Nothing did more to further the cause of Alternative Nation-building than 120 Minutes, MTV's Sunday-night video showcase of non-mainstream acts. For nearly two decades, the program spanned musical eras from '80s college rock to '00s indie, with grunge, Britpop, punk, industrial, electronica and more in between. MAGNET raids the vaults to resurrect our 120 favorite and unjustly forgotten [...]
Hey, it's me Jon. Back for some insightful commentary on popular music. JK JK LOL!! I'm actually here with another thinly veiled excuse for rambling nonsense and forced humor. Today's list is about songs that have the same title (not to be confused with cover songs). For no reason in particular, I have decided to give myself bonus points for selecting songs with maxim musical disparity. Read on if you dare. 5. Welcome to the Jungle - [...]
Always one of the more low-key and eclectic outdoor festivals of the year, this year's Concrete and Grass festival in Mears Park will feature a solo acoustic performance by Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner,

For the past year and a half, I've been hanging out with some of my friends about once a month to record a podcast called the Radio Free Song Club. I'm there as a photographer, but the others assembled are songwriters, musicians, sound engineers and visiting guests. It's hosted by Nick Hill (formerly of the Music Faucet on WFMU) and singer-songwriter Kate Jacobs. Dave Schramm is the bandleader, and is joined by a semi-rotating band known as The Radio Free All Stars, which includes David Mansfield, JD Foster, Jeremy Chatzky, Paul Wieselman, Andy Burton, Paul Moschella, Ted Reichman, [...]

Last month Death Cab For Cutie returned to the spotlight with "You Are A Tourist," the great first single and video from their forthcoming Codes And Keys . A sunny addition to our spring playlist, it recalls brighter moments of mid-period Cure when it's not channeling "Float On." That's fitting given how Ben Gibbard's got five Cure covers in his live repertoire. In fact I can't remember ever seeing seeing the guy perform without hearing some other band's song in the set. So before we gear up to collectively prematurely evaluate Codes , here's a listen back at [...]

So, I've been on a Freedy Johnston kick for a while now. In particular, his 1994 album, This Perfect World , has found its way back into my regular rotation. If you're unfamiliar with Freedy, he's the songwriter behind such bittersweet '90s gems as "Bad Reputation" , "The Lucky One" and "This Perfect World." Some might argue that Johnston is one of the most under-appreciated songwriters of his generation. Johnston's songs are often dark, evocative stories nestled neatly into short packages of lovely folk-pop. [...]
trying to tell you i dont know off can you fly
Sunday morning, woke up early, 6:30 am with a song playing in my head and looking at the clock with wonder and disdain. Why is it that I can go to bed at midnight on a Saturday night and be wide awake early Sunday morning? If I tried to pull that shit on a Tuesday, I'd wake up a grumpy mofo. Anyway, the song was " Underwater Life " by Freedy Johnston. This is a guy I've sort of followed since '94, when the incredible "This Perfect World" cd came out, and "Bad Reputation" [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News A subtle humbleness permeated the evening at Freedy Johnston 's gig at Southpaw in Brooklyn, New York Saturday night. Perhaps it's his Midwestern roots, or the fact that the audience had braved the cold, drizzle-infused spring air to see the show, but there was also something deeper and more profound at work: Freedy Johnston is damn good at what he does. He's one of those performers whose live shows surpass his recordings. There's an emotional energy -- an honest intimacy -- that he achieves [...]

Are you like me, just combing the pesky internets all day, everyday searching for a shred, a morsel, of yummy Hanson news? JACKPOT!

Filed under: Concerts and Tours Rolling Stone named Freedy Johnston their 1994 songwriter of the year following the release of his major label debut 'This Perfect World.' Oddly enough, it was that very same publication, along with a radio station that came in only on clear nights, that fed Freedy's small-town childhood dreams of one day being a musician. Eventually Johnston bought a guitar through mail order, moved to a bigger college town, caught up on popular music, and started writing his own songs. Now he's a 20-year veteran, [...]

* Freddy Johnston-Don´t Fall In Love With A Lonely Girl

Freedy Johnston's new album Rain In The City is a meandering melodic collection of songs firmly grounded in pop but engrained with clever stylistic twists and turns - watch and listen to a selection of tracks on the widget below, check out my pal over at High Noon Saloon who has written a great review of the album. photo by michael carmody as far as im concerned, freedy johnston's 92 release, can you fly , is one of the finest records ever released/recorded. its one of the most personal records ive ever heard which is due in large part to the fact that johnston sold off his family farm which he inherited from his grandfather in order to finance the record. his loss, is our gain i suppose, cause again its a truly remarkable record. well, he's got a new one out entitled rain on the city - [...]
