I've been thinking a lot about the list-making process. Someone recently asked me: What is the purpose of making a list? My initial reaction - because it's fun - is actually somewhat shallow. Is it really? Yeah, probably...somewhat...maybe? But if so, still: Why? In listening to me think out loud about this, my wife commented that she doesn't make lists for fun. Why, then? "To keep myself sane. To make sure I don't forget things I need to do." In other words: To make order out of chaos. To provide structure to an unstructured world. As [...]

Welcome to FWBA's best-of 2011. This has been such a meaningful year in music to me that it's tough to represent in one post. I'm going to be honest, this took me quite a long time. I wanted to do this year justice because personally, it was a total dream: living in San Diego working with some of my favorite artists, going to SXSW and Lollapalooza, seeing Dave Bazan in stranger's living rooms, Feist play a hometown show, saw tune-yards electrified show at Soda Bar clocking in as one of my favorite performances, watching Zach Rogue and my boyfriend playing [...]

Best friends, labelmates, collaborators, traveling companions. These all describe the relationship between Andy Cabic of Vetiver and Eric D. Johnson of Fruit Bats . Both bands have new releases this year on Sub Pop, and both joined us at the XPN2 studios for music and conversation. Now you can stream this special co-headlining session whenever you like! We'll hear Vetiver play songs from their new album, The Errant Charm , and Fruit Bats play a selection of songs from their most recent albums, The [...]
There are lots— lots —of end-of-year lists out there right now. I've sifted through so many lists for so many years that the very prospect of ingesting them all has become too tedious to bear. That said, there are a handful that I find to be pretty dependable every year, and that always yield at least a couple of finds for me. I've spent some time cycling through the tens (hundreds) of songs/albums on the lists below and have come away with something worthwhile from all of them. (Related, a couple of weeks [...]
![Best Albums of 2011 [HearYa's Top 50]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3926807_lg.jpg)
Here are the best albums of 2011 as chosen by our panel of experts (Woody, Shirk and I). I'm not a huge fan of ranking albums because my personal rankings are fluid and change depending on the time of year, my mood of the moment, and the album's propensity to get played again and again over time. Because we collaborated on the list, we each had to leave off some of our personal top 502s. In the end, man-to-man mud wrestling prevailed and we compromised. The unanimous top album among all of us was Tamer Animals [...]
If it's December, then you know it's Mixmas time at You Ain't No Picasso! Each year I get a bunch of my favorite bands to contribute themed mixes and share their thoughts about each of the tracks.

I can't believe it's already that time again- and I'm just mildly envious/sad that I'm not there to be apart of it this time because last year's Invisible Children Holiday Benefit show was pretty much the highlight of my 2010. This year, the guys have totally outdone themselves with TWO nights of music back to back. Check out the lineup below. And get your tickets now because it sold out quick last year- and with a lineup that includes, MOUNTAIN GOATS, FRUIT BATS + VETIVER playing together- it's most definitely going to sell out. I'll be [...]
The Fruit Bats and The Parson Redheads brought their folk rock aesthetics to Great American Music Hall.
Saturday night is all right for ... incredible small shows: ► Tour De France , the L.A.-based songwriting duo of Bernadette Colomine and Samuel H Collin, celebrate the release of a new album with a show at the Bootleg Theater that promises guest turns by Rufus and Martha Wainwright. London-based Still Corners , witha new reord just out on Sub Pop, opens. ► Fruit Bats , their fifth full-length "Tripper" just out in August, headlines the Troubadour, with L.A. faves the Parson Red Heads supporting. That's their video for "You're Too Weird," [...]

High School throwback! I first started listening to the Fruit Bats via The OC in the early 2000s. Glad to hear they're still alive and kickin. This song's pretty good. Off their 2011 album Tripper: Fruit Bats - "You're Too Weird" And, just for fun… Fruit Bats - "Rainbow Sign" (2003) — Basil
What do you get when you mix the Bee Gees with Flight of the Conchords? Fruit Bats, apparently. Not the Halloweeny kind, but the band from Chicago. With super high-pitched vocals and acoustic guitars, the Fruit Bats really know how to write the catchy throwback-style songs Bret and Jemaine might've written while sitting on their twin beds, staring awkwardly into each other's eyes, channeling the Gibbs brothers. And I mean that as a compliment. Fruit Bats can also get a little rockin', and a little folky-a good combination, if you ask me. But my first impression of the band, the song [...]

Austin's own Wild Child are keeping things classic and sweet with their new single "Silly Things." Not only is this single beautifully orchestrated, its lyrics and meaning are intriguingly meaningful and relatable. Wild Child has created a heart-wrenchingly gorgeous [...]

Being that my typical night consists of hitting the sack at around 10pm, and that my new radio show is Friday nights from 10pm to midnight, I figured that my second show would center around the theme of sleep . So I pieced together a playlist of bedroom pop, chill wave, dreamy shoegaze and what I've dubbed as psychedelic ambiance. I took over for Stuarto just after 10 with a brief description of my first track, which I don't believe made it on air. The switch-over was a bit rushed [...]
