Somehow, I missed the fact that NYC's French Kicks released their follow-up to 2006's Two Thousand all the way back in May. Unfortunately, that means the buzz it created was somewhere between a whisper and a cough, a sad fact because I really dig the hell out of it. "So Far We Are" was my #17 track of 2006, a hook-filled number with one of the most likeable drum parts in recent memory. But it seems no one can mention them without mentioning the Walkmen, a band I've never been able to get into [...]

In the midst of Rolling Stone features, touring with Tapes 'n Tapes , and hitting the festival circuit , its been a while since White Denim has played an Austin show. What better homecoming than a full night of Austin’s best music at the Mohawk ? We’ve already mentioned Brazos , as one of the best new (more like re-newed) bands out now, with their all-star band members and [...]
[INSERT EVOCATIVE IMAGE HERE] Well, the French Kicks played mostly songs from their new album last night. Coincidentally, their new album sucks pretty hard! That review sort of hangs itself by comparing it to old REM and U2 albums (which are boring). Basically, whatever seemed bland and mundane on their first three albums (half the songs) was increased to take over the show. While Two Thousand played to their strengths, Swimming did the opposite. We spent some time away from the [...]

So, is writing like Tucker Max an easy way to make money? Sometimes when I got bored in high school I used to talk like that to the table of WoW-playing nerds I sat with since I was a lonely boy that liked the Decemberists too much and not Dave Matthews. I didn't even get laid and I could talk like a know-it-all asshole! Basically, I bossed around the only people in school worse with women than I was. The weird part? They kind of liked it. A few weeks [...]

The French Kicks played to a packed house with Frightened Rabbit and The Lovely Sparrows at the Mohawk in June. They put their first EP out in 1999- and have become seasoned pros at wooing a crowd. Led by the Stumpf brothers, Nick (the tallest man alive) and Lawrence make up the heart of the four some. Their newest release, Swimming ; is out now. Check it: The French Kick live from the Mohawk: Carried Away / Trial of the Century / Over the World

On June 5, Frightened Rabbit played a packed house at the Mohawk with the French Kicks and Zykos . I won't say they were THE act of the show- but I won't not say it either. These Scots put on one amazing show, and I'm sure 400 or so patrons might agree. Check it: Frightened Rabbit live from the Mohawk: I Feel Better ♥ The Greys ♥ Fast Blood ♥ The Modern Leper Completely, Absolutely, Unrelated goodness: Pink [...]

Oh, hello. Here's a list of songs I'm currently listening to overandoverandoverandover. Some are old, some are new, some aren't even officially "out" yet. Listen to them with a solid pair of headphones - not earbuds! Why not try the sparkling pair above? - they're better that way. Sort of like hot dogs are always better at baseball games, popcorn is always better at movies (even when it costs half your paycheck), and coffee is better... oh wait, coffee's always good. Listen away, friends: French Kicks, "Abandon" from [...]

There are great bands (eg. Spoon ), there are bands that make you feel great to exist ( Wolf Parade ), there are bands that get far too much publicity ( The Vines ). Then there are bands that continually fly under the radar. Minus Story would be one, Aloha would be another. French Kicks are certainly one, and I think it should stop. Now. Their fourth album "Swimming" is a pure pleasure, it's layer after layer of shimmering pop. It's not music to change your life but it will make your life [...]
It's hard to fight the hipster urge. Plus, half the bands I've picked have actually been brought up by other members of the Stranger Dance so I figure it's ok to break out the Ray Bans and go for a ride on my fixed gear. Warning: highly addictive mp3s ahead... MP3s: It Hugs Back - Other Cars Go Hot Chip - The Warning Deerhoof - Spirit Ditties of No Tone The Dodos - Fools [...]

It's been awhile since I checked in with the French Kicks. I loved their first EP on Startime, Young Lawyer , especially the two amazing closing tracks, "Destro" and "Piano". A few albums and lineup changes later, what are they up to now? Similar things, just less piano-y and more lounge-y! Their new album, Swimming was released on May 20th. Perhaps nothing epitomizes the Wonderland-like quality of the Japanese recession like the giant orange Hermes box in the heart of Ginza, Tokyo's most exclusive shopping district. For Hermes International, the building-sized box, complete with signature orange packaging and brown "ribbon," is not merely a marketing tool but a reflection of the company's confidence that even in bad times, there will be plenty of Japanese willing to pay hundreds of thousand of yen for one of its handbags. Such confidence is hardly misplaced. Sure, unemployment is at record levels, corporate earnings are sinking, bankruptcies are at a [...]
Photo by Boris Karn!! Okay, So, I didn't think I would be looking forward to summer at all since I haven't experienced winte r in over a year and a half, but spring here is fricken cold enough! And now that summer is approaching it is time for a summer playlist. Now, most of these songs are songs I have listened to [...]
I held this aside for the fireworks I was expecting from the French when they took on Romania the other night at Euro 2008. Big snore ensued. That game aside it has been a terrific competition and even when the quality has dipped the effort has been heartening. Thankfully it seems that today’s rich footballers still give some currency to national pride. These French Kicks are based in Brooklyn

Brooklyn band French Kicks are in town tomorrow night at the Mohawk. The band's latest release, Swimming , their fourth, was produced and mixed entirely by the band and offers up a more melodic and "live" feel than their previous releases, especially when compared to 2002's One Time Bells and 2004's The Trial of the Century . The band emerged in the New York music scene around the same time as Interpol, the Strokes, and the Walkmen, and while they didn't garner as much critical and mainstream praise as immediately as the others, their [...]
This week, we again sent Observer interns Daniel Rodrigue and Spencer Campbell out onto the streets armed with a cheap-ass walkman and a copy of a song from a band coming through town. The song in tow for this go-round was the French Kicks ' "Abandon," and the dynamic intern duo found themselves a willing and impressively insightful barista in Mason Weaver out in front of Whole Foods' Lower Greenville location. As a result of their find, this installment's a little different--we liked Weaver's take so much, we let him have the full-length [...]
