Gorgeous and gentle atmospheric pop music is always a guarantee from L.A. artist Michael Orendy, aka Frankel . He's intoxicated us with his sweetly swelling orchestrations on his two previous albums "Lullabys for the Passersby" and "Anonymity Is the New Fame," and he's preparing to offer his latest collection of gems in form of "Sugar Twists Like Hurricane." Slated for a self-release Nov. 8 on his label Peanut Dungeon, the record is titled after a lyric from the last track and derives from Orendy's interest in wordplay. "I have always enjoyed the juxtaposition of sweet and dark themes like [...]

It's surely more understatement than hyperbole to suggest that Nick Drake was a man before his time. The Cambridge dropout who found Dylan and dope more engaging than his studies certainly impressed the members of Fairport Convention, who would go on to support his 1969 debut Five Leaves Left in the studio, but he only confused British audiences, who found the chronically depressed insomniac anxious and disengaged, and his ecologically-grounded poetics and organic chorus-less songs completely anathema to the world of sea shanties and traditional brit-folk with which they were familiar. [...]

Note: This has been sitting in my draft posts folder since March so I figure I should post it now or forever hold my words, right? Frankel is pretty doggone good at what they do. The band's classic melodies recall the pop of Simon & Garfunkel and the 1960's filtered through something decidedly more modern. Their sound is stately, wispy, and intimate with a hushed sadness that's reminiscent of the late Elliott Smith. This is true pop a la The Fab Four or (if you're looking for a more modern comparison) some of Brendan Benson's (or [...]

[Birthday greetings to Earlimart/Admiral Radley keyboardist-singer Ariana Murray. Now, on to our steamy agenda for the evening:] It's Week 3 of the Also I Like to Rock series at the Hammer Museum (curated by this very blog), and it's going to get hot. Doors at 7 for KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad, followed by local soul sensations Fitz & the Tantrums [that's Fitz, above] at 8 and the U.K. funk-soul quartet the Heavy at 9. Early arrival recommended. [...]
Warning: You will not find Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, or Grizzly Bear on this list. (Loses 99/100 of potential audience...) Now then. Here are 25 songs that I adored in 2009, in no particular order. Mexican Chili Taco Fiesta - Tamales Oaxaquenos (via KEXP). If you had told me that I would include a mostly instrumental song about Oaxacan tamales, where the only lyrics I can understand are the title words of the song, on my year-end mix, well, I might not have laughed at you, but I [...]

Once again, the big trends in music for the year were completely lost on me. Usually I can easily identify a top album of the year, but this year I struggled. So here's my top 10 list: 1) Phoenix: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix crossed over into the mainstream with the most undeniably catchy record of the year. Three of the best singles of the year ("Lisztomania," "1901," and "Lasso") on one album. Lisztomania - Phoenix 2) The Minor [...]

Music doesn't feel so much like a business to Evan Slamka these days, and the Los Angeles singer-songwriter likes it just fine. With his new quintet Square on Square , Slamka has emerged from three-plus years of personal reflection and creative regeneration that followed the dissolution of Majorie Fair , which released one excellent album ("Self Help Serenade") for Capitol Records before sinking into the major-label abyss. The music on SOS's forthcoming five-song EP, "Spectrum of Love," brims with the same keen melodicism and British Invasion shading as Slamka's previous work, except now everything — from [...]

The Happy Hollows [pictured at the Eagle Rock Music Festival] have signed to Los Angeles-based independent label Autumn Tone Records , which in November will give wider release to the trio's self-birthed debut "Spells." The highly regarded (in Buzz Bands land, anyway) album will be released both digitally and physically, under Autumn Tone's new deal with Red Eye Distribution. For Autumn Tone, the four-year-old imprint founded by Justin Gage (proprietor of the popular blog An Aquarium Drunkard ), the Hollows represent the eighth artist on its increasingly diverse roster, and its fourth from Los Angeles. [...]
LA-based Frankel (real name: Michael Orendy) released his sophomore album, Anonymity is the New Fame, on Autumn Tone Records this year, on September 1st. Not only is the album title great but the record company's name is quite apt for this particular release I think, as it's the perfect album to usher in the Fall. The album is beautiful, calm and enjoyable, in a really understated, quiet way -
Living up to last week's Friday Mixtape was a pretty tall task. But we tried our very best. As always, below you'll find a mix of the week's best new singles, remixes, and covers, along with mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. Enjoy! That's the weakness here: there are no surprises, lyrically or musically. Some well-placed vocal harmonies rise above the musical textures especially in the title track, but fangless feedback and keyboard fills only take up space. Anonymity becomes too familiar, too genre-bound; later songs begin to inhabit a similar tempo and feel, especially once the piano gets replaced by the guitar. There is still a definably Los Angeles sound in this album, and Orendy shows a lot of promise on his sophomore Frankel effort—but he needs to show some bite, too.

If you've followed to the tale of Frankel over the past few years you may have noted that the reclusive bard rarely, if ever, performs live anymore. Frankel's interpretation of Nick Drake's "Know", off the Pink Moon LP, was a highlight of the Frankel solo set (read: without his occasional backing band). Using loops and [...]
[ download ] On September 1st, Los Angeles based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Michael Orendy will release his debut record as Frankel . Orendy recorded Anonymity is the New Fame at his home studio, bringing his piano driven pop compositions to life in a comfortable, familiar environment. That sense of ease translates into Frankel's music, which is imbued with warm tones and a classic approach to melody and structure which harkens back to the sophisticated pop of the late 1960s. The title track from Frankel's debut begins with a rolling [...]
