In our interview with Jay Sweet, producer of the Newport Folk Festival with extraordinarily awesome music taste, he mentioned a lot of bands. A whole butt ton of bands. So, being the curious people we are, we set out to listen to all of the artists he mentioned. Turns out, apart from creating an amazing playlist of folk artists they also trace the history and evolution of Newport Folk Festival . ![NEWPORT FOLK FEST GUIDE [FESTIVAL]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3599784_lg.jpg)
In an effort to have the best summer ever, pretty much all of us from The Wild Honey Pie will be piling into a car and going to one of the world's most important and notoriously awesome festivals - Newport Folk Festival . Given that the event is curated so flawlessly, the choices we will be forced to make during that time will be epically tough. To make your life (and ours) a bit easier, we've gone through the lineup and highlighted our favorites. The What Cheer? Brigade [...]

I don't get to see my Sister very often because we live on opposite sides of the country from eachother. She came to visit me this past weekend and forgot a couple of cd's in my car when she left. Even though Montreal is a lot better known for it's music scene than Jasper, we still seem to have very similar taste in tunes. Here is the first one I popped into the ole stereo and have been listening to for the past 3 days. Reminds me of summer. Stay tuned for the second cd... 1. [...]

We're back with another episode of our 'Honey I'm Home' live session series. With each new episode, we welcome a different band into our home studio and record an intimate version of three songs. This time around, we had Queens natives Freelance Whales come by and set up shop in the bedroom. Of course, we didn't just have them stand there and sing. We strung up Edison light bulbs, moved all of our recording equipment into the room, and documented the time we spent with the band. Having the opportunity [...]

Welcome to another edition of Mellow Mondays! Sorry for the late post, I expected to do next to nothing at work today, but I was actually pretty swamped all day. The theme of today's post is this: how many songs into this post will TeeFizz's head explode due to the lack of heavy bass, the predominant use of guitars, and, wait for it, even a song by his favorite rapper at the moment, Big Sean? Seeing as how I'm the one putting the post together, I say he lasts all the way til the glorious end with a Bonus Song [...]

♫ "Dangerous is the Sound" - Kindlewood "quiet your voice..." ♫ "Starring" - Freelance Whales "in a stranger's nightmare..." ♫ "First Snow (Ooah Remix)" - Emancipator "it's cold..." ♫ "Can't You Tell" - Vetiver "stay on track..." ♫ "Lose It" - Austra "don't wanna [...]

If Freelance Whales were a coffee, they would undoubtedly be a blend. Their sound tastily combines the aged, nostalgic warmth of folk with the smooth sweetness of pop. It's relaxing, yet it's energetic. It's ethereal, yet it's urban. It's conventional, yet it's cool. South American coffee growers can harvest their crop to it and Starbucks customers can receive their warm espressos to it. In case you didn't already know, Starbucks did in fact use their song, "Generator ^ First Floor" in a television commercial , so there is some truth to that last [...]

Oh, Bonnaroo . You do it to us every time. Year by year, over 80,000 people make the pilgrimage to a field in the middle of nowhere, Tennessee to camp for four days in the blistering heat with little to no refuge and more dust than anyone should be able to handle. That sounds kinda miserable, right? How then, you might ask, did Bonnaroo make it to this, their 10th year? I think that can be summed up in their newfound theme song, by the Del McCoury Band and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, "Bonnaroo (Feel the Magic)". [...]
So with this years Bonnaroo Music Festival set to kick off on Thursday, I thought I would give a little preview of some of the bands who are going to be there. But instead of posting songs by some of the bigger acts who are set to perform this year, I found not as well known group by the name of Aunt Martha who have put out a number of covers from other performers at the festival so I thought I

Click image to download full album Song: Freelance Whales - Starring "Freelance Whales - Starring" What's so good? Every now and then a song comes along that completely wins you over to a band's camp. Freelance Whales did that a couple times with their release of Weathervanes in April of 2010, but the best song by far was (in my opinion) "Starring." More than a year since that release, this song still does it for me. [...]

How much do I love Freelance Whales ? A lot. This latest track is a cover of a 19802s Devo tune, Girl U Want . This cover version definitely has its own sound compared to the original , which wouldn't find itself in a Sunday Supplement slot in a hundred years!
Watch and download knockout covers of the Black Keys, Freelance Whales, Wanda Jackson, Lil Wayne, Fences, and six more!
Is your supply of remixes running low? Well... Good news! We've got two stand-alone, great artists coming together today (whether they agreed to the union or not). It's a gentle, friendly remix that won't have you struggling to hear the original song, but also doesn't rely too heavily on it. It's Freelance Whales' "Hannah" remixed by Ra Ra Riot, who, if you listen to this remix, are recognizably

Boy, this one was a long time coming. Either you are all quite patient or you didn't notice. Either way I have been busy as heck which just means that all the tracks I had compiled got whittled down to just the gems. Rock. The 'Cuse bred Ra Ra Riot take Freelance Whales' "Hannah," from last year's remarkable Weathervines, and infuse a synthed out, electro-pop flair . This rework sounds quite similar to the work of Discovery (Ra Ra Riot frontman Wes Miles' side project with Vampire Weekend producer Rostam Batmanglig) -- "This is due to the conspicuous similarities in swivelling synthesizers, fun electro-pop flavour and the overall production," as noted by PMA . This track is from an 8-track Benefit For Japan EP outta Freelance Whales -- Get your hands on it [...]
