The band behind one of my favorite releases of the year, The Midnight Organ Fight, is set to play the Mohawk this coming Thursday. The band I speak of is Selkirk, Scotland's Frightened Rabbit. The trembling Leporidaes were last spotted by yours truly playing some exceptional shows during SXSW. While their recorded music takes pains to show some restraint, their live show really allows the songs to breath and quiver a bit. I really can't recommend the show more. Also be sure to stick around to check out New York's French Kicks who [...]

New York quartet French Kicks get better from each album to the next. They released their first record in 2002 and subsequently have released a new record every two years. 2006's Two Thousand is a riveting rock record, but it's this year's Swimming where the band hits its zenith on a light and breezy, woozy album perfect for summer listening. Download: French Kicks - "Carried Away" The group sometimes sounds akin to the [...]

It's Drake , a week late, more or less. This time, it's my fault (blame the holiday). Personally, I would have made a bigger mention of the new Ting Tings record, which I like quite a lot. I've heard good things about the new Wedding Present record, but not actually heard it myself. Whereas, I've also heard bad things about the new Donna Summer album, but ditto on the not hearing it for myself. -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 05.20.08 Another week, [...]

There are things I like about the Echo and things I don't like. I like that it is tiny, which allows a degree of intimacy with the performers that is not possible in bigger venues. My big peeve is the lighting, which is best described as primitive. If the band members don't stand in certain areas of the stage, they are in the dark. The air circulation is not up to the challenge when the place is full, as it was last Thursday for the French Kicks. And I've never heard any band sound good in [...]

Lots of veteran indie bands have new records out this week. Other than that, some people seem to be excited about the new Islands record. A lbums Released on 5/20/08: Records I've Heard: Scarlett Johansson : Anywhere I Lay My Head (Atco) – I first got a mini-crush on Johansson back in 2002 when she appeared in Ghost World. It's the easiest thing in the world [...]

Swimming was released digitally back on April 1st and this week is out on the shelves. The album was recorded in December 2007 and January 2008 in New York. Produced and mixed by the band, the album features 12 brand new songs. Josh Wise (guitarist/vocalist): "On this record, we hoped to capture the joy of friends playing together in a relaxed way. We used a lot of first and second takes and tried to preserve a sense of immediacy and discovery that comes from putting things down before you really have a chance [...]

The Graboid is back once again this week, and thankfully, on it's regularly scheduled day of the week. Lots of great albums this week including new releases from The Wedding Present , Mates of State , French Kicks , and Islands . I checked out a few tracks from Scarlett Johansson's much publicized album of Tom Waits covers, and damn...this is not good at all. Not that i've been hearing a lot of good press in regards to it in the first place, but I still wanted to see [...]

Here are a few of this week's new releases that The Wheel's Still In Spin highly recommends: Bonnie "Prince" Billy – Lie Down In The Light | Amazon CD LP MP3 | Insound CD MP3 This Will Oldham album returns to an upbeat country sound, reminiscent of Master & Everyone . April was the best month for music thus far this year, although the months to come hold much in store, particularly with Death Cab For Cutie's Narrow Stairs album hitting stores on May 13th. This month we were able to get lots of sneak peeks at the album, especially with the release of their Daytrotter Sessions , which we were able to hear "Talking Bird" and "Cath...". My favorite song this month has to be Angel Pier's "Sacrifice", and although [...]
