Frankie Rose's new LP, Interstellar is out in February, and today the Williamsburg scene mainstay offered up the record's first single "Know Me." You'll easily recognize the shoegazey swirl of the guitars from her last effort - the excellent, self-titled Frankie Rose & The Outs - but it's a little more uptempo and peppy. So, if shoegaze suggests an attitude/posture choice where the band resides safely within the shroud of reverb, oblivious to things outside the aura, and straight-up sunniness is represented by a beaming, straight-ahead stare, maybe this is somewhere in [...]

The heroine of this all girl group from New York has been adding her distinctive voice to several other projects through the years but appears to have distilled her experiences with this one. Not that Frankie Rose has departed that radically from what is a familiar guise, namely ravishing white noise twinned with ethereal and near indecipherable vocals. It's a heady mix and one that Slumberland were unable to ignore. The band's eponymous debut appeared in late 2010 and for the most part was greeted with open arms, open ears were a given. KD [...]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =Upy3ZkVEdjQ Bring it back, bring it back, bring it back. Autolux - Transit Transit - [ TBD] Returning to Transit squared several months after its unheralded release, I'm struck by the vast lunar spaces captured by Autolux. The veteran LA art rockers conduct their transportation exercises among nebulae and quasars, capturing a cold world of found and forgotten sounds. Yet rather [...]

Steve Cohen It didn't take a lot of digging to find this San Francisco Chronicle interview circa 2006 wherein Gary Louris definitively closed the book on Minneapolis alt.country heroes The Jayhawks , the band he'd fronted for over 20 years, the first decade with Mark Olson and after his departure, on his own. Of course, by the time he declared The Jayhawks done, he and Olson were again performing together not as The Jayhawks but as those guys from The Jayhawks. So even though the band's principal [...]

Douglas Martin is also an aficionado of the other "Candy." The music videos that are etch themselves into our brains are the ones with the most original ideas. We got goosebumps when the sidewalk lit up under Michael Jackson's feet in "Thriller." The Beastie Boys starring in their very own pulp crime drama kept our attention rapt for every second. And anyone who doesn't consider Missy Elliot rapping in a trash bag one of the greatest music video moments of all-time should probably invest in Lasek Eye Surgery. Sometimes [...]
