At the height of their powers in the early 1990s, a visit to London for The Frank and Walters would have perhaps included a television slot on Top of The Pops. In 1992, for example, an unknown band from Oxford, launching their debut album, Pablo Honey, supported The Frank and Walters for the duration of their UK tour. Much has happened in the 20 years that have passed. The Franks, (as they are affectionately known to their hard legion of followers) became a cult band that put out an album every few years without too much [...]

This is the first of a regular feature where I'm going to compare and contrast two very different singles from current Irish Artists. Battle #2 The Dirty 9s released a new single from their soon to be released second album. Straight away I hear a clear difference between 'Hey' and their earlier debut album. The indie edge is still there but there's a freshness about 'Hey'. This fun three minute pop song epitomizes what the band are about. Fergal's vocals are pivotal to the [...]

We had a Mic Christopher tribute night in Boyles Slane last night in an attempt to turn something stupid [ie Arthurs Day] into something amazing. And amazing it was. The first hour saw some of Irelands most talented songwriters taking turns to play the whole of Mic Christopher's Skylarkin. It got me thinking of my favourite cover versions! The Frank and Walters - Funky Cold Medina [Tone Loc]

We could probably all the tell the game was up when Niall absconded and they started using gimmicks like cute girls on keyboards but we all just chose to close our eyes and block our ears and just dream that the most underrated band to emerge from these shores would finally reach the promised land. The return while glorious in its live incarnation never truly ignited in the studio but no matter how many times the Franks shimmer into view smiles are guaranteed to follow. Sigur Ros may have invented their own language but this Cork threesome were there nearly [...]
