Bon Iver head Justin Vernon to help create the lonesome sound that was last month's single, Wapusk . The collaborative nature doesn't stop there, though, as Vernon and a slew of other artists also leave their mark on Edwards' upcoming new album, Voyageur . Co-produced by Vernon and Edwards herself, the record sees the Wisconsin resident also play banjo, guitar, xylophone, bass, and piano. Additional cameos include Norah Jones, Phil Cook (Megafaun), Sean Carey (also of Bon Iver), Stornoway, and Francis [...]

Francis Farewell Starlite has been making beats as Francis and the Lights since 2008. He recently toured with Drake, MGMT, and La Roux, which you might not guess based on the style of his music. According to this EW interview , the "Lights" aren't his bandmates, but could instead mean the lights onstage or pixels on a computer or iPod screen. He's so often called enigmatic that it might eventually wear itself a little thin, but for now, his funky and soulful music is enough to almost entirely satisfy my craving for the genre. Mp3: [...]

Photo by G. Francis Farewell Starlite Happy birthday to Francis Farewell Starlite, lead singer of Francis and the Lights . I've seen Francis in concert several times and in addition to being a great performer with good songs and a fabulous stage presence, he is one of the very few performers that really mixes it up when it comes to the live performance. I've seen Francis perform with a full band as well as a solo piano show. He pulls them both off effortlessly and with each [...]

Hey fellow music lovers. Bruce from Some Velvet Blog here. I am seriously late for my shift this week, but I think I got a good excuse. A couple months ago I decided it would be really cool for the radio station that I work at - WXPN to webcast the Roots Picnic tomorrow here in Philly. Crazy, right? With a main stage lineup that includes Little Dragon, The Dismemberment Plan, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Esperanza Spalding w/ the Roots, Wiz Khalifa and Nas w/ the Roots, I [...]

Now, thanks to their Tumblr game, we've got two new joints to drop off to you from the creative guru. ' Eiffel Tower ' and ' The Things That I Would Do ' were created in collaboration with L.A-based group Inc , and the result is the smoother side of Starlite. Check out the streams and indulge! The United States East coast and multi-day music events don't have the best history together. Just ask All Points West ... or Vineland ... or M.I.A. . But this August, the MTK Festival will look to change that with an inaugural billed topped by indie heavyweights Vampire Weekend and Bright Eyes. Set for August 13-14 in East Hampton, New York, the festival - known properly as the Music to Know Festival - will also feature Matt & Kim, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Tame Impala, M. Ward, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Dawes. Rounding [...]

(All excellent photos in this post by Greg Cristman ) The 2nd annual Sweetlife Festival took place this past Sunday at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. The event was organized by Sweetgreen and featured performances by The Strokes , Girl Talk , Lupe Fiasco , Crystal Castles , Ra Ra Riot and a host of others.

(Nick Panama, Will Griggs, Jesse Israel - by Kyle Dean Reinford) New York City. 2005. Two guys, Jesse Israel and Will Griggs, share a typical introductory conversation sophomore year at NYU. The chat naturally turns to music within thirty seconds. Conversation turns into action. Parties are thrown, records are played. Soon they decide to get serious and make the obvious move to bring a kid from California named Nick Panama into the fold. They aren't sure exactly what they plan on doing: A) Manage bands B) Book shows C) Put [...]

Here is Francis and the Lights from last night's Jimmy Kimmel performing their songs "Darling, It's Alright" (above) and "For Days" (below) from last year's album It'll Be Better (which is on sale for $3.99 right now at Amazon ). Check out the album versions of the two tracks below as well. "Darling, It's Alright" by Francis and the Lights from It'll Be Better "For Days" by Francis and the Lights [...]

I am in Peter's Room - the Roseland 's more intimate performance space - and it's far too bright for the type of loungey pop music played by Francis and the Lights . With the glare beating down on him, front man Francis Farewell Starlite may actually need the big sunglasses he's wearing. Mr. Starlite and his backing band begin with "It'll Be Better," and he shimmies reservedly along with his feet planted firmly together. The trend of limited movement continues during "WYN" and "Lime," and he refuses to take advantage of the expansive stage area. By the [...]
