This fact may be hard to believe, but throughout their long and storied career the Preservation Hall Jazz Band have never released a studio album consisting entirely of their own original compositions. The legendary New Orleans act will change all that come July 9, with the release of That's It! via Sony Legacy. The 11-track record, which was recorded at the band's home-base at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter, was co-produced by Pres Hall's own Ben Jaffe and My Morning Jacket front man Jim James , [...]
It's been a long time since we've featured a slideshow of funny signs, so I thought maybe we could all use a laugh - or at least a smile. Frank Sinatra - "When You're Smiling" (You can also access music in left column.) Click to view slideshow.
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Holy Hell , The Hit List AFP Music has a peculiar power. It's long been known that listening to classical music -- the Mozart Effect -- can help students preparing for exams. And a gardening expert recently discovered that plants actually become stronger and more disease resistant if they're exposed to Black Sabbath 's "Sweat Leaf" and other rockers. [...]

Space. The final frontier. Or, as some know it, the 100 Kilometer High Club: the most romantic place off of Earth. While humans have gazed up at the moon and made love under the stars since the beginning of civilization, only a select few have actually had the privilege to get it on among those heavenly bodies. In fact, NASA has long contended that none have done so.
If you're like us, you probably couldn't quite stifle a rueful sigh at the news earlier this week that a woman in Colorado was arrested for assaulting her boyfriend after he refused to stop blasting Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" on the stereo. It seems there've been several such reports of late, and while there's nothing funny about domestic assault, the whole thing did get us thinking about songs that have managed to get their fans into hot water. We decided to investigate further, and came up with this selection of music that has landed fans in trouble in various amusing, ridiculous, [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive , The Hit List Getty The documentary " Searching For Sugar Man " received the Oscar for Best Documentary in February. It's about a singer named Rodriguez who was virtually unknown in his home country of the U.S., but was incredibly popular in South Africa and it's only now thanks to the movie's success that North Americans are doubling back and figuring [...]
I'll never forgot the time I met Phil Ramone. It was on a Saturday night in 2001 at an after-party for Sarah Brightman following her concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Before my publicist friend introduced us, I never would have been able to pick Ramone out in a crowd, but I'd been familiar with his name since 1983 when I'd peruse Billboard's Hot 100 every week and see it listed as the producer of hit single after hit single from Billy Joel's An Innocent Man album. [...]

Thank you, Frank Ocean . The 20/20 Experience would not be what it is if it had not been for Channel Orange . In no way am I saying that the N'Sync -ster's latest album ripped anything off. No, but a lot of ideas on The 20/20 Experience are based in some of the bold approaches Frank Ocean took in the R&B genre that would not have been welcome without the success of Channel [...]
It’s time again for Friday on My Mind , our weekly blog post where we look at videos centered around a common theme. This is a collaborative effort between KEXP and King 5 News. It’s St. Patrick’s Day this upcoming Sunday so we’re looking at songs about luck. Ireland has observed the religious holiday of St. Patrick’s Day for the last 1,000 years every March 17th, which is said to be the day that Ireland’s patron saint, St. Patrick passed away back on 461 AD which was unlucky. Oddly enough, it turns out that St. Patrick wasn't [...]

In 1976, Frank Sinatra wrote the letter below to Chicago Daily News writer, Mike Royko. Royko was a Sinatra fan, but he had written an article questioning the special treatment Frankie had received while visiting Chicago for a concert. Read about the origins of this great piece of ephemera here .

Massachusetts-based producer CHEATCODE gives Nas' classic "Street Dreams," A definite imaginative mash-up of the time-honored single. By combining elements of both Aerosmith's 1973 single "Dream On" and Ol' Blue Eye's vintage ballad "Young at Heart," over CHEATCODE's heavy percussion, the remix is definitely one to peep. '

Massachusetts-based producer CHEATCODE gives Nas' classic "Street Dreams," taken from his sophomore album It Was Written, a rather imaginative mashup of the time-honored single. By combining elements of both Aerosmith's 1973 single "Dream On" and Ol' Blue Eye's vintage ballad "Young at Heart," over CHEATCODE's crushing percussion, trembling bassline and crunchy synths, the Commonwealth producer skillfully blends over five decades of music history into one seamless remix. Conceptually, the remix reveals the juxtaposing vantage points of a young Nas revisiting his childhood dreams of being rich, while a seasoned Frank Sinatra dreams of buying back his youth. [...]

I've decided to formalize a type of post that has already shown up a number of times on the GMC, and by formalize I mean that I'm going to give it a name and add it to the 'categories' tab in the left column (like I did a while back for Fantastic Foursomes). It's the kind of piece that focuses mostly on the story behind a particular song, rather than just presenting a bio of a specific performer. A couple of examples from the past would be That Scandalous Song and [...]

I don't usually write about current TV shows but there is one that caught my interest when I first read about it, because its subject matter looked perfect for nostalgia-loving geezers - the Las Vegas of fifty years ago. After watching a few episodes, I'm happy to report that it's very well done, with clever storylines, snappy dialogue, and a lot of deep, fully-drawn characters. If I had a criticism of the show, it would be that I wish it would incorporate more of the music from the era. After all, Vegas has a long history [...]
