Tenlons Fort , the musical stronghold of itinerant songwriter/filmmaker Jack Gibson, swings back through Los Angeles for a few shows next month — including a return visit to Buzz Bands LA's SecondTuesday songwriter night at Lot 1 Cafe, where the band turned in a memorable performance last July. Joining Tenlons will be one of the L.A. folk scene's stalwarts, Olentangy John , giving one of his final performances before he switches coasts and moves to NYC. Also on board for BBLA's monthly showcase in Echo Park: Xander Smith , the Run Run Run frontman who just [...]

Frank Lenz: Holy Rollers Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Frank Lenz is a multi-instrumentalist on Velvet Blue Music . You may not know his name, but Frank Lenz has had a hand in many of the bands you know and love. Everyone from Pedro The Lion , Richard Swift , The Weepies , Starflyer 59 , Headphones , Everest and The Lassie Foundation have all enjoyed his company at one time or another. Leading an eclectic life musically has also carried over into his personal life [...]

Frank Lenz is no stranger to film scoring. He provided the tunes for Strictly Background a few years ago, and now he's back at the documentary soundtrack game. Lenz has lent his talents to a doc about Christian card counters. And yes, that's exactly what it sounds like - church-going folks that play blackjack professionally. Titled Holy Rollers: The True Story of Card Counting Christians , the picture has been featured everywhere from The New York Times to Variety . The soundtrack is out today [...]

TW Walsh - Puppy Dogs Need Haircuts Too My barber had a mullet. I picked the barbershop because it had those old-timey colorful swirling poles out front. On my way in, I nodded at the guy sitting out front. He did the little Indian head wobble . I'm still not used to that. It's a completely neutral expression. He wasn't nodding that I should come in, he wasn't making any value judgement about my existence, he was just letting me know he registered my nod. It can be [...]
:: Weird Al is Nostradamus , eh? I always felt like he was more of an Edward Cayce or Wolf Messing. :: Poor Dolly Parton . Or should I say, poor Dolly Parton's plastic surgeon. She doesn't even look as much like Dolly Parton as a man impersonating her ... :: If you enjoy clubbing baby seals, you should reconsider your pastimes. Because if you don't, I'm assuming Dillinger Escape Plan 's Greg Puciato will end up breaking your clubbing hand . And your clubbing arm. And [...]
:: Former Knack frontman Doug Fieger passed away Sunday after losing a half-decade battle with lung cancer. :: Billy Bragg is still going strong on his anti-bank campaign. :: Them Matador mugs are the cookin'est record label I've ever seen. :: Dolly Parton was hoping you had a good Valentine's Day over the weekend. Did you get a present as good as the Lady Gaga Poker Face picture disc I got [...]

A couple of weeks ago at the Los Angeles United Film Festival, I caught a screening of "Strictly Background," director Jason Connell's poignant documentary that looks into the lives of 10 people who chase The Dream by working as movie extras. [Here's the trailer .] The film, just released in North America in March, not only interested me for its storylines but for its score, done by Frank Lenz , a longtime session guy from Huntington Beach who's played with some of my favorite SoCal bands, including Starflyer 59. (He's currently Richard Swift's drummer.) [...]
Scars on Broadway didn't work out. I'm still not entirely sure why. There seems to be some consesus that their album sucked, but I didn't think so at all (and neither did my colleague Sammy O'Hagar, who reviewed the record). In any case, it's a moot point, because at the end of the day, all [...]

Looks like Frank Lenz has a new album coming out on Velvet Blue Music . It's titled Strictly Background Sountrack , and the release date is May 4. You can also hear two tracks from the record on Velvet Blue's MySpace page . Let's just hope that it measures up favorably to Lenz' last album, Vilelenz and Thieves . Judging from these two tracks, that looks to be the case. And in case you're not familiar with Lenz (for shame), in addition to his solo work he's also [...]
:: A dude from Activision had something to say about the new Metallica edition of Guitar Hero. Probably that it sucks. But that's just my guess. :: Josh Fiedler and Chad Alan (formerly of The Juliana Theory , currently of Vesta ) had a nice long talk with fans over at Absolute Punk yesterday. It's just not as awesome without Brett Detar there, right? Nothing is as awesome without him. Or so I'm told. :: Band of Horses is playing Carnegie Hall . Ooh la [...]
Does anyone remember Frank Lenz ? The man has been a part of bands including Starflyer 59 , Fold Zandura , The Lassie Foundation , Cush , Headphones , Mortal and etc., etc. Well now he can put film composer on his résumé with the documentary Strictly Background , about movie extras in Los Angeles. The beginning of the trailer makes it seem like a Ricky Gervais ripoff, but it actually looks really good. You can order the soundtrack through the film's website [...]
