New album Alert: Frank Schweikhardt has just released his newest album 'Kitchen Table'. While the album was expected and I am aware of FS due to his incredible previous album "Life But No More" I was more than pleasantly surprised to hear this new project. The album isn't a departure from his previous sound yet it still sounds like a completely new beast...I can't really convey my thoughts clearly (maybe it is a larger sound?) but hopefully you get a little bit of what I am saying. His sound is not folk and not indie-pop but yet [...]
Husband&Wife have a new album out, called Proud Flesh , and it's quite easily their strongest album yet. Husband&Wife began planning Proud Flesh several years ago, while they were working on Dark Dark Woods . Wanting to release a downbeat rock album first, they recorded Dark Dark Woods , and kept the upbeat songs for their follow-up. As a result, these songs are seasoned and well thought out. Last night Husband&Wife celebrated their [...]

Hey boys and girls, going to be near Bloomington this weekend? Well then you should head to XRA Fest ! There is a great lineup as always, and made even better that Backseat Sandbar 's very own Brother Stephen will be playing on Sunday! It'll set you back a well-spent $5 per night, or and even better spent $8 for both nights if you buy tickets in advance from TD's or Landlocked . Head over to the XRA Records site for some more info. I was recently challenged to create a list of 10 bands you can't ignore this summer. However, since you can always just ignore them - but you better not ignore them! - and because this will serve as the first of many lists celebrating Buzzgrinder's upcoming ninth birthday, we've brought you nine bands you shouldn't ignore in the coming months. And instead of raving about normal Buzzgrinder touchstones (which I could do, since J. Roddy Walston and the Business , These United States , Rodeo Ruby Love and a bunch of others have [...]

Bloomington's Husband&Wife are working on their next album due out within the next few months. The band has posted two songs for a limited time as a free download. Promoted as a "zero inch" , side A of the digital single is a demo of Don't Stop , with a remix of I Got Fat on side B (originally on Dark Dark Woods ), remixed by Matt Coleman . Their upcoming full-length album has [...]

the most interesting thing i learned this week is that the french translation of krautrock (rock choucroute) is something along the lines of rock and roll sauerkraut. i'm hoping this is true. if not i'll lessen the disappointment with guinness and the new e.p. from turzi. it's the usual composer oomph followed by listener oof. a thoroughly gallic take on the germanic. motorik beats ahoy. cowbells over can chug. treated guitars over silver apples oscillations. i dare anyone with a sense of rhythm or melody not to dance like a motherfucker to any of this. yeah so four tracks on [...]
Given the volume of music available for consideration on One Track Mind, we invariably have to pass on a lot of tasty morsels. In a desire to share even more great, free music with you, the Sunday Sampler will offer a handful of tracks without the usual critical and biographical write-up. Less talk, more tunes: Star & Micey "So Much Pain" from Star & Micey (released on 10/20) [ download ] [...]
Frank Schweikhardt is one of the many Bloomington artists I'm excited about. His debut full-length, Life But No More , is coming out on November 17th on Bloomington's Crossroads of America Records , and it's one of those albums that you feel intimately attached to after a few listens. Frank recorded the album with several seasoned Bloomington artists: Mike Adams ( husband&wife ), Tim Felton (husband&wife), and Zac Canale ( Morrow ). You'll find him on sporadic tours when he [...]

As I've settled in to my new home in Bloomington , Indiana, I've been getting to know who the local artists are, going to shows, and sitting down with people involved in the local music scene. According to Andy Goheen ( Sticky and the Bees , E.P. Hall ) who organizes shows for The Bishop , Bloomington has over 500 bands. Shortly after moving here Nicole O'Neal ( Hipster Spinster ) asked me to co-host a radio show with her. We decided to call it [...]
You heard it here first! In a joint effort, Crossroads of America Records and Flannelgraph Records (both from Bloomington) are releasing a series of records on 33 CDs that will be released monthly (2 releases per month) as a year long subscription service called the Laminar Excursion Monthly . Sales will open up on Monday, November 2nd and they are EXTREMELY limited to only 100 copies. Each 33 CD will be approximately 20 minutes of new, unreleased music from each artist. Lots of the bands involved frequently play here in Louisville, so it [...]
