This edition in the Covered With Soul series might be one of the best so far. Here we have covers of songs better known by Free, The Rolling Stones, The Young Rascals, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Bobby Hebb, The Carpenters, Matt Monro, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Bee Gees, The Box Tops, Joe Cocker (covering The Beatles), Gil Scott-Heron, Judy Garland, Frankie Valli, and Nat 'King' Cole. Some of these versions rework the songs so thoroughly, one might imagine they have always been soul songs. Just check out what [...]

Covering or remixing a classic, is, and will always be no small minded feat, so taking onboard 'I Get High (On Your Memory)' by Freda Payne would seem like an impossible challenge. Subtly executed (without mentioning the other hip-hop/rap efforts made previously with this chosen sample), Toronto, Canada's Alex "Kid MK" Tribe has pulled out an honourable and dark-filthy unique remix of this song which doesn't end up making the vocal sample sound like a ruddy chipmunk or time stretching far too slowly! Setting the ground in a superb old skool, low tempo, breaks [...]

I will start off by saying I hope everyone is having a good week so far.I have been thinking about Hypem lately and how I miss them,I miss being listed.I have felt like a lost kid running threw the woods and it just never ends.I know we had are words and everything.I just wish that they would set aside what has happened and let us back in the circle. It feels like we are the loser in high school sometimes.Like I'm just not cool enough for the party. The party being "HypeM".I mean we contribute alot.So why not give us another chance?Anyways [...]

"Ever since you walked right in, the circle's been complete, I've said goodbye to haunted rooms and faces in the street, To the courtyard of the jester which is hidden from the sun, I love you more than ever and I haven't yet begun..." Thanks for that, Bob, could not have said it any better myself. As it happens to be my - umpteenth - wedding anniversary today, here´s a tenpack of songs about that weird phenomenon called marriage. Married man may be a fool, Ry, and granted Tom, I [...]

Freda Payne - "The Road We Didn't Take" Holland-Dozier-Holland's production on this track from 1972 is so great that it's been haunting me ever since I heard it a couple days ago. The recording is so damn seductive, and it's complemented beautifully by the painful, almost pathological introspection of the singer. I suppose Freda Payne is not all that well known these days, but clearly this should be essential listening.

VIEW VIDEO HERE. NON-EMBEDDABLE . The Singer: Released in 1986, Gregory Abbott's "Shake You Down" is softer in tone and more synthesized in sound than other slow jams, but the song helped the genre cross over into adult contemporary radio. Based on a simple 808 drum pattern , some jazzy guitar and what sounds like an electronic melodica, "Shake You Down" glides on its simplicity – that, and Abbott's cloud-bursting falsetto. The Song: Like most R&B singers, Gregory Abbott is a man [...]

"So hey, I've got a shitload of records in the basement. All kinds of genres. I'm looking to sell them in one fell swoop for $250. But for you...I'd let 'em go for $200. Talking like at least 6* boxes of jazz, a few soul, some easy listening, and several boxes of really crappy rock." *6 was later estimated to be 16, but topped out at 24. I honestly didn't need any more records, and definitely not somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,000 of them. I don't want 2,000 of anything, really, except for books, or [...]
There's a Christmas song on here, but it's a really bleak one. In similarly-related news, if you're in the UK, perhaps you might want to buy the new Malcolm Middleton single today? It's really good, actually. If you like the music, you should use some of your hard-earned money to buy it. If you're in Rhode Island, maybe you might want to do that at Tom's Tracks, which is closing after 23 years on Thayer Street. The whole store's half off. 1. Tom Vek, Nothing But Green Lights [...]
