It's been two years since I saw Freelance Whales in Frenchkiss' 2010 SXSW showcase. Under a white tent with a few of us ready to listen, they began their layered serenades, and the crowd began to grow. Rumors buzzed about them, and they fulfilled every expectation. Since their 2010 release Weathervanes , we've waited patiently for the next addition. And finally, the buzz. The band's sophomore effort Diluvia is expected October 9, and Spitting Image is the first glimpse we have. The song is characteristic of Freelance Whales' collection of delicate harmonies and [...]

Diluvian's songs practically glow with multi-part vocal harmonies, banjos, strings, horns and other mad manmade clatter. Even the synthesizers sound warm, loose and light. Freelance Whales' new album, Diluvia, comes out Oct. 9. Read more »

New York indie/pop band Freelance Whales released a new tune called "Dig Into Waves," which I already adore. With this new single there is a lot more pop elements to it then their previous tunes, but it is a positive transition. Stream the new single below and get the album on October 9th via Mom+Pop/Frenchkiss . Fresh? [...]

Little Daylight, the mysterious dream pop remix darlings, have a catalog that could be listened to in its entirety in a bit under a half hour. While this could initially appear to belie laziness, the real reason becomes quickly apparent: all the tracks are damn good. This time around, Little Daylight drops a remix of Freelance Whales ' "Spitting Image," giving the indie rock track an airier feel. Give the track a listen below.
Little Daylight, everyone's favorite dream-poppy remixers (and whose identities remain a mystery), have just released another one of their highly-sought after tracks. This time it's Queens indie-rockers Freelance Whales who get the Little Daylight treatment on the track "Spitting Image" , off of their most recent album Diluvia which was released with New York based Mom + Pop Records earlier this year. Also - we still don't know who Little Daylight is. It's just so intriguing, isn't it? What if Little Daylight is your dad? Is that possible? Have you asked him? [...]

Diluvia , the second release from Queens, NY band Freelance Whales, is the grand culmination of their trademark folk rock and recent experimentation with electronics and pulsating rhythms. Their debut was notable for its dreamy atmospherics, nostalgia and reliance on the banjo; with “Diluvia” producer Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend, Sleigh Bells, Cults) helps the band navigate an edgy indie vibe as well as some cosmic existential ideas. The title itself is an apt, if not crowded analogy, as Diluvia is the flotsam and jetsam caused by Freelance Whales’ flood of fantastical imaginings, specifically their musings on [...]
Freelance Whales - Sophomore album from New York's supremely esoteric and whip smart indie art-pop band is even more adventurous than their boldly thematic debut Weathervanes , an album we chose as one of the best of 2010...frontman/songwriter Judah Dadone remains the main creative force but the new songs indicate a dramatic shift toward a real "group think" mentality in arranging...Shane Stoneback (Vampire Weekend) produced and engineered // Release : Diluvia (October 9, Mom & Pop/French Kiss) // Sounds like : anyone wondering whatever became of "progressive" [...]

Freelance Whales could be described as one of the more "easy listening" bands produced by the NYC scene in the new millennium. Still, their complex and inventive sound is a perfect example of what makes the NYC scene so special, i.e. a concentration of musicians who are here to push the creative envelope. After a first album that gave them international fame in 2008, the Whales are announcing a new full length for the fall, entitled "Diluvia". The band is also going on a US tour in October, and will return to NYC on November 1st for a [...]
