Here it is, the cheery classic carols and a handful of christmas originals from your favorite indie and folky bands. I hope it's enjoyed by those that like christmas songs because it was a bit of a struggle to put all this good cheer and songs of joy and peace in one playlist without gagging. Just kidding...kind of. If you want the darker side check out yesterday's anti-christmas playlist . There's some secret bonus songs on the ZIP file not listed below too. A Very [...]

Hey There, Well...I didn't think I'd be doing this again this year but someone actually requested it. We'll see what new Christmas music turns up in the next month and post it all here. Cheers, Craig Here's the first new stuff I'd like to share. Beta Radio are a Wilmington, NC based duo who excel at vocal harmonies and kind of eclectic americana instrumentation. Here's their song "The Song The Season Brings" The Song The Season Brings Also Inara George and [...]

Words by Jim It's really hard to remember how bands got their music out before the advent of the internet. How did that work? I seriously have no idea and I guess if you weren't signed to a label, well, you're shit out of luck. Small labels barely existed and bands scrapped their way around local towns. Blog was just a funny word inside someones head. Man. Sounds like the dark ages to me. So it's only fitting that the internets have brought me a band that harkens back to the days long before [...]

Quite an impressive lineup that includes 4 Halfway House alums as well as some of our favorite Michigan bands. Tickets are $12 per day with a limited number of discounted weekend 3 day passes for $20 - available until July 15th @ the Boiling Pot web page . Fair to say that's ridiculous cheap for the caliber of lineup offered. The event takes place @ Arcadia Creek Festival Place in downtown Kalamazoo - 9/29 to 10/1. For more information about this community event - go [...]

I have been a fan of the site Daytrotter for several years now. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Daytrotter, it is a music site that has a little studio they call The Horseshack in downtown Rock Island, IL. They invite bands to stop by in between shows while they are on tour to record a short little session, which is then put up on the site for free download along with a cartoon drawing of the artist and a short essay on the band and their music. Often the sessions are nothing more than spontaneous re-workings of [...]
So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band, a show preview, or something and let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we'll just round 'em all up for you. Most of these videos are of artists we have previously talked about here on Draw Us Lines, so we won't be telling you much about the bands themselves, just some musings that really aren't worth a damn. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a trillion. Hold on to your hats! Today we're featuring [...]

Frontier Ruckus made my favorite album of 2010 and also played one of my favorite shows of the year - a uniquely intimate show at Harper's Ferry where the band turned a cavernous, empty room into a special, unforgettable moment. In February the band returned to Boston and this time found themselves playing to a packed crowd at Berklee's Red Room at Cafe 939. This was my first show at the Red Room, but it won't be my last - it's an intimate space with a fantastic sound system and the added bonus of a full-service [...]

When we saw My Morning Jacket last August in Chicago they played a new song "Circuital," which has been announced as the title for their forthcoming sixth studio album. Elsewhere: Thanks to everyone who came to Linneman's last night for the Love Language and Blessed Feathers . What a great night! We've got Libraries on repeat now. Daytrotter has sessions with Deep Dark Woods , The Low Anthem [...]

The beginning of March is resembling Christmas in the music world today. Not only is there a stellar list of new releases but Daytrotter presents us not one but TWO fantastic sessions. Frontier Ruckus - Daytrotter Session Low Anthem - Daytrotter Session

Visible Voice is one year old today! I vividly remember the late night that I published the first post (a live recording of Dawes at Great Scott), and the intervening year has been a lot of fun and a lot of work. It's been exciting and gratifying to meet fans of the site at shows, watch traffic grow day-after-day and generally have an outlet for my passion for music - I can't wait to see what year #2 has in store... From the beginning, the goal of Visible Voice was to expose readers to great new [...]
Frontier Ruckus' fantastic "Deadmalls & Nightfalls" was our #1 album of 2010. Matthew Millia's simple songs of vivid nostalgia played out on frozen, crumbling suburban landscapes burrowed their way deep into my head and when it came time to pick a favorite album, there was really no other option. Now the band returns to Boston for a show at Berklee's Cafe 939 this Saturday Feb 12 . We're giving away 2 tickets to the show. All you have to do to enter is head to our Facebook page [...]

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting at my apartment in Portland, Maine. I was in the living room, the sun soaked floor casting glow back onto all corners of the room as I thumbed through the pages of the Portland Phoenix. The cool fall air filtered in through the window, filling my lungs with it's refreshing aroma. That's when the call came. It's something I couldn't have expected, something no one ever expects. My maroon 1989 Chevy Lumina Euro Edition, which was residing peacefully back in New Hampshire, had turned it's engines over for the last [...]
Lots of news from the great state of Michigan: Download Chris Bathgate's new single, "No Silver," here. I'm really enjoying the rumbling drums and multi-layered percussion (is that a washboard I hear?). Classic old school backwater folk music. Frontier Ruckus, some friends of Chris' with a similar sound and also hailing from Michigan, is on tour. Check out the dates.

We're barely a week into 2011 and we've already got our first major summer festival line up announcement of the season that has us excited for the warmer months ahead. Earlier today the fine folks behind the Wakarusa Music Festival dropped a monster list of bands that will take to the variety of tents and stages over the weekend of June 2 -5 at Mulberry Mountain in Ozark, Arkansas. Now in it's seventh year, the jam-friendly festival will be headlined by the mighty My [...]
Whew, just made it in before midnight! Here's my list of favorites of 2010. It's been a helluva year, I'm very much looking forward to 2011 and what it might bring. It's all up from here, baby! In no particular order, they're all my favorites, and I've not got through most of anything past September. So apologies to all you wonderful musical folk who have sent me stuff. I'll slowly crawling out from under my rock. These few albums are very near and very dear to my heart. I couldn't have got through the year without them. [...]

We all know I am a big fan of the Michigan music scene and why not with a line up and winter music festival like this? It's Mittenfest V and it's the place to be if you are local or planning on being in the Michigan area - If only I wasn't 3000+ miles away. :-/ There are crazy amounts of talent performing over the 4 days starting tomorrow. Think about it; Matt Jones , Fields of Industry , This is Deer Country , [...]

It would behoove anybody with deep ties to Michigan to hear the Frontier Ruckus catalog. With a delicate quaver to his voice, Matt Milia dredges up imagery of the old Summit Place Mall, the Silverdome and I-75 to set the scenes upon which he reflects. I've never been to Michigan. But I do have my very own dead mall to think back on, my very own landmark stadium and my very own highway that I know so well I could almost do it with my eyes [...]

I might have mentioned previously that I'm sort of Scrooge McDuck when it comes to holiday music, much to the chagrin of the people around me. No, you won't hear Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" echoing from the speakers of my office (or, rather, the corner of the dining room where I house my computer). Instead, you'll hear the same sad, indie music you hear year 'round from this gal. Who needs "Little Drummer Boy" when you have "Westfall" , am I right? Okay, maybe no one agrees with me. Regardless, if there's [...]
