The idea of Swan Lake sounds better in practice than on paper. The band is a collaboration between Daniel Bejar, Spencer Krug, and Carey Mercer. Separately, their work has brought bands like Destroyer, Sunset Rubdown, Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, and the New Pornographers above and beyond; however, who thought these three would be able to take their differing songwriting styles and meld them together into something just as interesting? Swan Lake's latest LP is "Enemy Mine," and it's out now on Jagjaguwar . Here are three tracks from the LP: MP3s: [...]

Who? Himalayan Bear What? Long orchestral songs with a voice like DM Stith or Department of Eagles Sounds Like? DM Stith, Department of Eagles, Chris Garneau I adore all the projects of Casey Mercer (Frog Eyes, Blackout Beach), but before you start running away because you can't stand his dead grandma-voice: this is not a Casey Mercer project! No, it's a project of Ryan Beattie who plays the guitar in Frog Eyes and is the lead man in a band called Chet . (Which i don't [...]
Band: Phoenix Album: Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix Sample: "19013 Not only is this one of the best dance-y singles we've heard in a while, but the French quartet put out an entire album filled with great songs. Get used to it, you'll be hearing about Phoenix for a while. Bonus: You can download the stems for Phoenix' "19013 on their website (wait for splash to load). [...]
Carey Mercer has a blog. It is called Clouds of Evil. It is the best blog I have ever read, bar none. Read it now. That will be all.

Swan Lake is a supergroup, featuring members of Frog Eyes , Wolf Parade , and Destroyer . Their newest album, Enemy Mine is slated for release via Jagjaguwar Records on March 24th. While early indications claim Frog Eye's Casey Mercer as the better writer this time out, you can't count out Destroyer's Dan Bejar. Just take a listen to the following track. Download: Swan Lake - Spider [MP3]
The Canadian collaboration Swan Lake is gearing up for a new LP, and the group's sound is as eclectic as ever. But that should be no surprise considering the band's lineup: Daniel Bejar, Carey Mercer, and Spencer Krug. Collectively, these guys play pivotal roles in Destroyer, Wolf Parade, the New Pornographers, Frog Eyes, and Sunset Rubdown. Does that make Swan Lake a side project of a side project of a side project? Either way, when these three butt heads, great things happen: A seamlessly gallant display of pop chivalry, if you will. Swan Lake is most [...]
Spanish Gold, 2044 - Swan Lake Settle On Your Skin - Swan Lake Upon the first listen, Enemy Mine , the new album by indie super group Swan Lake sounds exactly how I expected it would. There are no unexpected turns here, no change ups. Of course, that isn't really a bad thing. Much like Beast Moans , Swan Lake's new effort is full of indecipherable, cryptic lyrics, bizarre arrangements, and three very distinct voices doing their best to support each other. Personally I [...]

[mp3s] Blackout Beach: "Nineteen, One God, One Dull Star" "Cloud of Evil" Carey Mercer, he of Frog Eyes and the indie supergroup Swan Lake , is dropping his second release under the name of Blackout Beach [...]

Well I have spent a good chunk of my day today getting caught up and updating our concert photo gallery . By way of either our server/host issues or just lack of time there were quite a few photos that I had but had not uploaded to the gallery yet, but now I have (over 500 of them). Anyway, here is a list of the added/updated concert galleries so check them out, in addition to all the ones that were already there (there are a lot!): Black Tie Dynasty/What [...]
Well I have done this before and I am sure I will do it again. Let's see what a pretty damn good label has for us today - a little bit of a sampler of another provider of music...if you will. While I don't pretend to know all the artists on the AKR label (and I wouldn't exactly say they are considered "Slowcoustic") but there are certainly some interesting ones. An almost end to end "indie" presence if you will. What I mean by that is the fact that they [...]

Swan Lake has announced their sophomore effort, Enemy Mine , the follow-up to Beast Moans (2006), will be released March 24, 2009. The Canadian indie super trio - comprised of Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes, Daniel Bejar of Destroyer and The New Pornographers, and Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, and Frog Eyes - has been recording Enemy Mine since February 2008 and the album is finally complete. For fans of any or all of the aforementioned groups, check out these mp3's off Beast Moans from [...]

For many of us, The Raccoons have always been that classic Canadian cartoon about, well a bunch of raccoons. But I believe they too used to thoroughly enjoy rocking out. Not to be confused with Victoria's The Racoons , a band that has been creating a steady following on the West coast with sold out live shows and some great tracks which hint at nothing but good things to come from these guys in the future. For all you readers, I strongly suggest you check out their stuff. I had a chance to talk with singer / guitarist Matthew [...]

So, I've made two friends fight (see comments of my big contest-post), I've made people go berserk from the waiting, but now we're there. The following ten albums are the best of this year, in my humble, but very advising opinion. If you haven't heard any of them, you should keep on listening Britney Spears. 10. Chad Vangaalen - Soft Airplane ( Sub Pop Records ) Sounds like: someone at a concert told me Neil Young, [...]

So, we are getting tired of all this new music, and starting to listen to some old stuff again. But that doesn't stop me from guiding you through my 50 best records of this year. The sequel, starting with number 40 40. Turner Cody - First Light ( B.Y Records ) Sounds Like: Born too late, but okay, we can still sing along with your (anti)folk songs; Benji Cossa [...]

Blackout Beach have announced details of their new record. Skin Of Evil will be released on January 20th. While you're waiting you can get an MP3 for the ridiculously long-titled track "Astoria, Menthol Line, Hilltop, Wave of Evil, 1982" here . Blackout Beach is the side project by Carey Mercer of Frog Eyes. Blackout Beach's Myspace

Who? Paleo aka David Andrew Strackany What? 365 songs in a year's time, with a great mind of honesty Sounds Like? A mixture of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Bob Dylan & other indie-fucking-greatness like Ezra Furman & the Harpoons, Frog Eyes (acoustic version), The Robot Ate Me, Peter and the wolf, .. Paleo was a man with a plan. On the 16th April 2006 he started with his 365 days project. While touring in the US, he forced himself to record a song EACH day, with [...]

Blackout Beach [ Official Site ] is the solo nom de guerre of Carey Mercer (from Frog Eyes and Swan Lake ), and Skin of Evil is his second full-length, and it tells the story of "Donna" and each of her lovers (past & present) say their peace in song. Composed, played and recorded entirely by Mercer alone, these songs revel in the dark side of the heady proto-punk Cleveland axis (e.g. Peter Laughner , David Thomas ) with a minimal, textural [...]

It's the distortion that I love in Wolf Parade, like an aged hippy vibing out to vibrations travelling up his shins in a bus depot, I can put my fingers out and try and touch it. It's like guitars and synth with sore throats, an intense rumble that the tart voice of Spencer Krug struggles against, slinks alongside and howls above. The bludgeoning percussion tries to clear the mucus, (just listen to the intro of You Are A Runner ...) but just gives it an emphatic military discipline. Like a parade. The sound's most similar to a growl; Wolf [...]

I really wasn't keen on the last Wolf Parade album, but I like this one much better. The first was released about the time that Broken Social Scene, the New Pornographers and various others were leading something of an explosion of Canadian bands onto the scene, and all the talk was of these loose-knit collectives which seemed to spawn endless musical projects with a variety of combinations of members. Wolf Parade themselves came from situation in Vancouver that was lumped into a similar box, although despite comprising former members of Frog Eyes and Hot Hot Heat, I never [...]
