[ Flash 10 is required to watch video.] New Orleans, Louisiana. Bourbon Steeet, French Quarter.
Saturday around midnight, locals the Fine Hoods were playing the second floor of the Firehouse, when two, three, and then five KCPD radio cars pulled up outside. The Fine Hoods kept on playing their galvanizing version of new-wave.… [ Read more ] [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

Here's one of my AZ favorites, Stephen Steinbrink and French Quarter . I'd previously seen French Quarter at Rhinoceropolis , but it was nice to see the band playing on their home turf. Most of Stephen's output is available for purchase from Life's Blood and Gilgongo . Didn't really have a "structured" post today, so I thought I would troll the library over at IODA and get you some tunes - some are new, some are relatively new and one is just a classic (for me). Without additional reading required, find: ~~~ Nina Nastasia "You're a Holy Man" (mp3) from "Outlaster" (Fat Cat Records) More On This [...]
Mountain Man Records is a Long Beach-based label that has a growing roster of stellar independent artists. My particular affection for all LBC music continues to likewise, grow, with a few good finds from their collective including Brown&Blue and French Quarter , which I'm delighted to share with you all. Brown&Blue Brown&Blue is a Long Beach band that plays 'dad rock' music, although I'm not sure my dad is cool enough for this. Their latest album 'Second Chances' is an decidedly unpolished rock album that reminds me of radio songs [...]

So a lawyer, a stockbroker, and a fuck up (me) go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras….

I just found out about Stephen Steinbrink who is the main songwriter in French Quarter like 15 minutes ago and this amazing song that you can find on their myspace was my inspiration. The song " A Set of Hours" is off an album called You Are Dead set to be released on Gilgongo Records . Especially recommended if you like Woods. Stephen Steinbrink - A Set Of Hours
You may have noticed, the Stupor Bowl went down yesterday. I heard it suggested that they move the game to Saturday, allowing America a day to recover before trudging back to work. My brain, liver and intestines would like to publicly endorse this idea. Wings n' beer are not just for breakfast anymore, but that doesn't mean you won't regret overconsuming them the next day. I now realize the error of my ways yesterday and hope to make smarter, safer decisions in the future. Here are some other thoughts I had throughout the day. [...]
Create a playlist at MixPod.com The winners of this year's T BREAK heats have been announced, thereby giving 16 unsigned acts the chance to fulfil their dreams of playing at T in the Park , although they don't get the 'special' passes that allow them to mingle with the proper stars backstage. To enter into the spirit of turning music into a competition, we've made up a playlist of the chosen acts, and we're asking you [...]

It's been a minute since Mount Righteous played a show that was both local AND in a club, but that changes tonight with the return of the bigger/meaner/louder Mt. Righteous 2.0 tonight at Rubber Gloves in Denton. French Quarter, Hell-Kite, and Parata round out the nice little bill. Should be a good one. Check it out and buy the SubEx crew a round of $1 PBR's while you're at it. =w=

This has been circling the webs for a couple of years, but just thought I would drag it out for a Wednesday. I am having an ass week and just needed something to cheer me up. A couple of ultra lo-fi covers are something that always makes me just a little bit warmer inside. You may remember French Quarter from his great self titled album from last year among many, many releases. Listen. Visit French Quarter on MySpace and Label Page . ~Smansmith p.s. New album "Ugly Unknowns" is now availalbe, [...]

afternoon, all. taking a few days off to take in the revelry that is mardi gras. here's a few pics from yesterday's excursion into the quarter. Tags: french quarter , mardi gras , [...]
As sort of a feature that I may or may not do as a continuing series, I thought I'd come along and mention five records I'm enjoying as recent additions to my iTunes library. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009) I'm not quite prepared to call this "the best record of the year" or whatever (seriously people, it's January for chrissakes), but presupposing one likes Animal Collective to begin with, it wouldn't be a stretch to call it their best record yet, or at least on par with the awesomeness that [...]

Who? French Quarter What? Quietly amazingly nice folk songs. Sounds like? Mt. eerie with less of the experiment. (rubbish comparison, i know) Wow, 2009 is gonna be great. All those unknown bands I know (this is a joke) are releasing another album that probably no one will ever hear about. Take French Quarter e.g. Great folky songs, that are really beautiful, but no one in Europe has heard of him. (them?). Anyway, they're releasing a new album in January. Well the singer is..and he [...]

I didn't have a blog last year, but i did have all these end-of-year lists, including the 2007 Young Talents list. I posted them on Last.fm . Now, i thought it would've been a fun idea to see whether i have good prophecying skills. To put it differently: how did those bands do this year? Did they live up to my expectations, or did they just sit on their lazy ass all time Well, lets's see! 9. Imadethismistake .. I've blogged about them before . As far as I know [...]

French Quarter makes music that is sparse, emotional, and foot-tappingly rhythmic all at the same time. In this one recording I came across, they were apparently playing live in the alleyway behind the Elna Rae house , and that is not just the location, but also what the recording is called; it was recorded and released by one avid fan to a private music tracker which has since disappeared. The title becomes all the more appropriate once you hear it; and it starts to dig under your skin only after you hear the [...]
