Today's Live Performance actually is part live performance, part art-film, part animation, but it is definitely entirely - the full 2 hours and 45 minutes of it - Frank Zappa. Baby Snakes is a movie which includes footage from Frank Zappa's 1977 Halloween concert at New York City's Palladium Theater, backstage antics from the crew, and stop motion clay animation from award-winning animator Bruce Bickford. baby snakes are called snakeletts. Initially, the film had particular difficulty finding a distributor. Frank Zappa tried to interest United Artists, the company that released 200 Motels, [...]
Frank Zappa: Zoot Allures [ Purchase ] For those who have written off Zappa's music as a bit too busy and a bit too weird, here's a four minute instrumental that will hopefully make you give the former "Movie King of Cucamonga" another chance. Recorded live, the title track to his 1976 album is a mid-tempo jazz/rock fusion piece featuring Zappa's guitar solidly in the forefront. You can also hear Zappa regular Ruth Underwood on marimba, Dave Parlato on bass, Lu Ann Neil on harp and future Missing Persons Terry Bozzio [...]

December's headline death probably is that of the great Cesária Évora , who emerged from the tiny West African island of Cape Verde, a former Portuguese colony. But as a soul fan, percussion maestro Ralph MacDonald is my headline departure of the month. He wrote some stone-cold classics and appeared on an impressive catalogue of soul and fusion albums, including those released in their heyday by Bill Withers, George Benson, Donny Hathaway, Ashford & Simpson, Brothers Johnson, Margie Joseph, Patti Austin, Grover Washington, Maynard Ferguson, The Crusaders, Michael Franks, Eric Gale, Bob James, Herbie Mann, [...]
I hate to sound like Tom Hanks in the movie Big but "I don't get it". On December 21st, Frank Zappa's estate released The Frank Zappa AAAFNRAAAAAM Birthday Bundle 2011 which is a digital-only release of Zappa covers and previously unreleased live recordings by Zappa himself. The "challenge" with this compilation is that there appears to be no unifying theme linking either the tracks included or the selection of cover artists. Without this – this compilation comes off as a random hodge-podge of songs. [...]
In honor of what would have been Don Van Vliet's 71st birthday on January 15th, the Frank Zappa estate have unlocked a 36-year-old recording from their vaults: Bat Chain Puller , a 1976 Captain Beefheart LP that was prevented from being officially released due to a legal dispute between Zappa, the album's producer, and manager Herb Cohen. Though the late avant-garde rock legend did manage to put out four songs by recording alternate versions for 1978's Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) , the original set has remained only in bootleg form for nearly four decades. In [...]
Zappa Plays Zappa, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie November 19, 2011 Finally. A gig worthy of the term 'muso', to the extent that you could have paid a three figure sum to get in early and witness the soundcheck (and probably have a bit of banter with Dweezil and the band). The maintenance of an ongoing musical legacy probably generates profits greater than that of some small nations, and t-shirts at £20 and proper shirts for £55 go a long way to keeping the family business in [...]
Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, orchestral and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. Strictly Commercial is a compilation album by Frank Zappa. It was released in 1995, two years after his death. Read [...]
In past instalments of this series I have been very careful to issue a caveat about the music that I would feature, emphasising that the songs were chosen not because I endorsed them, but because they had the power to transport me back to a particular time or place. This caveat still applies, but it is becoming less necessary than before as the series goes on. This episode features some of my all-time favourite singles, and a few songs which I don't mind hearing again. There is only among these eight songs from which I'd emphatically have to distance myself. [...]

Monday Music – 16 January 2012
Monday Music is the one post wherein Some Of It Was True! abandons it's London-music focus to go global... Creep - Animals (Feat. Holly Miranda ) The third single from Brooklyn duo Creep (two girls, both called Lauren), this is as good as their first and most-famous, Days . That one saw them collaborate with The xx 's Romy from some indie grind; this time the equally ephemeral Holly Miranda is roped in, and the tempo shifted to a spectral pop, with [...]

My First Album - Frank Zappa/Captain Beefheart - Bongo Fury
Who the hell gives a 7 year old a Frank Zappa record for Christmas? My oldest brother Joe did. On Christmas morning in 1974 a copy of Zappa's latest album Apostrophe (') was under the tree for me. Joe and I used to love to listen to Dr. Demento on the radio and he heard "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" once and figured I would love all the poo poo jokes. I did. But I also loved the music. So about a year or so later when I found out that Frank Zappa was [...]

Frank Zappa - Roxy & Elsewhere
Writing about the first album I ever bought with my own money (Zappa/Beefheart's Bongo Fury) set off a huge Frank Zappa LP listening frenzy that is still on-going. And the one that's been getting daily spins is Roxy & Elsewhere , a (surprise, surprise) double live album from 1974. In Zappa's huge and diverse discography, this is often mentioned as a real highlight and I'm inclined to agree that it is one of his best. The band he had at this time and their repertoire successfully combines rock, jazz and classical extremely well and is a great [...]

Dancin’ Fool
Frank Zappa - Dancin' Fool (Soulwax Edit) (1979) It's a very gentle but dancefloor-friendly edit by 2 Many DJ's, the proper sections are extended and looped, and the bitcrusher works.
