As a tangential follow-up to the last post about a music video staring Ray Wise, here's my favorite recent discovery: Twin Peaks. They are a bunch of young guys making hazy rock like a humid blast of summer...something perfect for the dwindling days of winter. There are touches of Supergrass, Wavves and lot of noisy Chicago classics. "Stand In The Sand" definitely gives reason to keep an eye on these guys for more releases. Hell, they've already got an appearance under their belt on Chicago's venerable public access, indie kids dance party Chic-a-go-go. That's a [...]

In nine days the music, tech (or interactive), and film worlds will begin to congregate in Austin, Texas for the most important ‘conference’ on Earth these days, South By Southwest (SXSW). All of them will be traveling to Austin with the hope of shaking, rattling, and stirring up their industry by making their phantasms reality. And The Hideout, who annually throws a benefit concert to help artists pay their way, will once again be sending off some of Chicago's best talent with a SXSW - Send Off Party on Saturday, March 9th. [...]
Parisian producer Deluce caught our ear a couple of year's ago with unique brand of space-age electro, well he's back with a new remix for fellow French producer Pyramid and his track 'The Frontier'. Deluce takes the already cinematic track and fattens it up with plently of swirling synths, scrunch-y percussion and rubbery basslines - it's not a million miles away from the original, if a little punchier and more focussed. Deluce is well and truly back on our radar. Grab it for free below. [...]
Frontier Ruckus - Dealerships G etting closer to January 29th is getting us closer to the release of Frontier Ruckus' next album, Eternity Dimming , the next album in the mythology of Matthew Milia and his rolling narrative and heavy lyrical songs. The single "Dealerships," which refers to all sorts of physical and internal stations within the night landscape of Michigan winter. They deal out that chalky feeling of sterile frigidness, memory, and human pathos," Milia explained. "The used car dealerships around the Silverdome, the Salvation Armies, the Catholic schools, the carports smoking with [...]

F rontier Ruckus has a folk style altogether different from most any band. A straightforward, approachable feel, punctuated with whipsmart lyrics that seem to roll off frontman's Matthew Milia's tongue but what differentiates them is the delivery of the music. It's got a slightly depressed almost "Fall all year round," kind of feel, its the perfect slow day record for wrapping up by your record player with a hot cup of coffee (or tea if that's your choice) and a full focused listen as the leaves outside drop, or the snow falls. Their upcoming record, Eternity of Dimming , [...]

6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. Consider it your jam of the day — a sweet, sweet gift from me to you. I love you, dude. This dude's voice. Shit, man. Here's something you should know: Augustine released three albums in one day during the month of October year last and all [...]
Two weeks ago Toronto-based lo-fi electro outfit Beta Frontiers gave us their remix of Phèdre's 'Aphrodite'. Now Phèdre flex their production muscles with a remix of the Beta Frontiers track 'Hondo'. Download the song over at BrooklynVegan. Phèdre will play its first US show this Saturday, June 9th when they headline Mercury Lounge in New York, with openers Rioux. They return to [...]

Here's a classic case of remix back-scratching, you do mine then I'll do yours ( Beta Frontier remixed Phèdre's Aphrodite the other week ). Thankfully we love both these bands and their remixes rule too, so dig in and check this Phèdre remix of the Beta Frontiers' Hondo .

I had just put the new Iggy Pop in my music player and I thought that this track was him getting real contemporary like on that Teddy Bears song ; turns out it was Beta Frontiers just c rushing on Phèdre's ' Aphrodite .' Complete with laser beam synths and an intergalactic drumkit, this song's on that deep space vibe; perfect for the final frontier. Listen and grab it below duh. mp3: Phedre - Aphrodite (Beta Frontiers rmx) right click for download hat tip NMB

Take me back to the 80s. Beta Frontiers have taken their fellow Canadians Phedre 's poppy " Aphrodite " into a retro dance track. mp3

Frontiers have had a great 2011 and judging by their latest track it is set to be a great 2012. 'Organ Grinder' was released on their soundcloud only a week or so ago and since then I've been playing this synth heavy Post-Rock anthem continuously! As this track may suggest, they've got a great bunch of songs. And with nearly a full albums worth of tracks under their belts it's just a matter of time to when they get picked up by a label and are thrown into [...]

It is strange to think that tuxedos, which are today the height of formality, were once an informal concession to comfort while dining. As Lord Grantham dons a tuxedo in last week’s Downton Abby, he cautiously notes that “All the chaps in London are wearing them only for the most informal evenings.” Mr. Carson can’t have been happy. It’s all a slow slide until we’re all wearing Snuggies , I suppose. While the tailless dinner jacket got its start from the tailor of Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Edward, it got its [...]
