Late last year the New York based band Freelance Whales burst onto the music scene thanks to a few shows at CMJ, a well received debut album, and a wonderful back story that includes busking in the New York subway system. It's a blissful lo-fi garage/surf jam that's recalls Brian Wilson's sun-streaked melodies as filtered through The Black Lips. New in a line of "super limited" 73 releases on Sleep All Day Records , the dudes from French Kissing have just sent over their (catchy) brand new single "Oh Suzanne". Unlike most garage jams, this tune is clean/polished but still cries a Standells-esque jangle. Look for this track b/w the (mostly) unheard "The Lonely Streets of Cairo" here . Local Natives are based in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and take a lot of influence from the sounds and energy of the area. The band's sound is comprised of soaring harmonies and orchestral melodies that remind me a lot of the Zombies , combined with traces of Afro-beat and touches of post-punk. Hell, just listen to that Fugazi -lite bassline that takes over "Sun Hands" about halfway through! This track is the lead single for their forthcoming album "Gorilla Manor." A few days ago I reported that Local Natives had been signed to Frenchkiss records (Passion Pit, The Antlers, Freelance Whales) and were going to release their full-length debut Gorilla Manor on February 16th. Well the good news keeps rolling out. Frenchkiss (which is quickly becoming our favorite label) will be releasing the first single from Gorilla Manor , "Sun Hands" on January 5th (that's the single cover above), but you can download it now for free. Well it was bound to happen at some point and given the current freeze on signings I'm surprised it happened so soon. Nonetheless, barely a month after wooing the CMJ hoards Freelance Whales got a deal. Frenchkiss/Mom + Pop Records signed them up and their debut LP is expected to hit iTunes this Spring. Good news for the band and bad news for me. I guess I won't be booking them for a DIY Brooklyn

French Kissing If I were a surfer I'd definately want to ride the tube, or whatever it is that surfers do, to French Kissing. A band that manages to create music like this from amidst the urban beach drought of London can only be applauded. The other songs on their Myspace are arguably more complete things but there is something about this wammy bar-afflicted, blocky bass-backed, stoner jam that really kicks ass.
