Many bands would use the opportunity of a light crowd to work on new songs and timing, play it safe and get back on the road quickly. Slim’s was noticeably under-attended Saturday night for Philadelphia-based power pop quintet Free Energy . That’s a bit surprising, since their 2010 debut album, Stuck on Nothing , was produced by LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy, on his DFA label, and since their independent follow-up, 2013’s Love Sign , attracted top-notch reviews coast to coast. When singer Paul Sprangers, guitarists Scott Wells and Sheridan Fox, [...]

Those of you with a night to spare tomorrow would do yourself a favor to check out St Paul Minnesota natives "Free Energy" performing at The Tractor in Seattle. The band's debut studio album released in 2010 and produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem garnered significant critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Spin, and Rolling Stone, who said the band "totally fucking rules." This lead to nearly two years of touring before beginning work on their second album that dropped in early 2013, Love Sign . Love Sign was produced by John Agnello (Social Distortion, [...]
PHAROAHE MONCH, GRAY MATTERS, BAD HABITAT, DESTRO ( Hawthorne Theatre , 1507 SE César E. Chávez) Since cracking open hiphop's cerebellum with the dizzyingly dark, swirlingly complex, and intellectually sizzling Organized Konfusion in the early '90s, New York's Pharoahe Monch has remained many things: poignant, profound, political, punk as fuck, and even, perhaps, a bit picky. Over 20-plus years Monch has released precious little: three records with Organized Konfusion, and three solo outings (and relatively few guest spots). Part of this, it seems, is Monch's desire to complete whole albums rather than chase singles. Monch's LPs establish [...]

This Sunday is our annual Father's Day Kids Dance Party -- with DJ sets from Kid Hops and DJ Rhythma, dancing with the Vicious Puppies crew, crafts and more -- but the kids don't get to have all the fun, as there's plenty of great music in clubs this week. On Monday, Portland's Black Prairie play at the Triple Door. Free Energy rocks the Tractor on Tuesday, while New Orleans indie popsters Generationals play there the next night. Also on Wednesday, a stellar lineup of Eleanor Friedberger , The Bats , and [...]

Photo by Joe Del Tufo | JoeDelTufo.com Philly pop-rock five-piece Free Energy took the stage at maybe not the most opportune moment during Non-COMM. The Lone Bellow had just wrapped up a tremendous set upstairs, and much of the industry crowd was still smoozing with that band; others had skipped the festival entirely to catch their flight home. So to put it politely, there was plenty of room to dance in World Cafe Live's downstairs when they opened their set with "Electric Fever." But true to the slogan on his t-shirt, attitude was everything [...]

DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince said summer was time to sit back and unwind . Lyte Funky Ones thought it was fly when girls stopped by for the summer. Craig Finn's perfect summer involved drinking on top of water towers . However you spend the most effervescent of seasons though, you'll want a mix of sun-soaked indie bangers to soundtrack your summer memories. So we've taken The Hold Steady's advice and built something this summer, and it's the 4th volume of our Summer (Or What It Sounds Like) Mix. Click [...]

The aptly named Free Energy is bringing their guitar-driven power pop to the North Star Bar tonight. With upbeat rock that makes you want to groove, the band has toured with the likes of Mates of State and Weezer, now in support their latest LP Love Sign , which was released earlier this year via the group's own label. There's something about Free Energy's carefree lyrics and punchy guitar riffs that make the music so much fun and perfect for this gorgeous weather. It doesn't hurt that they know the cure for rock 'n' roll fever is [...]

![[SHOW REVIEW] First Avenue Presents Free Energy @ Triple Rock Social Club](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4922231_lg.jpg)
After getting turned down at the door for Free Energy's previous show at the Turf Club , my need to see the Philly rockers was at an all time high. It ranked up there with Mondays and mandatory overtime as worst moments of 2013 thus far. This time around tickets were not an issue, rocking out as hard as humanly possible was my only concern. And rocking out is what we did. Free Energy used to be frequenters of 400 Bar until its recent closing (thank god) and since I last saw them there [...]

What better way to start off the ongoing week than with a little more cowbell. And who better to serve up that platter of oh so delicious cowbell and old school guitar riffs than Philly native power pop rockers Free Energy . The new track "Love Sign" was the b-side to the band's limited edition vinyl that was released this past Record Store Day coupled with the single " Wild Life ". So for those of us who weren't fortunate enough to get our hands on that vinyl, there's good news for us. Both tracks [...]

Free Energy 's music will always remind me of the carefree summer of 2010, so I'm glad to see they haven't deviated from their enthusiastic pop music that soundtracked an entire summer. Their new album, Love Sign , is perfect for all of those drives with the windows down. This is an especially catchy one.

I've ben trying to figure out just what it is that makes me go so ga-ga over Free Energy , and I think it's the purity of their music. It's super catchy and super life affirming but at the root it's coming from a very real place. It's honest. It's not putting on airs. It's not trying to impress; this music only wants to make you feel , in the best possible way. They're playing Lincoln Hall tonight , and you can bet I'll be there. The funny thing is, for them being one of [...]

Below is a previously unreleased B-side from Free Energy called "Love Sign." The band is beginning their tour this evening in Chicago, and will be joining The Darkness and Deap Vally later on down the road. They'll be performing next in Philly on Saturday, May 4 at the North Star Bar.

Below, listen to a B-Side, "Love Sign," by Free Energy . The band plays North Star Bar on Saturday, May 4th and are also going out on the road with The Darkness . Free Energy performed at WXPN's Free At Noon on February 8th; listen to the show here .
Spring music in the past has been different for me. I always wanted something to evoke the riotous bloom of flowers, the world opening its clenched palms toward the jolly sun. The rain splattering on thirsty ground, and on the wet shins of kids running around in the park for the first time since [...]
