I haven't written much about my Kindle lately, even though I'm as happy as can be with it. One reason I haven't mentioned it is that I mostly try to write about musical things, and even though it does play MP3 files I'm not sure if that counts as music related. But I do know of at least one definite musical connection - Sinatra is on my Kindle. No, not MP3 files of his singing (although I could do that). I'm talking about a book I mentioned in a previous post , James Kaplan's FRANK: The Voice . [...]
Looking to buy good music in Nashville? Look no further than Grimey's New & Preloved Music . Spin magazine has ranked the store as one of the top indie record shops in the nation, calling it "A stalwart of indie cool in a town that's known for a very different kind of music scene." Paste has also chimed in, calling "the Southeaste's premier vinyl emporium" a "community record store in the truest sense of the word." To find out a little more about what exactly is popping in the shop these days, here is a [...]

Regular readers know that I've offered up a number of pieces about crooners, and will also recall that I've written about Bing Crosby more than once. In fact, just a week or so back I featured him in a post called Laughing At The Cowhand , and another - Bing Crosby Gets a Mulligan - is one of the most-read ever. But today I thought I'd feature the early Bing Crosby, a period in his life when he more or less reinvented the art of crooning. It's a little ironic that my inspiration this time [...]

GVSB Another year of covers done, and it was - for me, at least - a pretty good year. Which I think rates lower than "very good", but I'll take it. And it was a pretty good year for The Flaming Lips , as well. After returning to active duty as a band who makes records, rather than a band who makes films and commercials and whatnot, with last year's Embryonic , they spent 2010 doing what they arguably do best - put on amazing and outrageous live shows. [...]

So it's a Thursday afternoon, you're hungry. A pizza could make do, but what you really have a craving for is Heath Ledger's soulful rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" from the bleachers in 10 Things I Hate About You. You don't have Heath, but Muse's version will make due. It sounds [...]
Armed with his eponymous debut EP, John Nagle is aiming to find out if jazz can still be received well if it took on a modern edge. While the release is not perfect, there are moments that remind us Nagle is on to something. If he can maintain the riveting balance of pop and jazz found on the EP's highlights, his upcoming full-length could be everything you wish contemporary jazz was: stylish, suave, and actually entertaining.

Frank Sinatra: This Happy Madness Moliere Trailer

The night started with an offering by the two daughters of Frank Sinatra . The ladies, who reminded me of the Real Housewives of New Jersey, gave Simon a monogrammed hanky. I found it odd because I doubt that Cowell has ever shed a tear and probably has a sneeze handler on call to wipe any stray boogies. Moving along… Aaron Kelly will be going home. We should just pack it up now and save ourselves some time. Despite having Harry Connick Jr. mentoring and playing the piano, Aaron failed to step outside [...]
Mike Patton's "Mondo Cane" is a project where the Faith No More singer reflects on Italian pop songs from the '50s and '60s with the accompaniment of a 15-piece band and 40-piece orchestra.

March of 1960 was a busy, eventful month for Elvis Presley. On March 1st, Elvis shipped off from Germany, returning home after a two year stint in the U.S. Army. Colonel Parker scheduled a train ride from New Jersey to Tennessee, alerting towns along the way that Elvis would be rolling through. Throngs of fans greeted him at every stop. On March 20th, Elvis and his entourage chartered a bus to Nashville for the first recording session that would become part of the Elvis Is Back album. "Stuck on You" and "Fame and Fortune" [...]

Chicago, Chicago that toddling town Chicago, Chicago I'll show you around I bet your bottom dollar you'll have some fun in Chicago, Chicago the town that Billy Sunday couldn't shut down On State Street that great street I'd just like to say They do things you won't see on Broadway You'll have the time, the time of your life I saw a man who danced with his wife [...]
The snow is falling, and I plan on being a shut-in all day long. Last night you can probably picture the scene: I loaded up on groceries, came home go get ready for Lost but squeezed in an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race beforehand. I think this might be my new favorite show. Contestants don't take themselves too seriously -- and there's lip-syncing!

Okay, so it's the end of the first day of a week working from home and it's not boding well. I've already cracked through a lot of Walker Brothers and Scott, a fair whack of Francoise and now I've got the big guns out with a spot of Frank. It doesn't look good, people. And I'm taking you all down with me. Do you all know this album? It's not flawless but there are some crackers on here - and, well, it is Frank. And, oh, just listen to those strings... [...]

Tommy Dorsey & Frank Sinatra Fools Rush In Bow Wow Wow Fools Rush In (Kevin Shields Remix) Earlier last week, within the space of twenty minutes, I'd heard two separate versions of Johnny Mercer 's Fools Rush In in two different places. Kismet, y'know? Obviously Fate had something dastardly in store for me if I kept up the same breakneck pace I am known for, so I resolved to live life [...]

Is it just us, or have Brussels Sprouts and Sriracha somehow become almost en vogue these days? We cannot seem to escape either one - well, perhaps it's because we watch The Food Network a little too much, but still. . .Between being tempted by B Spot's sriracha wings or indulging in Lolita's infamous fried brussels sprouts, one cannot help but to start viewing each ingredient as very unlikely subjects of style and chic-dom. Case and point - while Jose was flipping [...]

Tonight, so long as this fucking rain stops, the Yankees and Phillies will go head-to-head in the World Series! It's been nine long years since the Yankees last won the World Series, good for the fourth longest drought without a championship in Yankees history! So we're pretty anxious to get this one going and root our team over the defending World Series Champs! Here's a few tunes to get you in the mood for the game tonight... Frank Sinatra - "New York, New York" Jay-Z (feat. [...]
