Canadian artists are such affable folks... the indie rock scene from up North reads like a parade of collaborations. The New Pornographers , Broken Social Scene , Stars , The Dears , Apostle of Hustle , and whatever band Spencer Krug is playing in. The latest has Krug ( Wolf Parade , Sunset Rubdown ) with longtime friend Carey Mercer ( Frog Eyes ) and Dan Bejar ( Destroyer ,) in the supergroup Swan Lake . While touring Europe to promote Destroyer's 2004 album Your Blues , Bejar employed Mercer [...]

This is a list of stuff I've been listening to, and while I suppose you could indentify a few common threads, the bottom line is mainly that they are all Jeff-ceptable. To make up for a lack of introspection into the specific quality that ties them all together in my admiration, I offer a whole bunch. All armchair psychoanalyis from the peanut gallery will be carefully considered... Pavement - "Type Slowly" (Live at the Tibetan Freedom Concert) Matador Records is not letting [...]

MS fanatics have been circling their rooms in frenzy, distraught that our latest podcast has been held up for a couple weeks. For that I apologize. I will not, however, apologize for quality! Or sucker punches. Kid should've been paying attention. As anticipated, in all its CD-R length magnificence, is a not-so random sampling of the music that shaped the now departed summer. As always, the best albums are represented, the best tracks of sketchy records are liberated, and this time we've taken more pains to represent the changing music [...]

We're still exactly two months out from the release date of Swan Lake's Jagjaguwar debut, but given the rabid interest, I'm surprised this record hasn't exploded all over the blog world. Any non-sanctioned leak postings of the Canuck supergroup have been quickly addressed and disabled by their label, leading me to believe that anything I might give you would be treated likewise. I've been listening feverishly since fate saw fit to bring us together, and want to do something for those also quaking with ancipation. Hopefully, this track by track preview will give you a good [...]

So Joe and I (along with another cool cat: Mike ) are headed up to L.A. tonight to see Wolf Parade and Frog Eyes. My excitement is overflowing. Spencer Krug might be the busiest man in indie music these days with Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, and now Swans Lake all occupying some of his musical efforts. Hopefully he's ready to howl all night long at The Wiltern . Also, this will also be the first of many live reviews here on RMDS. So hopefully, my outdated [...]
Michigan loves Wolf Parade, it's an established fact now. I have never been to a Magic Stick show that was more packed by so many excited people. By the time the doors were open, opening band The Holy Fuck were already blazing through their set. While the Holy Fuck is a fun and interesting band, they do have some flaws, mainly it's that they milk a formula to the breaking point. It's all about Arpegiators, fast drums, and a repetitive keyboard melody. I still enjoyed them a lot, and they handled a major malfunction on their closing song like [...]
It seems like nowadays no one just makes music with the band they are in. There's the obligatory solo projects and, more recently, the side projects. Broken Social Scene has them popping up all over the place. The New Pornographers have a similar ethos. So do newcomers Wolf Parade. Alec Ounsworth from Clap Your Hands Say yeah has 450 side projects, give or take a few hundred. So it's no big surprise to see Swan Lake formed by Dan Bejar of the New Pornographers and Destroyer, Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown, and Carey Mercer of [...]
Hey, normally I'm not one to just immediately regurgitate record label press releases, but I've been waiting for this particular e-mail ever since this project was announced. Ladies and gentlemen, with thanks to Jagjaguwar Records , I give you the joined powers of Mssrs Krug, Mercer, and Bejar. The Canadian Voltron has come together at last, with their debut record as Swan Lake, Beast Moans . Swan Lake - "All Fires" On first listen, what I can tell you (other than [...]
[MP3] Sandro Perri - Sky Histoire Sandro Perri, best known as the songwriter behind Polmo Polpo is releasing a CD in which he reworks some of his own songs in a bare bones, folk centric arena. "Sky Histoire" is the third track on Sandro Perri Plays Polmo Polpo , and by far one of the most affecting. His voice is vibrant & his guitar sinewy, spread thin but strong enough to gather the tamborines and trumpets into the chanting circle and stare daydreaming in the sky. Look for this album to be release on [...]

This post consists of numerous important topics. The first deals with one of the most excellent weekly stops I make online. Behold all that is Daytrotter.com . Daytrotter not only provides reviews and features, involving exclusive interviews, but mp3s of live sessions (approx. four songs ea.) recorded at Futureappletree Studio 1, Illinois. The tracks are analog recordings, converted to the all powerful digital format for the purpose of transmission to us. These are the Daytrotter Sessions , and they’re available exclusively through Daytrotter.com . "What Daytrotter is attempting to do is to not [...]

'Tis the summer of my discontent. New York is evenly split between two wholly objectionable personalities: Sweaty and rainy. Long no-work weekends have come and gone, making the resulting week feel endless in comparison (Can I remind you that it's only fucking Tuesday?). Plus, musically, it's like we're in a bit of a lull. Now, I don't expect those blissful people not tethered to the whims of the blog world to think so. There were numerous notable records released only today. But since we always have to be so goddamned ahead of everything, most of [...]
The title of Indie Supergroup is a little thin these days given the Canadian exponents' propensity for schizophrenic collaboration. In recent years, the title has been bestowed on both The New Pornographers and Broken Social Scene, but it is a lie. What this flagrant labelling is really indicative of is a ...
