I've never been totally won over by Carey Mercer. I'm not a big fan of Frog Eyes , and his songs were my third least favourite part about Swan Lake (behind the band name and the production style on Beast Moans ). It seems that Frog Eyes's Carey Mercer aims to be some kind of bookish take on Nick Cave's '80s danger, and I think that despite the think-lipped manners, he is in many ways equally unhinged. One thing we know for sure, Spencer Krug hates down time. Since his debut release in 2002 with Frog Eyes, Krug has released 15 full length albums and 5 EP's under 6 different monikers ( Fifths of Seven , Sunset Rubdown , Frog Eyes , Moonface , Swan Lake , and Wolf Parade ). For Balaeva, "what attracted [her] most was the theme of urban gloom and despair, where everything you look at is palpably wrong and menacing, yet fascinating in some way." Wow deep stuff - but somehow she pulls it off.

The video for Frog Eyes' "The Sensitive Girls" - a song from one of 2010's most overlooked albums Paul's Tomb: A Triumph - was directed by the London-based Russian artist Marsha Balaeva . She used just under 1,000 hand-drawn ink and pencil drawings to create the clip, the first project she's done in color.
