Fun Fun Fun Fest is right around the corner! Explosions In The Sky headlining the festival in 2007 is probably one of my favorite Fx3 moments, so I'm stoked to see them returning to a much bigger and badder event. Speaking of Explosions In The Sky, they’re fantastic. Post-rock, instrumental rock, instruMETAL ... whatever it is Explosions In The Sky do, they do it well. It's not all about them, though, so this week’s playlist is Top Ten Instrumental Bands Not Named Explosions In The Sky . OK, it’s not really 10, it’s [...]

Coachella is around the corner! I'm sure you all are looking forward to it as I am. Remember to check out The Radio Department while you're there. Their album 'Clinging to a Scheme' is definitely worth checking out for those fans of electro noise pop. With their synth hooks and indie beats, they have gotten a lot of success in the UK. Last year, they reached number 20 on Billboard 200 for albums of the year. Which makes me wonder, "Why didn't I hear of them sooner?" My favorite song off the Clinging to [...]

Silian Rail Silian Rail When it was announced that From Monument to Masses would be playing their last show ever at the Great American Music Hall with fellow Bay Area instrumental acts Silian Rail and Judgement Day , I remember feeling genuinely upset yet content since they had picked the perfect venue and opening acts to close out their 10 year career. Eric Kuhn and Robin Landy, otherwise known as Silian Rail performed an impressive set, showcasing an enormous sound [...]

From Monument to Masses - "Beyond God & Elvis" It was a real treat to sit down and interview these guys for the podcast last year, and we know they'll be missed by devoted fans around the world. Earlier this year, guitarist/co-founder Matthew Solberg offered [...]

I'm feeling very old this week, as two of my favorite Bay Area bands will be playing break-up shows in two nights. The first is my old band Audrye Sessions who will be saying goodbye on Friday, August 27th at The New Parish in Oakland. The second is From Monument to Masses who are playing final show [...]

this new primer covers what you could call the "post-slint" side of post-rock; these are bands that tend to start quiet then get really loud then get quiet again. they tend to be on very good terms with their distortion pedals. they tend not to involve singers. they are frequently exhileratingly predictable (i went through a phase of being "off mogwai" because it always feels like you know what's coming next, until i realised i wanted to hear it anyway). they tend to have very muscular bass sounds. i like all of those things. ::: [...]

From Monument to Masses - "Beyond God & Elvis" With much sadness and nostalgia we share the news that beloved local band From Monument to Masses are calling it quits, as announced in lengthy statement made by guitarist/co-founder Matthew Solberg on Golden Antenna Records ' website: "...There is too much to say here about our experience. We’ll be blogging about it later, I’m sure. Suffice it to say, that I’m incredibly grateful for my time spent with FMTM and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. [...]

#30: Blind Pilot - One Red Thread It's about that time of year. No need for an introduction I'm just going to jump in with #30. This was a really great single that got a little play on KCRW but I thought deserved much more attention. Haven't heard too much from Blind Pilot since, but if they keep cranking out tunes like this, everyone will have to pay attention. #29: Eve - Me N My (Up In the Club) This was a breath of fresh air. Commercial rapper [...]

The Bay Area may not have a single unified scene, but its diverse musical communities produced a ton of acclaimed records in 2009. The following list collects thirty-two of the highlights that made this another banner year for Bay Area indie music. It's a collection that showcases the depth of Bay Area indie in 2009, and one suspects that few other regions have offered this volume of quality releases this year. A couple of qualifiers: This isn't a comprehensive list of excellent local records from 2009 or intended as any sort of official Bay Bridged [...]

Perhaps I came a little mentally unprepared for the Neon Indian / Crystal Castles show last night because I had NO idea it was going to be so epically loud and amazing. Its fair to say that Crystal Castles performance was the music equivalent of getting my teeth kicked in .. in a good way .. Imagine not being able to see who is playing - You hear the solid drum beat paired with a dark heavy synth rocking some 8-bit fusion and the vocals kick in which could only come from the most hardcore-est chick of them all. Well [...]
I checked my myspace for the first time in months yesterday. I found this dude sitting in my friend requests and thought I'd give him a listen. When i first clicked on Skitsnygg i thought i had stumbled upon some Russian underground artist - go to his myspace and you'll see why Anyways, [...]

Last week, Miami saw Dim Mak's fav Canadian duo MSTRKRFT destroy ear drum's at LIV for the weekly Dirty Hairy party . I think their third or fourth track they dropped the MONSTER 'beyond god to elvis' remix from fellow Canadian Felix Cartal , who will be playing here on Saturday the 11th at Heathrow. I'll be doing a little opener set before the main gig, so I hope to see all my Miami dirty dancers in attendance! Email me at troykurtz@mac.com for guestlist. See you there. Check out the ///BONES interview with [...]
So far my two favorite remixes of Felix Cartal 's original "Skeleton." Both are heavy re-works. John Roman 's is more on the glitchy side while Bird Peterson gives it a low pitched bassline fix. Both remixes are insane, I highly encourage you to download. Felix Cartal- Skeleton Download audio file (skeleton.mp3) Felix Cartal- Skeleton (John Roman remix) [...]

like the closing track, the opening song on an album is a pretty crucial selection. just like the opening line of a novel. which song do you choose to draw your listener? do you start quietly - a bold move forcing the listener to move in closer, pay more attention. or do you charge out of trap, loud and proud screaming attention? in the first of what may or may not be a series, here's track 1 of a few recent/upcoming releases. ::: harappian night recordings - mal de ojo from "the glorious [...]
