It's May, and the all-instrumental extravaganza continues. . . "Return of the Birdland" by LINK WRAY I would be remiss if I did a series of posts on great instrumentals and failed to mention Link Wray. More important to the electric guitar and perhaps rock itself than Jimi Hendrix, Wray has not yet been inducted in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. What the fuck?! "Bongolia" by MICHAEL VINER'S INCREDIBLE BONGO BAND The Incredible Bongo Band were most well known for their hit (and oft-sampled) version of The Shadows' [...]

Okay, so here we go. A few brief words about the responses. First, there were 151 in total-a lot less than I'd hoped for, but more than I expected. Not all responses provided a full list of 25, and not all confined themselves to rock music and/or indie labels. Also, the definition of what is an indie label was a source of contention, with some purists arguing that Matador should be excluded (some folks say has joined the RIAA with respects to some artists), and others arguing that major label imprints (like Enigma) should be considered [...]

We here at the culture of me have decided to entice you, my dear readers, with double the usual Pick 3s. So, here's the random 6 up-for-grabs tracks for today, fresh off the old collection. Enjoy! The Melvins - Queen , from the Stoner Witch LP Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - (Do You Wanna) Come Walk With Me? , from the Ballad Of The Broken Seas LP Thom Yorke - Analyse , from the The Eraser [...]
Over the past few days, I've been hypnotized by the steady stream of albums on the Dischord Records label making their way into the Rhapsody library. I started compiling a playlist and writing a post, but with each passing day, the picture becomes more complete, until today, where it's near full saturation. So, before I get too far, here's a playlist that documents nearly every Dischord release, starting with #1 ( Teen Idles , Minor Disturbance EP [1980]) going to #160 (The Evens, Get Evens [2006].) [...]

I don't think Chris expected the strong reaction he got when he told me about the shootings at Va. Tech yesterday. Yes, I'm the site's resident Atlanta blogger but I grew up in Va. Beach, VA so this hits pretty close. It is scary as fuck trying to get a hold of everyone you can think of to make sure that they weren't there. But how do you get a hold of maybe 1/4 of the people you went to high school with? Or worked with? Or grew up with? [...]
Song: Deadhead Artist: The Teen Idles Album: Minor Disturbance Comments: Jeff Nelson and Ian Mackaye's pre Minor Threat album. Pure punk if nothing else Song: I Don't Want Hear It Artist: Minor Threat Album: First Demo Tape Comments: The guitar on this song is amazing. I remember this song from my teen years when Minor Threat was a distant memory (3 whole years). Now twenty four years later I still remember the line, "First your telling stories, Now your Telling lies, [...]
Here's a local friend who's one of the most respected DJs of Istanbul, with an immense knowledge of early soul/funk/disco/house whatever, he's played with most of the legendary DJs that surfaced in Istanbul and he's gonna play before Coldcut this month. A few weeks ago I asked him to write some stuff, surprisingly he's gone back to his punk roots and came up with a rare track.. Say hi to Baris K who might be with us once in a while. // mersenne out. Fugazi was probably at the first place [...]
Way before what teens today think of as emo, the term was shorthand for emotional hardcore. It was not a dirty word that referred to the lifestyle that gets so much negative press these days. Originating in the Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980's, some so-called "first-wave" emo or emocore bands included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Moss Icon. Then came Fugazi (featuring ex-members of Rites of Spring and Embrace), Jawbox, and so on from there... This is (according to me) a brief history of emo in music only. Yes, it will be incomplete in some [...]
Dear friends, He had a hard look to him yet when he smiled he looked like someone else entirely; a 5 year-old on his birthday or someone incapable of deceit. Whenever I saw him across the street in the neighborhood deli, he would count each coin carefully, unused to the denominations and founding father faces. His family had just moved from Jamaica and were renting a one family home that was practically attached to my apartment building. Their second floor windows and my third floor window were close enough that I could easily hand over some supplies should [...]
"HOW DARE YOU EMBARRASS ME IN FRONT OF WFMU! There's people judging me right now! They're laughing! Jerry has his old-fashioned radio program with the old records, he had the phones lit up! It was like a Christmas tree! I'm playing new records!" -- Tom on the humiliating, crash-and-burn start to the program "Tom's show is pretty good." -- Jerry in West Orange, curbing his enthusiasm for the night's first pledge "I did some time in Lompoc . I don't wanna talk about it." [...]

Due to popular demand, here are some more Fugazi rarities for your consumption. As faras I know, every song ever released by Fugazi was recorded in one place; the legendary Inner Studios in DC. However in 1993, the band decided to see how things would sound if they mixed things up slightly and drafted in a different producer. Thus they spent a few days with Steve Albini in his own Electrical Audio studios in Chicago, Illinois, where they tested some of the songs that would later form the bulk of that year's stunning In On The Killtaker . [...]

I miss Fugazi. A lot. Unlike a lot of unlucky people, I did in fact get to see them (at their 2nd to last show to date back in the hazy days of...2001), but still they were one of the bands that really got me into experimental music, and I would LOVE to hear a new record. Still they have left us with an awful lot of music to digest, including a few rarities that to be honest I still don't feel i've listened to enough. As well as those Albini-produced demos for 1993's In On The [...]
Ian MacKaye recently testified against a bill to ban all-ages clubs in the DC area. MP3: Rend it - Fugazi
Dischord Records Office Staff circa 1996 (?) Dischord Records, birthplace to straight-edge hardcore, emo, and home to the likes of Fugazi, Jawbox, Shudder to Think and The Nation of Ulysses recently launched an excellent update to their website, www.dischord.com . The site continues to feature band info, as well as record releases and upcoming shows featuring Dischord and DC-metro-based artists. Additionally, there is a feature written by ex-Dusters/ex-Severin/Dischord employee, Alec Bourgeois regarding Councilman Jim Graham's recent push to ban minors from DC nightclubs (making the all-ages show a thing of [...]

DOWNLOAD: (MP3s) Fugazi - Full Disclosure The Evens - No Money MACKAYE: I heard that. But no, as a matter of fact it’s kind of funny; I’m actually kind of tired of hearing about CBGB because there was a big hoopla about their 25th anniversary. They were doing a movie and they had all these bands play there like The Cramps and at some point someone called up Fugazi and asked us if we would play there [...]
