Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255) Our recent Regional Bias fundraiser concert featured the final local performance by Royal Baths before the band relocates to the East Coast, a fact that got us thinking about the many active artists who have left the Bay Area for other pastures in recent years. As an organization founded to champion local music, we focus on bands while they live here, but there's always a lingering feeling that great bands that [...]

Ooooh ... French Miami ... so jammy ... so progressive ... so lovely ... Brooklyn via San Fran trio is all sorts of spacey ... check out their upcoming EP 'Motor Skills ... from the PR: "Motor Skills" synthesizes the bands signature tightly-wound math-rock with prog/kraut-inspired electronics, and anthemic post-punk hooks ... oh, word? French [...]

Women are one of those bands that you'll never be able to figure out. This is meant in the best way possible. With stark vocals and moody instrumentation, their newest album "Public Strain" creates an atmosphere that makes you uncomfortably yearning for more. It will be interesting to see how this translates live. The living room atmosphere of the Hemlock Tavern will present a chance to see this band so close that if you're ears aren't bleeding by the end of it, you're just not doing it right. Download Immediately: Women - "Eyesore" [...]
A new song from the upcoming EP of French Miami, the Brooklyn-based sort-of-mathy-rock kids who we love almost too much for their tropical post punk, "Older" is now up for streaming via Soundcloud. The EP it's off, Motor Skills, hits via the on Death By Audio imprint on November 16. Get ready for some exceptionally [...]

The local, show listings-based Epicsauce.com has announced a new indie show series in the Upper Haight. This series will take place on Thursdays (starting this Thursday, 3/11) at a new venue called Milk , which has taken over the previous Club Boomerang space, located at 1840 Haight St. (across from Amoeba Records). Considering there isn't much in the way of indie rock venues over in that section of town, this should prove to be an interesting (and welcome) experiment. French Miami - "Science Fiction" The first rendition [...]

by trudy The whirlwind of CMJ week has finally drawn to a close and we're happy to report that QC's Anti-CMJ Showcase at Market Hotel was a huge success. The loaded bill featured five bands and was highlighted by high energy and innovative performances by UUVVWWZ and Sleigh Bells . Roughly 160 people passed through Market for the fiesta including a guest appearance by M.I.A. To top it off, Pitchfork said the night's closing Sleigh Bells set "just might be the best thing [...]
It is Fall in the Bay Area, and like most other places on the West coast, that means it gets dark earlier in the evenings, stays dark longer in the mornings, and we are already seeing some monsoon-like rains that will be more and more frequent in the coming months. And although there is nothing wrong with throwing on The Morning Benders' excellent Bedroom Covers album or the Papercuts' fantastic You Can Have What You Want and pulling out a bottle of red wine and choosing to accept and deal with the weather (great albums for [...]
