All My Boring Drivel seems a better fit. I haven't suffered through an album this benign in a while. If you're looking for something a little more risque than Family Circus, but not as controversial as a Hallmark original movie, Freddie Stevenson is your man. A visit to Nashville and current habitation in New York seem to have Americanized the Scottish accent and softened the punk bits, but many of the tunes on his April-released ablum All My Strange Companions are catchy and fierce. A few days ago, I was listening to Q on CBC Radio One, and excellent Canadian band The Sadies were one of the musical guests that day. In his introduction of the band, Jian Ghomeshi stated "The Sadies are frequently described by befuddled, or perhaps just word challenged, music critics as 'genre-defying.'" Later, in the post-performance interview with the band, one of The Sadies, when talking about the acquisition of such vague labels, said "And who knows, maybe it's the journalists who are being lazy." His afro haircut may make him look like yet another freak folkie, but his material is too straightforward for that segment. Here in the space of an album, the man referred to as a Scottish folk punk, lays out song after song filled with melodies saturated with feeling.
