Warming up with several 'Doolittle'-era b-sides, the crowd was feeling it right [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive While 'Doolittle' was the Pixies commercial breakthrough upon its 1989 release, it still feels like an album well before its time. Of course the same could be said for the Pixies in general. But after praise from bands like Nirvana and Radiohead and a memorable 2004 reunion tour, the Pixies have found their place in the 21st century. Now 'Doolitle' is getting a second chance as well. To celebrate the album's 20-year anniversary, the Boston band doing an [...]

Many (many, many, many) years ago a family friend offloaded her unwanted copy of the Pixies 'Bossanova' album on my pre-teenage ears. Having read Kurt Cobain rave about the Boston outfit in multiple interviews I was happy with the unexpected addition to my collection. I don't think she realised the impact this gift would have [...]
As far as collaborations are concerned, anything goes in this day and age. Punk icons have been spotted mingling with teen princesses, while Weezer has made an entire record featuring contributions from Lil' Wayne and Butch Walker. It may very well be a sign of the impending apocalypse, but a proposed collaboration between comic singer "Weird Al" Yankovic and members of Boston alt-darlings Pixies might just be too amazing to fathom. The collaboration between this unlikely pairing will occur at a benefit in Los Angeles. Yankovic is scheduled to appear on stage with the band to [...]
In anticipation of Art Brut's high-energy kick-ass rock show at the Bluebird Nov 6, the Bartender invited Eddie Argos to have a drink and a chat. Discussions were had. Stories were almost told about debauchery with Brian Jonestown Massacre. First things first, what would you like to drink? And don't say tea because we don't have any. Vodka, Cranberry and a dash of soda. On the internet it says you guys are from South London. Tell me a little about your home and making a living [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , UK It's the middle of the Dead Weather 's three London shows, and Spinner's first thought is -- let's hope the band's earplugs are made of stern stuff. Jack White (the White Stripes ) and Alison Mosshart's (the Kills ) sideproject might come from the blues delta, but volume wise it's like the soundtrack to a rocket testing range. 'It Might Get Loud' is the name of the film where Jack White, Jimmy Page [...]

Filed under: Video , Exclusive Ever since their sold-out comeback tour in 2004, Pixies "reunions" have come around periodically, with their latest regrouping in honor of the 20th anniversary of their landmark 1989 album, 'Doolittle.' In the wake of a predictably successful run abroad, the US leg of the tour will kick off in Los Angeles on Nov. 4. The band will spend the following month taking 'Doolittle' to American audiences nationwide. "I guess we're kind of like a Led Zeppelin that tours," frontman Black [...]

so i've just finished the third revision of my top 100 albums list — which to avoid confusion/arguments is a personal selection, not an attempt at a best of all time list — and to build some interest/excitement in the list beyond myself and the 1-2 other people that have traditionally cared about this i've decided to do a ten day countdown leading up to my number 1 album choice, vh1 best [whatever] of [decade] style. [100 - 91] [90-81] [...]
(The following is a review of the 21-track physical release of this record. 20 high-quality bonus tracks are available to purchase individually or as part of a deluxe package via iTunes.) "The songs of Mark who?" It's a question that fans of the artists on this tribute record have probably been asking themselves ever since this project was first announced. And if you're equally guilty of being unfamiliar with Mark Mulcahy, join the club or legion as the case may be. Consequence of Sound has long championed Mulcahy's work [...]

Here's a random mix for you. No reason for it. Just some songs that I've not gotten round to fitting in any posts but that I think deserve to be heard. So I thought I'd herd them all together like rogue sheep into this random mix. Enjoy. Broken Social Scene - xerxes (live acoustic session version) Coldplay - we never change (live acoustic session version) original version available on 'Parachutes' The Dandy Warhols - not if you were [...]

Little Thom Yorke has been a busy bee of late, what with him and his mates playing Reading and the announcement that he'll release two brand new solo singles tomorrow, one called 'FeelingPulledApartByHorses' and the other 'The Hollow Earth'. Exciting. He's also contributed a track to the new Twilight film (details of which are due to be announced very soon) and there's also this track, 'All For The Best'. This cover is part of a benefit CD for Mark Mulcahy, who is the frontman with cult American band Miracle Legion . The CD will help raise funds [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Last night at Dante's in Portland, Ore., Black Francis , aka Frank Black , stood alone in the spotlight and played acoustic versions of Pixies songs and his solo work. Diehard Pixies lovers mainly comprised the packed Musicfest NW audience in hopes the fellow Portlander would oblige them with some classic tunes. It wasn't until an hour into Francis' two-hour set when their wishes were granted. Donning a black leather jacket and black rimmed glasses, Francis [...]
Having spent last weekend soaking up all that All Tomorrow's Parties has to offer, I realized that there is really no other festival in the world quite like it. It's a community formed in a weekend for the sole purpose of listening to some great music, and it's an amazing experience. Listening to Wayne Coyne blabber on and on about how thankful he was to get a chance to curate the event you realize how special it is to do that. So with both thoughts in mind I present to you my Top 10 list of potential curators. None have [...]

Filed under: UK , Band of the Week If you're going to name your band after a scene in a film, you have to choose the right scene. No giving your band a moniker which salutes the first time we clapped eyes on Jar Jar Binks, or that scene in 'Silence of the Lambs' where Buffalo Bill does that dance. Shiver. Dinosaur Pile-Up have the right idea. Peter Jackson's 'King Kong' might have made a very long meal of a great ape tale, but it did have one [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News The new Brooklyn, N.Y. home of the Knitting Factory opened with a dramatic bang Wednesday night, as hometown favorites Les Savy Fav performed a packed set of post-punk anthems. After comedian Hannibal Buress warmed up the crowd with jokes on Lil' Kim and Lil' Wayne , LSF frontman Tim Harrington appeared in a bizarre poncho and pointed hat, ready to inaugurate the relocated venue with a shower of sweat and beer. Harrington is one of indie rock's [...]
i've slowly begun working on the third revision of my personal top 100 albums list. as planned, this year i am making the transition to a one album per artist limit... which has automatically disqualified twenty excellent albums from last year's list (see below). this has been a hard step for me to take, but i think one that was ultimately necessary to maintain the integrity of the list. there are definitely benefits to allowing multiple albums per artist... a second favorite album pick can in some cases tell more about a person's tastes than what [...]
mp3: frank black - los angeles i've been playing catch up recently on the ever-growing mounds of new content on beck's website . the excerpt below is from the first part of a conversation beck had with tom waits a little while ago... and well, i beg to differ with mr. waits and mr. hansen. TW: ...Actually, Sinatra tried to do a song about Los Angeles. It was really lame. Really lame. It embarrassed the shit out of me. BH: That was [...]
