Favorite Albums Of 2012 (Alex) After looking my top albums list over, I realize it's much more moody than years past. I think this might be because the majority of the time I listen to music is when I'm inside, and living in Seattle that means it's probably a little misty or cloudy out. If it's bright, shiny and beautiful out, I'm most likely frolicking in the sun and not listening to music that would fit for that type of weather. Or maybe I just liked [...]

Year after year, the ladies in music prove they can hang with the boys, and 2012 was no different. In fact, 2012 was such a big year for the ladies, i'm gonna have to break this into a multiple posts. I tried to narrow it down, but how in the heck am I supposed to decide between the likes of Amanda Palmer, Frankie Rose, Patti Smith, and Sera Cahoone? Exactly. So without further ado, enjoy the first installment of good, from some of the most talented ladies in music. [...]
Here it is. I know you'll hate it; I know you'll disagree, but that's not the point in making an arbitrary list. We here at ATH worked really hard to fit in the tastes of the four of us, and when we decided upon our Top 50, it really boied down to simple math. What albums did we love when they came out? Do we still enjoy spinning those records months later? If they're in the Top 50, then the asnwer is probably yes. I mean, our Top 2 records came out in January, and still play a vital part [...]

#50 to #41 // #40 to #31 // #30 to #21 // #20 to #11 // #10 to #1 ------------------------------ ------------ 40. Caspian - Waking Season Caspain were one of many groups to form in the wake of early '00s post-rock successes like Mogwai, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and EITS, who proved to many aspiring rock groups that indulging in epic songwriting tendencies was neither inaccessible, nor over-indulgent. Not having to find a singer to achieve wide appeal was another plus. Unlike many other admirable [...]

Surfing on Steam’s 20 favorite albums of 2012. Click here to see 11-20. 1. Death Grips - The Money Store Let me start by saying that the act of releasing their second album of 2012 (NO LOVE DEEP WEB) by dropping it for free online then promoting an us vs. them mentality where musicians sign record deals only to try and attempt an obnoxious online breakup is a flat-out embarrassment and publicity failure for Death Grips. And, WTF is a band like Death Grips doing on [...]
During her final tour for her latest album, Interstellar , Frankie and her band performed an excellent set for us in the District. This would be one of her last performances for a while before heading back home for an extended period. Interstellar' s big, synth-pop sound, presented a distinct evolution from her debut album, Frankie Rose & the Outs , and from some of the other projects she's been involved in, like Dum Dums , Vivians, or Crystal Stilts. But as for what's next, that is still up in the air. [...]

It has been seven years that I've been writing this blog. I've narrowed down the usual list from 25 albums to 10 albums, just to make things a little more concise. I was very fortunate to have caught John Talabot twice this year. Once as a solo act at the quaint Larimer Lounge, and the other time opening up for the xx. I don't like making comparisons, but Frank Ocean's album made me feel like I was listening to something of an incantation of Stevie Wonder. Young and extremely talented, and often overlooked by mainstream media (yes, [...]

Frankie Rose's blissful sophomore record is modern dream pop personified. If you don't see this record on year-end lists then you're reading the wrong music sites. My review for Interstellar lives over at Aquarium Drunkard . #4 , #5 , #6 , #7 , #8 , #9 , #10 , #20-11

Having released his debut album, All of Us, Together only a few months ago, Jamison , the man behind British Canadian outfit Teen Daze , is one of many artists continuing an ongoing trend this year: producing a high volume of material. From Ty Segall to Death Grips , serving up multiple albums in the same calendar year is impressive by any standard. Fortunately, this follow-up, inspired by Saint Terisa of Avila's "El Castillo Interior", gives a more pronounced, defined sound, allowing him [...]
