I first heard Smile at the ripe age of 14, back when KDF was still 'the' rock station in Nashville. They had a nightly show, 'Top 9 at 9', er something like that, and for a few days in 1994, I think at the top of that list, was a track by Smile, 'Staring At The Sun'. Something about it grabbed me. It was new, dark, spacey (outer, not Kevin), huge. Different. Lemme back up a bit. At this point in time, I was just beginning to look beyond what my scattered teenage brain considered the mainstream. It [...]
What's the sexiest choice in facial hair? The Erotic Specialist weighs in.
by Andrew Wilhelm (Denver)If you love livin' in the past, Denver is the place to break out your bell bottoms and denim vests this week. The Mile High City is hosting quite a few bands who jam out 70s rock unabashedly and (hopefully) unironically.First, we've got Valient Thorr and Early Man on Thursday. Valient Thorr have Southern groove in their blood as if Second Helping is the hippest thing
If you have a certain band name, you're a lock for a Halloween show. Case in point: Fu Manchu plays Double Door Saturday, while Electric Frankenstein comes to Beat Kitchen . Both bands bring the rawk. Fu Manchu rode the stoner rock wave about a decade ago as Queens of the Stone Age was just getting notice. Electric Frankenstein, a scuzzy hard rock/punk kind of band, has been around for a long time and put out a number of albums. But like Fu Manchu, the band has little more [...]

Fu Manchu Signs Of Infinite Power Century Media 20 October 2009 by Amit Sharma If Fu Manchu were an animal, they would be a Woolly Mammoth – a giant, fuck-off hairy bastard from the Prehistoric Siberian Tundra. Their latest offering, Signs Of Infinite Power, will makes you feel a bit like being stoned whilst floating around the solar system, perhaps somewhere near the alluring rings of Saturn. [...]

Ever since I first viewed the phrase on a souvenir t-shirt in the Wisconsin Dells at a young age, one personal mantra - that I'd "try anything once" - has stuck with me. The mantra has resulted in experiences of varying degrees of success. [ On a scale of 1-10: a night out at the race track (1) , dating a woman (1.5) , working as a magician's assistant for a week (5) , eating a fried cheese curd (10) .] But no matter what the rating, each experience certainly taught me something [...]
Eddie Glass formed stoner-rock outfit Nebula out of the ashes of his former band, Fu Manchu, in 1997. Well over a decade later, the band's primordial psychedelic mix of guitar-driven mayhem and raucous fuzzed-out power chords sounds as menacing as ever. With a newly-tweaked lineup, Nebula will unveil its latest collection, Heavy Psych , on Tuesday via Tee Pee Records. The album serves as the full-length update to last year's tour-only EP of the same name. Have a listen to "The Dagger," and smoke 'em if you've got 'em. Nebula - "The Dagger" [...]
Paul Velten, lead singer and guitarist for uprising Chicago indie rock group The Silents, took the time to talk with me about the band's DIY attitude and upcoming album Sleepwalker. Bethany, PopWreckoning: Can you tell me a little bit about your band's formation? You and Jake [Fish] kind of already knew each other, right? Paul Velten, The [...]

Anyone who has listened to "Godzilla" with Blue Öyster Cult knows what a great song it is. When you hear it as the opening act, with downtuned guitars and a massive wall of sound, on a Fu Manchu concert, you just freak out! I was 30 years old when I saw them at KB in Malmö, but I acted like I was 17... There is a good chance that Are We Ape also like Fu Manchu. Not that they are some kind of clones, but the sound with downtuned instruments and fuzzy [...]
Think of a Black Flag version of Local H and maybe you can start to imagine It's Casual. The first time I heard this power duo, they were playing at the DIY-esque Relax Bar in one of the least glamorous parts of Hollywood. These guys give off the intensity and charisma of a thrash band twice their size; my attention was equally split between the singer/guitarist Edward Solis and the drummer, who goes by the name W.C.E., as their technical skills belied the grungy setting and simple-seeming lyrics. It's Casual's brand of song [...]
I was perusing AMG's top two tiers of classic stoner rock tunes, and couldn't but think that might be a good guide for an S2S post (or series of posts). I can't say I personally agree with the selections, but it would be a fantastic guide for a beginner. Song: Gardenia Artist: Kyuss Album: Welcome to Sky Valley Comments: A beloved classic, and a favorite of mine, though I'd probably put "50 Million Year Trip (Downside Up)" at #1. There was actually a video for this in rotation on Headbangers Ball. Yes, [...]
Every Wednesday, your hosts each post a suitably stale video clip that we think needs to be revisited. Click here for more Crusty Clips. Got a clip you think we should post? Send it to crustcake@gmail.com by beatmasterspeech (LA) Whether they're singin' about muscle cars or traveling to the center of the earth, Fu Manchu are most likely always stooooneeedddd. Most 'stoner rock' fanatics cite the band's In Search Of album as the pinnacle of their stoner career (see Decibel 's [...]
by beatmasterspeech (LA) If once is not enough for you, how 'bout three times? That's right, Ministry and Meshuggah are playing three back-to-back shows this coming weekend at the HoB Sunset (find me there Friday, I will be wearing a black shirt and jeans). Appropriately titled 'C U LaTour,' this tour will be the last for Ministry; they are hanging up the old road dog boots. It's gonna be one hell of a show with Ministry capping it off with a two and a half hour set! Check this quote [...]

As we've already mentioned , EAR FARM will be hitting the road tomorrow to head down to Austin, TX for South by Southwest . Our trip will include multiple stops along the way to survey local color, see live music, and enjoy the best barbecue our country has to offer. Speaking of which, we'd like to take a moment to announce something very special we'll be doing on our way down to/back from SXSW. EAR FARM is going to be working with CHOW to bring you a very special feature in the coming [...]

The Fu rockt und rollt am Sonntag Abend, 11. November, das ehrenwerte Zürcher Mascotte am Bellevue. Die sandigste Band der Welt kommt mit ihrem härtesten Album " We Must Obey " im Gepäck und mit einem Tross voll Strand-Buggies und Monster-Vans. Wrumm, Wrumm! Hits wie "Pigeon Toe", "Mongoose" und natürlich "King of the Road" werden uns straight back to the Stoner-Rock-Ära zurückbefördern. You must obey! Fu Manchu - [...]
Aside from me drunkenly ruining Fu Manchu's show for many other fans in attendance earlier this year I've had nothing but positive feelings surrounding Fu Manchu's latest, We Must Obey . The album is fairly strong, especially in comparison to the band's last outing Start The Machine . However the video for "Hung Out To Dry" detracts from the music with its low grade b-movie theme and...well, just its general ridiculousness; oh well, it was good while it lasted. (more...)

I know this isn't a particularly original question. Indeed, it's a rather tired, cliched one that I've often seen trotted out in weak stand-up comedy routines and small-talk circles. But I'm going to ask it anyway: What is it about cars that turns men into drooling, acerebral, aggressive baboons? I ask because two separate incidents over the past week each brought the query to mind. Two times that led me to ponder whether castration might actually be a useful tool for social control. I usually drive into work fairly early each [...]
