We introduced the break out band, Freelance Whales, with their powerful hits, "Generators ^ First Floor" and "Generators ^ Second Floor." Continuing on the excitement train, the song "Starring" further demonstrates the strength of the band, making you forget they came to being in December of 2008 (yes, less than a year ago). "Starring" is a stand-out track on their new album, Weathervanes (released in August). With a heartfelt pop chorus, the track leaves you feelings lifted and free. The song makes you want to throw on lose fitting clothes and run through a field, skipping [...]

Buy: iTunes | CD Baby Freelance Whales - Weathervanes [Released 9/1, 2009] Record Label: None/ Indepedent Formed in late 2008, Freelance Whales , a band from Queens, is leaping onto the music scene with an undeniable presence. A few months ago [...]

"Hannah" is yet another track off the Freelance Whales' debut album, Weathervanes , which we've listening to non-stop here @ PMA for a couple weeks now. While previously posted tracks have featured quiet but epic instrumentation, "Hannah" comes out loud, with strong beeps and blips that make the Whales sound more like a Postal Service wannabe than the next big thing. But once lead singer Judah Dadone croons "and if you're partial to the night sky," the electronics fade away, and the beautiful harmonies of the Freelance Whales kick in, we're in for another treat [...]

Photography by Me! Hooray! TSURUFOTO now on Etsy Modeling by Sam Hey! Guess what!?! It's finally what?? (say it with me now) IT'S FINALLY FUCKING FRIDAY!!! Not just a Woot, but I'm thinkin' a WOOT Squared is in order, donchathink?! [...]

I discovered Freelance Whales over the weekend, and I have been obsessing over their debut album ever since. I noticed that they were getting some good hype from Stereogum , but I didn't look into them simply because I am pretty lazy right now. It took some other bloggers to push my lazy ass to get started on this wonderful band. A thank you to Lindsay and Luis for this! A "band to watch" post is on the way (but i got a test in 4 hours), but for now enjoy "Generator ^ [...]

Catchy is a word often used dismissively, as if artists have to sacrifice integrity to make an accessible product. Weathervanes flies in the face of that notion, downright addictive despite being full of intimate and personal songs. With a flair for captivating folk pop, Freelance Whales are a legitimate treat. PMA has already introduced you to Freelance Whales with the epic "Generator" songs (mirroring Arcade Fire's "Neighborhood" series, perhaps?). Continuing to hype up this melodic, orchestral band, we present you with "Location," another dreamy cut of of their debut album, Weathervanes . While not quite as powerful as the two "Generator" tracks, "Location" features more of the same in the best way possible- banjo, soothing harmonies (resembling One For The Team), and a quiet, memorable chorus powered with a gospel backdrop of "ohs." And at 4:05, the full potential of Freelance Whales is reached as [...]
Wuu. Pretty wild weekend. Full of highs and lows. Writes and wrongs. Come to think of it, the nadir and zenith of my weekend just occurred. Broke another toothbrush. Snapped. In my mouth. Again. Good way to get a momentary feeling of being a chump. Thankfully, a new toothbrush was on hand. Really can't beat that new [...]

From Queens, New York comes Freelance Whales , a young band, even in blogospherical terms. The band formed in late 2008 and has since crafted wonderful, arresting pop songs. Biovular twins, "Generator ^ First Floor" and "Generator ^ Second Floor" come from a place of freedom. A place where 5 friends can make music with any instrument possible. Freelance Whales favor the harmonium, banjo, glockenspiel, synthesizers, guitars, bass, drums and waterphone. Freelance Whales rode in with high energy and released their full length debut, Weathervanes , in late August 2009. [...]

This segment has been on hiatus for a while now, but with my recent discovery of Freelance Whales , it is back. Freelance Whales is very young when it comes to bands having formed just about a year ago. The five-piece band from Brooklyn has made it a point to use whatever instrument they stumble upon in their compositions — from harmoniums to waterphones — and they have done so with great success. Once they built up their repertoire, which later became their debut LP, [...]

Freelance Whales - Generator First Floor Mysig folkpop från New York. Låten finns på bandets platta Weathervanes .

The past week for me has been relatively shite. From managing to get an infected toe at the start of the week and disgusting everyone within my vicinity at work with my grim foot tales; to getting the worst food poisoning I've ever had after eating the tuna sandwich sent direct from hell; to missing a trip to Scotland with Biffy Clyro due to the persistent vomiting; and finally missing out on Oh, Inverted World's awesome night at Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen with Gaggle , Clock Opera , So Say So and [...]

Hope you enjoyed our last post all about those great Shoes remixes ? For today we are enjoying a return to the indie shores of Recommender-land. A familiar and rather brilliant place, with three gorgeous pointers for you to enjoy. FREELANCE WHALES New York is pumping out so much great music at the moment, but to be fair to this beloved city we aren't sure it's conveyor belt ever stopped?! The next band that plonked onto our playlists come from the [...]
Weekend Mix #3.zip More great music this week and another solid mix. Freelance Whales - Generator ^ Second Floor Great song. Great album. I'm sure bands hate when they're compared to others but… (Death Cab for Cutie + The Format) + Banjo = Freelance Whales

Arrrrgh. Buying your first home is stressful. Seriously, my brain is fried from anxiety, my body worn from lack of sleep, and spirit is dizzy from the rollercoaster ride that has been this week. After finding the perfect place on the first try, submitting a bid and winning a blind auction for said place, I'm still waiting to hear whether a last-minute cock-up with the bank is going to lose it for me. So, fogive me if the mixtape is light, lacking, or if I missed your email about your band this week. My mind is otherwise occupied. [...]
