Dan Kern V/A The Total Groovy Drag City Buzzcocks founder Pete Shelley has always surprised his public. Just think of the overt craziness of "Orgasm Addict," or the hinted gay innuendoes of "Ever Fallen in Love (with Someone You Shouldn't've)" that exploded later into righteously electronic gay anthems such as the BBC-banned "Homosapien." Yet even I was floored by the revelations on this Drag City box set, which contains the entire catalog of his short-lived, spaced-out noise, late 70s label Groovy Records—even the name hints at a secret life [...]

As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it's creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as Pete Shelley and Groovy Records . When one sees the name Pete Shelley, thoughts quickly turn to pop-punk pioneers, Buzzcocks . But beneath that English [...]

I think I've been suffering from Scandi-fatigue recently. The sheer number of Scandinavian bands that come appended with tags like 'glacial' or 'shimmering' was just getting too much for me. And then along came Simian Ghost - a Swedish band who sound rather more like Wham! than The Knife. 'Free Agent' actually does sound rather a lot like 'Last Christmas' (one of the greatest songs ever written, obviously), but played through a Swedish lakeside sheen. The vocal has a charming waver of the sort that one might expect to hear on a [...]

Sebastian Arnström of Aerial's new project called Simian Ghost set to release mini-album Lovelorn on Heist or Hit Records on November 14, and we get this chilly, amazingly both sparse and tight song called "Free Agent" to lead off. The Swedish act have already shared stages with SBTRKT and Mount Kimbie, so if you need to know reference points of any kind, there you go. (mp3) Simian Ghost - Free Agent Godspeed!

There's a distinct 80s vibe running through the debut UK single from Aerial man Sebastian Arnström's new project. This means it will be like Marmite for most people; and while the new venture is called Simian Ghost , there is absolutely no monkeying around involved. You simply can't argue with 'Free Agent 's ' hook. The song is going to be released as a single in a few weeks (on September 5th to be precise), and is the first material to be [...]

Is there anything sacred left in the world? You think you know a network until they let their greatest announcer walk right out of the door. Gus Johnson, also known as the voice of March Madness, has reportedly cut ties with CBS leaving a gaping hole in the network's sports coverage and appeal. SI.com has learned that CBS Sports recently parted ways with Gus Johnson, a play-by-play mainstay on its college basketball coverage for 16 years, after the two sides could not agree on a new deal. Johnson has also worked [...]

Joell Ortiz Interview by Barbara Bohr When I met Joell Ortiz after the sound check of his Zurich show, he showed some signs of jetlag. He and his manager Michael Herard had just arrived that morning from New York City to start his European solo tour. It was one of the foggy winter days in Zurich that does not really help to overcome a jetlag. He yawned heartily before we sat down in the backstage room. While dead serious at the beginning, he quickly cheered up and got more [...]

Joell Ortiz - Free Agent E1 Entertainment: 2011 On New Year's Day 2010, also known as one of my "It's OK to be hungover" days (right along with el Seis de Mayo), I woke up to one of the most memorable sports stories ever: Gilbert Arenas and Javarris Crittenton of the Washington Wizards pulling guns on each other in the locker room over a gambling debt. While this may sound like a lazy Sunday with my homies, apparently it's a big deal and [...]

The tug o' war saga in New York's standing in Hip-Hop remains a hot button issue for some, while serving as little consequence to others. When they are planted firmly in their element with their historic roots feeding them the proper inspiration matter, they make classics, straight up. On the opposing spectrum, keeping up the more trendy creative processes of making music has the East Coasters lagging in the back of the race, mainly attributed to their more lyrical upholstered raps having to be subdued to churn out a supposed "hit." Yet, very few acknowledge the gray [...]

Most people throw around the term "I bet you..." this or that, when they really don't mean it all. Throughout "Put Some Money On It," the newest reason to preorder Free Agent on Amazon, Brooklyn Joell links up with The Lox to spit reason after ridiculous reason as to why they don't fit in that category. Now, what's the biggest L you've taken on a casual bet? Joell Ortiz Feat. The Lox - "Put Some Money On It"

Being label-less sure as hell ain't impeding Joell. As the Yaowa army grows steadily, his big day is locked in for next Tuesday. 'Til then the faucet keeps dripping. Free Agent is here November 30. Joell Ortiz - "I'm A Beast"

A few months ago, when director Derek Pike was brainstorming up ideas for the video to Joell Ortiz & Novel's everyman anthem, " Night Train ," the former NYU student didn't have to get too elaborate on his storyboard. As visual as the BX Slaughterhouse member spits, the blueprint was right there in the bars. But, a true professional indeed, this Pike fellow takes the alley-oop and manages to further show Joell shares the same light as the fans who love and live his music.

Joell's literally a Free Agent , Tweeting yesterday that he's now off of E1. Right now, the album's still slated to drop though. Download - Joell Ortiz – "Ooh" (Prod. By Large Professor) | Alt. Link Cover swipe via OS
