Selkirk natives Frightened Rabbit have revealed the details of a special 'Scottish Highlands' tour set to take place this April. Performing as a full band as well as tackling solo acoustic shows in venues they've never stepped a foot in before, some with capacities as low as 100, this new tour promises to be very special indeed. See below for a full list of dates. April 11 - Café Continental, Gourock* 12 - Twa Tams, Perth* 13 - The Loft, Forres* 14 - The Arch [...]

After the profanity-filled rant of my last post (I do apologise to those of a gentler disposition than myself), I'm afraid it's necessary for me to profane againm with my second-ever post on the wonderful Startled Bunny, from Scotland. Sorry, Frightened Rabbit. I posted about Frightened Rabbit three years ago (three years? Jebus...), and on this special night in Scotland (Robbie Burns Night, for those of you who didn't know - and if you didn't, for shame! For shame! (No, I didn't know until told today either...)), I [...]

Give me the soft, soft static, with a human voice underneath It might seem sacrilegious for a Frightened Rabbit fan like myself to declare a cover of one of their songs better than the original but that's what I'm going to do here. John Statz has stripped the song down to its essence and melded it along with the songs around into an album that captures a nostalgia that the title implies. His cover of Old Old Fashioned appears on his new album, Old Fashioned , which is out [...]

Man, as a blogger who works from home is there such thing as 'taking a day off sick'? I don't think there is, but if there's one thing I miss from the days of having a grown up job it's being able to take a day off sick knowing that someone else would have to take care of the shit you were supposed to do, and it wouldn't all just pile up and sit in wait for you until you got back. So here I sit, secretly wanting to curl up in bed, but knowing full well that, [...]
Two and a half years after my last regular song obsession post I've decided to relaunch the series , this time as an every-two-weeks affair. I just found it was a great way to ask my friends and fellow music fans what they're really obsessing about at the moment. Song obsessions are those songs that get stuck in your head. This series of posts isn't about what I or the other panel members think is best, but what our brain latches onto, those ear worms that loop around and around in your head. [...]
Denver folksinger turns Frightened Rabbits' 'Old Old Fashioned' into a lullaby.

I enjoy Stereogum 's mixes better than most of the other indie-oriented blogs on the web. Their latest mix collects some of the newest and best indie Christmas songs that were released this year (many were featured in our Christmas Selections throughout the month). Check out the tracklist and download the mix as a zip file after the jump. Read more » http://rpc.blogcatalog.com/ http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ ping

Tweet Listen to and download "Cheap Gold" below, Frightened Rabbit 's new Christmas song. Knowing that Scotland's Frightened Rabbit are in the studio, even if it's just to write and record a whimsical Christmas tune, is enough to get me excited at the prospects of them dropping a new album in 2012. We're pushing two years since their last album "The Winter Of Mixed Drinks" [...]
Thankfully, this Christmas has seen some genuinely good festive tunes released. Tunes that would stand up to scrutiny at any time of the year - we've posted a good number: Withered Hand , Caitlin Rose , Evil Hand , and the superb Diamond Rugs amongst others. And this most definitely is another - from the gently downtempo and hypnotic opening and scalpel sharp lyrics, " Cheap gold drips from dressed up trees, cheap gold lines the salted streets" to later on, " [...]

It's that time of year where I get conflicted over Christmas carols. We only have 5 more days of listening to them thankfully. But at this point, I wonder if I should continue in my grinch like ways hating the nauseating carols that play in every store, coffee shop, and radio station all month long and placating it with healthy doses of bourbon and anti-christmas songs, or do I dig in to the treasure trove of indie christmas carols that have been plaguing my inbox since December 1st? Due to my conflicted nature, I'm going to give you both. Today [...]

When we set out to make these lists at the end of each year, we usually try to include tracks that aren't on the Best of Albums List to narrow down the choices. This year we took a more honest approach, but it was terrible to cut 365 days worth of songs down to a mere 25 tracks. We changed them up until the last possible minute, driving ourselves, our loved ones, and each other crazy with our "what if..."s. In the end, though, these are the songs that made us hit repeat, and carried us [...]

Facebook They'd announced some time ago that these were coming, but to actually see the dates and have something on the calendar to circle is still pretty exciting. I am referring, of course, to The Wedding Present's just-announced North American tour wherein they will not only preview material from their forthcoming eighth album - title and release date still to come - but mark the twentieth anniversary of their third full-length Seamonsters by performing it live, in its entirety. They did this on their last [...]

[Not everyone loves Christmas songs but I, for one, can't get enough of them. Every year it seems we get the same old perennial hits, and I guess that's part of the charm - Christmas is a time for comforting familiarity after all - but most of these aren't as fulfilling as one might hope, musically speaking. Never fear, however, as this Yuletide help is at hand, in the form of Eaten by Monsters' selection of the best alternative Christmas songs out there.] My christmas picks have been a [...]

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]
