Now this is more the kind of thing - it's about experiences in a city, how it feels to be there. Still not quite the feel of too many to count American city songs, it's true - and perhaps I should find an English artist. Good enough though, Alexander - especially on a grey & rainy summer day in Portsmouth. ♫ Frida Hyvönen - London! Silence Is Wild (2008 - Licking Fingers) buy | myspace --- [...]
A sit down with the two sisters behind Swedish phenomenon First Aid Kit reveals details about their childhood, rise to recognition, songwriting process, and notable influences. Though just 17 and 19, they show why youth is not an obstacle in achieving success. Their highly enjoyable vein of folk-pop speaks volumes on its own.
Some great stuff has been appearing as of late which will put 2010 in line with some of the better musical years of the last decade. Be sure to get out and see Crazy Heart if you have any interest what so ever in country music or the superb acting of Jeff Bridges. Frida Hyvönen - Jesus Was a Crossmaker A cover of a Judee Sill original song written by her and Graham Nash in the early 70's. Saying the song is a simple rendition is to do [...]

There are some occasions these days when I write about a song that I love for Pitchfork track reviews instead of this site. In case you do not follow my work over there, you really ought to pay attention to these songs, as they are both absolutely brilliant. These are only pull-quotes, by the way - click through to Pitchfork for the full reviews. Sleigh Bells - "Crown on the Ground" It's like the final world-shattering salvo of the Loudness War ; a deeply unsubtle scrape of metal-on-metal tones so [...]

The Internet is a funny place. You can make a soul-felt connection with someone and not even know what they look like. Through this blog, I have "met" many people I like very much, feel connected by our interests in music, and consider friends. One of these has been Merz at Mars Needs Guitars blog. In addition to music, we connected over our shared battle against chronic depression. This past week, he made a decision to end Mars Needs Guitars and go offline. This post is to honor that decision and allow me [...]

American Dust julkaisee 22. syyskuuta tribuuttilevyn Crayon Angel: A Tribute To The Music Of Judee Sill . Uudelleen löydetyn amerikkalaisen laulaja-lauluntekijän Sillin tuotantoa tulkitsemaan on saatu nimekäs joukko, johon kuuluvat mm. Beth Orton, Bill Callahan, Final Fantasy, Marissa Nadler ja Frida Hyvönen. Tuttujen kappaleiden lisäksi levyltä löytyy myös kaksi uutta Judee Sillin sävellystä (Beth Orton: Reach For The Sky ja Bill Callahan: Like A Rainbow), jotka on tulkittu levylle jäljelle jääneiden nuottien pohjalta. Lahjakkaan Judee Sillin (1944-1979) ura jäi ainoastaan kahden varsinaisen albumin mittaiseksi (1971 Judee Sill ja 1973 Heart Food [...]

Musicians Pay Tribute to Judee Sill, 70s artist you may not know about; but you should.

[MP3] Daniel Rossen - "Waterfall" [MP3] Frida Hyvönen - "Jesus Was a Crossmaker" Judee Sil l released two acclaimed albums on Dave Geffens' Asylum Records in the mid-to-late '70s -- one self title, the other titled, Heart Food . Her music has since been heralded and cherished by modern musicans who found it fitting to come together to record a tribute record, Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judee Sill dropping [...]

Flow:n musiikkitarjonta [...]
Frida Hyvönen ja Jenny Wilson coveroivat pianon ja ksylofonin avulla Sonic Youthin vuonna 1986 julkaiseman kappaleen Shadow Of A Doubt .
Två av sveriges absolut bästa artister gör en egen version av Sonic Youths Shadow of a Doubt som inte är så otroligt långt från originalet. Fantastiskt. Tack SVT!

Spotify . När och var? 10 september - Halmstad, Halmstad Teater 12 september - [...]
Judee Sill was a singer/songwriter from Oakland, California. She was the artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, and during the 1970s, released two highly acclaimed studio albums on it. This music eventually caught the attention of such acts as Fleet Foxes, Warren Zevo, and Graham Nash, all of whom have recorded or performed her material, but not before Sill died November 23, 1979 due to a drug overdose. She was 35-years-old. November 23, 2009 will mark the 30th anniversary of Judee Sill's untimely passing. To commemorate the occasion, American Dust will look to honor [...]

Judee Sill's life was brief, but her music lives on and has influenced countless artists. I was turned on to Judee's work after hearing Fleet Foxes Robin Pecknold cover "Crayon Angel" at several Fleet Foxes shows last year. A sampling of artists will be paying tribute to Sill in a new collection titled Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the music of Judee Sill. The album will be released Sept. 22 on American Dust Records. I'm really bummed that Robin's version of Crayon Angel won't be included, but there's plenty of other great artists appearing on the compilation including [...]
In the final part of our 'FatCat/OLI appreciation' day we get to see what Shain Shapiro (press) would bring with him to a dessert island and what he's been playing on his CD player recently. Favourite album of the moment? Frida Hyvonen for me. Her album 'Silence Is Wild' is beguiling. Last Book you read? I'm reading a book called 'In Europe' by Dutch journalist Geert Mak. He travels around retracing history from 1899 on. It's about 1000 pages, so [...]

I enjoy a good challenge. So when a recent and otherwise well-written treatise on the socio-economic function of cover songs past and present declared the R.E.M. catalog "too cryptic to survive being covered", I set out to amass a collection of songs which would prove the author wrong. My dubious pursuit was confounded a bit by a long-time personal apathy for R.E.M.'s particularly angsty, often melodramatic performance style, as filtered through frontman Michael Stipe's voice and phrasing, which just aren't to taste. Sure, there's a few songs I wouldn't change the station [...]

Up at the crack of 05:30, just me, the birds, and the Fat Cat watching pigeons potter in the garden; and music too of course, always with the music. I've got Frida Hyvönen for you this morning, a Swedish singer/song-writer I'm very partial to, with something from her first album 'Until Death Comes', released in 2005, and last year's 'Silence Is Wild'. If you're the type that considers what other artists share a small label, she's on Licking Fingers , along with The Concretes & El Perro del Mar , which should come as a huge [...]
