A couple weekends ago a good friend had a sudden medical emergency. It was one of those unexpected events with lots of blood and anxiety while the doctors tried to find and resolve the cause. She's alright now but there were a few very scary days along the way. I've been thinking a lot about it since. I keep realizing that, even though we put it through all kinds of punishment with seemingly no ill effect, the human body can be a fragile system. At the time I was also caught up [...]

As Montreal based noise quartet Suuns ready themselves for a full European tour, you can download their cover of Fugazi's 1991 classic 'Long Division' over at The Stool Pigeon . A glitchy haze of bleeping synths and fuzzy guitar reverb, this track offers an insight into the four-pieces incredible debut album Zeroes QC, which was released earlier this year. Words by Rick Moslen Growing up, many of us believed in punk rock but never considered ourselves "punk." We moshed at shows, bought $3 Epitaph compilations, and complained about Green Day not being a real punk band, but despite a few oddly colored hair manifestations, we never looked the part. Then high school arrived and we discovered Fugazi (cue Handel's Hallelujah Chorus). Not only did they look like regular dudes, but their aesthetic was as essential as the music. My high school punk band suddenly sported Fugazi -esque principles: [...]
Approaching Oblivion has posted a detailed interview with Ian Mackaye of Fugazi , Minor Threat and Dischord Records . He talks about the status of the label: We don't have a lot of current bands. Part of our arrangement from the very beginning was that we were documenting a specific musical scene. I think that it waxes and wanes, it's a living thing, and eventually it will die because it's a living thing. I don't think we're done documenting things, but right now we have a specific back catalog that people are interested [...]

The eminent D.C. punk group known as Fugazi hasn't played a show since announcing an "indefinite hiatus" almost eight years ago. (Hey, punk-gods have families to spend time with, too.) But instead of holding your breath for a reunion show, let out a sigh of relief, as every recorded live performance of the band's decade and a half career is coming your way. In an interview with Approaching Oblivion (via SPIN ), frontman Ian MacKaye revealed that the process of preparing "a database of thousands of live [...]

News has been fairly quiet from the Ian MacKaye/Dischord/Fugazi camp ever since last summer's exciting update from Guy Picciotto in which he revealed the legendary Washington D.C. punk band's plan to release "almost every show [they] ever played" in a digital format via a forthcoming website. Now, 9 months later and 9 years since they're indefinite hiatus began, MacKaye has offered a few updates in a rare interview with Approaching Oblivion . MacKaye revealed that they've completed converting "a database of 1000's of live recordings" on various DAT and cassette tapes to digital files, but [...]

""In On The Kill Taker" was and is my ultimate proof that punk rock can be intense and transformative while also being intelligent, nuanced, and agile"

Alright, alright...I'm a huge fan of the punk (and related) genre. Punk was the first thing I got in touch with as a kid and this encounter has truly influenced my life and tastes regarding music forever. Thus, with that, I bring you a little list of bands from the past and present that fall into the punk genre and punk subgenres. This music isn't for everybody, but if you are into this kinda stuff then this list is for bands that are worth remembering and/or checking out. 1. Bad Brains If [...]

[Here we'll look at some things you probably passed up when you were a kid because you were too busy playing Star Wars with your friend who was actually a jerk… and who threw a tantrum when you schooled him in NHL '96.
